On my MBP specced as in my signature, the update was 198mb. This seems to be the minority based on other 10.5.3 threads, as others have said their downloads were 420mb. So far, there doesn't seem to be any clear pattern in download sizes based on the specs people have given. What could be the factor that makes these downloads so different in their sizes?

Here's the first hypothesis I'll throw out. Feel free to falsify/refute with evidence:

I'm using Time Machine with a Time Capsule. There are a few fixes noted under the TM/TC section of Apple's notes. Could part of 10.5.3 have been included on a previous TM/TC update? If so, it would make sense that it wouldn't update that part twice, right?

If you're going to reply to this thread, tell us as much about your specs as possible (as well as how big your download was, of course), so we can try to figure out why these download sizes are so different.

Feel free to add your own hypotheses as you see patterns in peoples' specs, too.

I'm curious, too. I assumed the larger file was a combo update, but that doesn't appear to be the case. Mine is 198MB. I have a MBP that was fully up to date (10.5.2, all the security updates and everything else).

A buddy of mine and I both have 2.4ghz MBP's mine is the newer Penryn, his in the older SR his update was 198mb mine was 420 we both use Time Machine with Time Capsule's

Mine's also a SR with 198mb. I've seen others with the 198 with older and newer machines than SR, so it's not unique to that style of processor. Also, this shows that there's no real "turning point" in processor series that would necessitate the 198 mb download.

Also, there goes my TM/TC hypothesis.

420MB update here on a Early 2007 MBP.

Doesn't matter really. Only 4 minute download... 😀

Also 420MB update on father's MBA.

All computers where up to date before 5.3

I'm downloading the combo update anyway, keep it on my external drive so I don't have to download it ever again. 536MB - freaking huge.

Dualie in my sig was only 198MB. I was thinking the differences might be language support, but then I thought the difference was too large for that.

Mac OS X: Software update sizes can vary
The sizes of software updates can vary for computers running Mac OS X 10.3.4 or later. This is a feature of Software Update, which automatically detects the best update for your computer.

Sometimes, Software Update preferences is able to offer a "smaller-sized Delta" update than you might expect, or smaller than what you might see on other computers installing the same update. The "smaller Delta" updates are offered when some Mac OS X system files can be modified instead of replaced in their entirety. See "Why are some computers not offered a smaller update?" below for more information.

It's 420MB for my Merom Santa Rosa MacBook, which is has all the 10.5.2 updates. Getting the combo installer now!

Mac Pro 8-core 3.0 GHz (April 2007) -- 198 MB
iMac dual core 2.8 GHz (August 2007) -- 198 MB
iBook G4 1.42 GHz (July 2005) -- 198 MB

None of mine were 420 MB. I would love to know why some machines have the much larger download. Please keep us posted.

VERY strange.

198MB for my Mac pros, The MBP 2.33GHz, the dual-G4, and MacBook 2.4GHz, and one of my Mac minis.

However, ANOTHER Mac mini of an identical configuration, which I *thought* had the exact same software and updates as my first mini, ended up with the 420MB download. 😕

All of the updates were uneventful though.

How about someone who has a machine with a 190MB and 420MB update and open up Console. and compare the /var/log/install.log

Then tell us what's different.
