Hard Drives: Do I Need to Leave Some Space or

can I fill it up, down to it's last MB?

My External HDD (320GB Seagate FreeAgent Pro) is down to less than 8GB. What about my iMac's HDD? Do I need a certain amount of free space for my iMac to perform well?
