Apple TV and AirTunes

Hi, I was wondering if anybody knows if apple TV can be used with airtunes, in that i mean can external speakers be plugged into apple TV? which would mean the speakers are used by the TV and can also be used wirelessly from iTunes? Basically removing the need for an airport express?

Apple TV can act as external speakers (with remote control) for a computer, but no remote speakers (ala airtunes) can be controlled by it.
