MBP charger in MBA

Is it safe to use my MacBook Pro 85w charger in my MacBook Air? It fits and does charge the MBA but is it safe, or will it hurt the battery?

I'm sure it's safe. 85W means the charger can go up to 85 watts. It will provide adequate power for your MBA and won't go "over."
