Stream Rippers, ala iNet or RadioLover

With the recent discussion about the windows app MyTunes that allows the decoding of the AAC audio data, the subject of “traditional” stream rippers has been brought up.

Does anyone know if programs like iNet or RadioLover give you the actual mp3 data entering your machine, or do they have to re-encode the incoming audio, mp3->AIFF->mp3? In other words, are stream rippers lossy?

well most streams aren't all that good anyway... but i've tried ripping some streams, and i'd guess that yeah, they're lossy. i guess it might depent what app you use.

I haven't seen any lossless rippers for the Mac. I had a lossless RealAudio/RealVideo ripper for Windows though, it was very useful :)

While not an actual stream ripper, Audio Hijack Pro works very well, since it can rip the audio from a specific app to an AIFF or MP3 file. Lots of options. Works great for ripping audio from DVDs, RealAudio or WMP streams, etc.
