View Full Version : Some beginner advice for Enemy Territory: Quake Wars

I’m still pretty new to Quake Wars myself, but I have some beginner advice. Don't be afraid of the complexity: do what you know, and the rest will make sense later. Practice against bots, but don’t be afraid to play online and die a lot: you can still help your team, and you'll soon see your stats (http://stats.enemyterritory.com/) (tracked by Ranked servers) start to improve. 4newbies (http://4newbies.planetwolfenstein.gamespy.com/ETQW/) and BattleWiki (http://wiki.battle.no/index.php/Enemy_Territory_Quake_Wars) are good reference sources to answer your questions, or search the official forums (http://community.enemyterritory.com/forums/). GreasedScotsman’s tutorial videos (http://community.enemyterritory.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11603) are also helpful.
Meanwhile, here are two easy, non-complicated roles you can start with right away:
http://a248.e.akamai.net/f/248/5462/2h/images.gamezone.com/screens/26/7/23/s26723_pc_2.jpg
Best choice: play as a GDF Medic, and if you do the following you WILL be helping your team:
1. Look on your screen for a floating yellow diamond (http://wiki.battle.no/images/7/7a/Obj_destroy_trans.jpg) showing the direction to the current objective. If you don't see one, look at the sides of your screen for a little yellow arrow. Go there! If you can't survive in the heart of the fight, spend more time on the edges.
2. Hit 5 for defibrillators (3 gets your gun back).
3. Get up close to anyone--human OR Strogg--who is lying injured on the ground. Aim at them and click.
That's all it takes to help your team a lot. There's much more you can do (press 6 to be able to toss health packs around the battlefield--which you can even pick up yourself) but simply clicking with defibs does many things:
* Defibs on a fallen teammate revives them.
* Defibs (or any weapon) on a fallen enemy makes them impossible to revive (it may take more than one hit to make them stop moving).
* Defibs on a glowing red "spawn host" body destroys it--very useful. (Spawn hosts are a secondary way that Strogg can "revive.")
* But defibs on a body that's not "twitching" is useless--they’re already completely dead. Go for the moving bodies and the spawn hosts.
http://a248.e.akamai.net/f/248/5462/2h/images.gamezone.com/screens/26/7/23/s26723_pc_80.jpg
Second best choice: play as Strogg Infiltrator, with whatever weapon you prefer. (Railgun is powerful and zooms in more, but the trail gives away your location. Lacerator is weaker but fires multiple shots and won't give you away as much.)
1. Hit 5 twice for your Radar tool. Walk forward until you find a spot marked in all green, and click. Now your team can see enemies (red) on radar. (Hit 3 to get your gun back.) If you later find your radar is gone, just deploy it again.
2. Approach the battle (yellow diamond) and find an out-of-the way sniping spot.
3. Hit X to lie Prone (and spacebar to rise if you need to flee). Click the right mouse button to zoom in. Hit 'Use' to increase the zoom even more. Now you can see really well, but the enemy can't as easily see you.
4. Shoot enemies until they catch you! Anyone with a red triangle or no triangle. (White or green triangles are friends.) Aim for the head if possible. It's OK to shoot vehicles too--they're easier to hit!
That's it. Again, when you're ready, there's always more you can do. (Hold down 'Use' on an enemy body to disguise yourself, then sneak up to enemy deployables. Click to exit disguise, then aim at the deployable and hold down 'Use' to disable it. Remember, any time you have to hold down Use, hold it until the ring around your crosshair shows you’re done.)
Hopefully this is a helpful starting place if you’re intimidated as a newbie. Quake Wars is a great game. Have fun!

The best advice with this game is to check out the ETQW Tutorial Video Series by GreasedScotsman (http://community.enemyterritory.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11603). Seriousy, these videos are indispensable and have helped me no end. Check em out! :)

What are those defilbrator thingys that the GDF medics have? the two little squares u hold in both hands, dont those revive too?
nagromme

Human Medic = Strogg Technician
Human Soldier = Strogg Aggressor
Human Engineer = Strogg Constructor
Human Field Ops = Strogg Oppressor
Human Covert Ops = Strogg Infiltrator
But they're not the same--only somewhat similar. Playing as GDF Medic is less complicated than playing as Strogg Technician, because Techs give out ammo AND health (Stroyent supplies both), and they have to make Spawn Hosts. Most importantly, Techs cannot revive instantly--it takes a second or two, which is long enough to fail and die trying!
Each class has one "tool" that you never really have to select, because the Use button will bring it up automatically when needed. Pressing 5 and then left-clicking will select it manually and use it, but there's no need. Just hit Use instead. (If there's a second tool, you need to press 5 twice to get it: Use won't access the second tool. Or you can assign your own key just for the second tool.)
The main tool for Medics is the defibrillators. In my tips above, when I say to press Use on fallen bodies, that's what happens: you'll be using the defibs.
Strogg Techs have a Stroyent injector instead.
EDIT: An important grenade tip I wish I'd found sooner: hold the button down a while before throwing, if you want to "cook it off" so explodes quickly without giving the enemy time to run. (Also, the right button tosses less far. And for Strogg, it also makes grenades stick to things instead of bouncing.)

That is a must, you have to cook grenade in most situations or they'll just run out of range of them and if you practice enough (I need to!) you can take an Icarus out of the sky with one grenade.
Good heads-up with the 'use' key for all classes, when I'm an engineer I can be running with the assault rifle one minute and when I reach a damaged deployable/vehicle/MCP, I just press 'f' [USE] and I can repair without the hassle of trying to find the key or without scrolling to the correct tool. It also works when going in disguise as Covert-Ops or as you say, when as medic and want to switch to the de-fibs quickly. :)

It took me a while to work an Icarus. I saw them a lot online at youtube gameplay videos, but didnt know how to get them to fly, so I tried pressing shift...and woop:p lol, lots of fun, but u have to kinda bounce with them so you dont loose power.

Did you know you can 'ski' with the Icarus? I haven't tried it myself but I've seen other whizzing past doing it.

If you search for Icarus Ski (or Skiing) on Youtube you'll find some videos too if you haven't already. :)

Interesting. Is that intentional or a bug? Seems like an odd behavior.
I try it and I don't see much speed difference if any, but I've heard it can be useful.

I don't think it's intentional just like the bunnyhopping but nobody seems to mind and not many people do it so I guess it's left alone.

Ok, what the hell is a fire team? All I know is that apparently you can communicate easier with whoever is on your fireteam. Is it like some kind of division you can choose to make within the GDF or Strogg to possibly make better plans or something?
nagromme
Jun 3, 2008, 10:17 AM
Yes :)
I haven't really messed with that myself, but there are buttons (text and voice) just for talking with your fireteam. (As well as the usual team and global communication keys.) The fireteam leader is the one who can set the mission of the team, and plant markers to guide the others, or something. Anyway it sounds like it could be useful in a really BIG match, with experienced players. Otherwise, I stay flexible and do what's needed at the moment.
I figured out (no thanks to the non-existent documentation) what the color code is for the triangles over people's heads:
* Red = enemy (some servers turn this off, so you can better hide)
* Green = teammate
* Cyan = teammate on your same fireteam
* White = teammate on the same mission (M key) as you (which is kind of like an automatic fireteam in a way)

Today I was in a server full of bots, i was the only human, i was GDF, and doing the slipgate/nexus mission...damn, I was switch between soldier for exploding AVT's, APT's, and barricade walls, engineer for contruct the guard tours, then to covert op to hack it, back to soldier for blowing up the AVT's in antartica, then to engineer to fix the MCP. damn, lots of work, the furthest i got was deploying the mcp. i couldnt even get into the nexus tower. I hope there are more humans after the 1.5 patch

There are tons of servers for the latest (1.5) patch. Even with my filters set to hide empty servers, zero bots and sub 200 ping, there's usually a good hundred or so servers to choose from most days and hopefully that will go up. I play it through bootcamp by the way and I hope Aspry get a move on with the 1.5 patch for you guys. :(

Yea it kinda sucks over here. Are you like playing a public beta or something? But damn, good game, I don't which is better ET:QW or Quake 4. I love doing airstrikes and targeting fire support (field ops jobs). But I think Covert Ops has to have the best job ever...
And I think an engineer has the busiest job, you always have something to do, ya know?
nagromme
Jun 3, 2008, 09:43 PM
Not beta: 1.5 is final and was released a week and half ago... for PC.
So everyone updated to 1.5 and is playing without us :o Until the Mac version of 1.5 comes out. Then we'll see them and can play against them, just like we could a week and a half ago when they were still on 1.4.
A week and a half isn't so bad, but I sure hope it doesn't get much longer. (Although I know I'll be too busy to play for a while after today.)

You're about right, if the engineer does all the tasks he's supposed to like repair every deployable, he's about the busiest. I love field ops too, have you figured out how to 'direct' airstrikes yet (Strogg and GDF) or how to manually target with the rocket artillery and plasma mortar?
Covert Ops is good because if you're in disguise, you can can get the back-stab in on the enemy completing an objective (planting charge, transmitting data etc...) and winning the round for you team.
I like medic as well because there's nothing like reviving 3 or 4 of your men in an intense shooting match and turning the tide.
Have you tried the aircraft much yet? There's tons more fun had with those things... :)

or how to manually target with the rocket artillery and plasma mortar?
I played Oppressor and was laughing like a fool, using the plasma mortar as a mid-range face-to-face 1-on-1 weapon. The GDF guy was shooting at me in an open courtyard (Area 22 someplace) and we were both hopping and dodging all over... but I wasn't firing my Lacerator, I was keeping the mortar targeting beam on him. And I got him :) And the guy who came after me next :D And a bot :)
Yes, it was n00b on n00b, but it was highly entertaining nonetheless. I'm not sure whether or not they knew what the laser beam meant... until it was too late :o

I love airstrikes, tons of fun to do, it looks really cool :p, I guess its my graphics. Yea, I have manually targetting the field ops deployables and stuff, but havent found much use in them, I mean its really hard to get the deployable in the right position for hilly maps to target right.
Yea, covert ops is the best, I was in disguise to go liberate the strogg forward spawn, and the technician kept giving me stroyent cells...LMAO LMAO LMAO, I had the laughing stock of my life, I went to liberate their forward spawn, he was still there, then I shot him down, what a surprise. But damn, it was funny, he looked like an idiot giving me stroyent cells :D:D:D
I don't like being a medic, I mean the technician can make spawn hosts, thats good, the medic can call in supply crates (useful), but srsly, by the time you walk to the guy whose down, they already respawned, so that kinda makes it boring, IMO.
As for the aircraft, bumblebee is fun, its really easy to fly, easy to land with damaging it. The asansi or w/e is 12234x faster but harder, I'm not a fan of the tormenter much, its really hard to hover and stay in one place to lock a missle on an APT or AVT or something (obviously you have to act fast with the AVT).
One thing I hate about the strogg is when zooming in, its all pixelated at first (I hate that effect), and whenever you get hit in a vehicle, it gets all blurry, kinda gives the GDF a chance to destroy your vehicle or something.
I like 2 servers, that WorldFriends (i forget the rest of the name), and one thats like: [ETPG] Quake Wars, something like that, A lot of the servers are warmup, its really gay how you just punch each other in that time, at least the bots do. On the [ETPG] Quake Wars one it was all human last night, that was a blast, but before that, the strogg was all bot, and human was all human, the GDF killed that day, no questions asked.
A lot of the guys at the servers I'm playing at are eagerly waiting for the patch too.

If I'm flying and I see that laser beam, I'm straight out of there, usually a dive followed by flying in the opposite direction towards base as the base turrets take out plasma mortar and rocket artillery. :D

The joy of manual targeting is that you can hit several targets in one go instead of one target taking all the hits though I think when the initial target is destroyed you can manual target the remaining rounds anyway. If you manual target (just like rockets/obliterators) the enemy doesn't get a warning too!
I don't like being a medic, I mean the technician can make spawn hosts, thats good, the medic can call in supply crates (useful), but srsly, by the time you walk to the guy whose down, they already respawned, so that kinda makes it boring, IMO.
I find that's not the case in the matches I play as there tends to be 3 or more medics for many objectives. Half the team practically needs to be medics on inside objectives to win against good teams.

I like the bumblebee and if you load it with a couple of rocket soldiers you've got yourself one heavily armed vehicle but I absolutely love the Anansi, once you get used to the controls it takes some beating. :)

yea, bumblebee is really easy to hover with, but they are not always in the games. In the Anansi, its a pain in the ass to make it hover, and to target with the LAW main weapon, but damn, the Anansi can go FAST!!!:D:D:D:cool:. My name is bluedoggiant ill add you.

Yeah I think I remember playing with you, that was a game, can't wait for the 1.5 patch.
Awesome game tonight TFMASAD!! That server has the toughest bots EVER. The "[ETPG] Quake Wars!!" also has bots in the server, but they arent that hard, I would say they are set to medium, but that ABC clan one or w/e we were playing on, damn, that had tough bots. I switched to strogg for the quarry one :p, we kicked badly, GDF was mostly human i guess thats why. But when playing in the [ETPG] Quake Wars!! and for example strogg is all bots, and GDF is all human, humans will kill, so thats why I say they are at medium, its still hard though, but tonight's was something...
*awaits the 1.5 patch*

Sounds good to me: they say "QA"--and that means the patch is built at least, even if not debugged and final. If it comes out in a few days after all, then our fears were not realized.
"The Mac version of the update is still rumbling through Aspyr's QA department and should be released within the next few days."
(Also, kudos to Activision for acknowledging the Mac version's existence. For once.)

[MAC] is the tag my clan, "Apple Corps" (aka MacClan.net) uses--and TFMTASAD recently joined. MAC stands for "Mac Apple Corps" I guess. We used it in Descent 3, which was the game we were founded to play: all characters looked like uppercase in D3. (Sometimes you see other people using MAC, which we can't control, and there's another clan that uses lowercase [mac] for some games.)
I haven't (yet) dared stick my clan tag [MAC] in front of my name because I fear I still suck at QW :p But our members are encouraged to do so and I probably should! I certainly will once I feel like I've learned all the classes enough not to humiliate myself. Which means, one-and-a-half classes left to learn! (Not counting GDF--I've never played GDF yet.)
There aren't many of us [MAC] folks in QW yet. We've always been a very informal clan, not getting much into clan wars or anything--though it would be very cool to see that change!

Meanwhile, if I switch back and forth I will TK all over the place, I just know it. My instinct is to attack GDF on sight! Eventually I will be more flexible, and I'll just join whoever is losing/smaller. (For now, if Strogg already has too many, I just find another server.)

You recommended being a GDF Medic... I can't trust a source if it was never one :p :p. lol
You see the BSOD on the covert ops 2 posts up? That had my day...LMAO. I don't have secondary click enabled on my mighty mouse, does CTRL clicking do those things? I have alt fire set to Z... I'm just wondering.

There is not much difference between Strogg/GDF. I've had the for 4-5 days now and I've done a lot of switching. I don't know which side I prefer right now but I do know that as I am a Field Op or an Opressor....I am an happy man.

covert ops or infiltrator, I wanna see if I can put a 3rd eye camera on a flying drone as it passes by me in the energy core level and destroy it:D. I still can't get over the BSOD on the hacking tool...doesn't anyone find that ironic???

Yes, that's pretty funny.
And my choice is Infiltrator! Infs have the BEST toybag in the game :) Covops sounds fun too, but I mean... smoke grenades instead of translocator? No contest.
If you manage to stick a 3rd eye on a flyer, I have an even harder challenge I've been wondering about: stick one (or a mine) on a Vampire :D It would take some very precise (or lucky) bailing out of an aircraft. And it would be TOTALLY useless. But if you can stand on a flying vampire, than you have a brief moment to plant... just to say you did. Probably impossible though.
I also wonder if you could stand on a Magog, and let it carry you off... until you were auto-killed.

Magogs are the big triple-helicopters that deliver heavy equipment. They move slowly and hover low enough to fly above them... surely it's possible to jump on top of one :)
And the big cargo planes are called Jotuns, I believe.

you can't plant explosives on people (I tried), so I'm not sure if it would work if I stick a 3rd eye on a flying drone, if its possible, it would be killer.
Here is something you can do with the 3rd eye cam though: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hGQx0Ows3Hs&NR=1, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRbPUKHOwFg&feature=related

Yeah I kind of whored the Anansi for a while, as I got sick of seeing the decent Tormentor pilots blasting the crap out of the GDF and I just thought it would be cool to deal some death from the air. I probably did the flying thing backwards as I'm sure most decent pilots learn the Tormentor first and then move onto the Anansi but in a one-on-one, the Anansi is best as it can hover and it's rockets fire faster. :D

If I remember rightly, as I've hardly used the basic flight controls, you can only tilt the anansi (and tormentor) so far to the side (or forward/backwards) which means you can't turn as fast or do forward and backward rolls or even numerous other stunts that are necessary for advanced maneuvers for attacking and defending. If you've seen the Dogfights or Wingman tournament matches, you'll find no-one using the basic flight controls. Check out SZAKALOT's (http://youtube.com/watch?v=vlDFjwNb8Wo) flying in this 'Dogfights' promo video (2nd match in). I've played against him one-on-one in Anansis and it was crazy! :)

FYI - my 1.4 "MacClan.net" server has tougher bots again now, but reduced to 8 (max 12 players).
The last few nights around 11 pm Eastern US time, there have been some bigger matches, 4-on-4 or so. No need for bots :)
Some REALLY close matches: last-second defuses on the last objective, etc.

That does it. I'm customizing my flight controls so that forward/back and up/down movement are the same as when driving or walking, instead of all swapped around!
W = boost
S = reverse
Space = up
C = down
Free aim = Shift maybe? Definitely not Home
But ONLY when flying, not when driving or walking.
I want W to mean forward and space to mean up in ALL contexts. Autoexec.cfg to the rescue!
(I'll allow sideways and roll to be how they are, since I'm pretty well used to A & D steering for land vehicles already. UT2004 is the same.)
I'm sure I will want the Advanced controls. I didn't like auto-level mode in Descent either.

The only alteration I made to the controls was to have space as air-brakes (via autoexec config) and also reversed the mouse controls so that the anansi would point up when I moved the mouse forward and it would point to the ground when I pulled the mouse back because I used to crash all the time with the mouse controls as defaulted. :)

I'll probably swap mouse Y too. I was a die-hard "up = down" fan EVEN for ground pounders, years ago. But my friends would always use the opposite, and I'd sit at their machines and go a little crazy. So I learned the "normal" (non-aircraft-style) aiming and now I'm stuck with it.

OMG!!!
I hate quarry so much, but I have to say I enjoyed last night's game on Exclamation.
So I was GDF, I started out the game being a medic, when strogg blew the generator, moving onto the energy cells, I became covert ops. Now surprisingly, GDF (my team) won the map. We were all just fooling around with different things and stuff. So a dark matter canon fired, and our AIT didnt arrive yet.
I've been practicing intercepting DMC's with the anansi, and hammer's with the tormentor. So just as I fly up in the anansi, just a few feet off the ground, the Jet airplane that drops Supply crates, husky's, AIT's, AVT's, APT's, and radars, came just in time to drop off the AIT, but thats not the cool part.
AS IT FLYS OUT OF THE SKY, it INTERCEPTS THE DMC. It was AWESOME!!!!
I mean perfect timing, the jet airplane intercepted the DMC. Damn, it was awesome, there was a big explosion in the sky, then a second later, the plane just "decayed", obviously un damaged. But yeah, it was the best. It must have sucked to be the oppressor behind that target lol.
And later on in the salvage (I actually like salvage, hate the ark and quarry), when the strogg comes in to destroy the salvage, I go in disguise, I've been in disguise like the whole salvage (covert ops), but indoors, dang, I was backstabing people like crazy... AND NEVER GOT NOTICED. it was awesome, like Im just running after people as they spawn, backstabing them one by one, backstabing people just before they fire their obilterator, after the game in the review...apparently I made some people cuss lol.
Yesterday had to be my day of ETQW.

I like Quarry, but I played a ton of Ark and Salvage and they're my least favorite now, along with Area 22. Hmmm... I guess I like to defend! (And I still play as Strogg mostly so far.)
The African campaign is my favorite, followed closely by Pacific (especially Sewer and the flyer stage of Volcano), and the first 2 maps of the American campaign (especially Outskirts).
But then I switch to GDF it will probably be the opposite!
Funny, I keep hearing that Quarry is really tough for GDF, but as Strogg I still see many defeats. Defending the keys instead of just the ship seems to be key (no pun intended).

I bet a LAW can intercept it if you get it just right.
You can survive a direct hit from a Hammer if you make a ball out of 2 tactical shields :) And you can fit several teammates in there too--if they think to join you.
So you can make a portable bomb shelter ahead of time if you're worried about airstrikes :)

That guy is annoying, its really weird, I am ALWAYS on the same server as him, he is an anansi hog, its really annoying, I needed the anansi, and he wouldn't let me use it (covert ops at slipgate). And he always chooses to be medic when he flys, so our only medic is flying, his excuse is that "I'm just high".
But he is a good medic (when he does his job), and a good player overall. But at the end of each match during the review, he has this thing called the SOCK award. The sock award is his way of saying most kills, and believe it or not, he always gets the most kills.

we got a half way disarm, 3-2-1, game over, He charge didnt blow.
JUST as the game announces the winner, the HE charge BLEW!!, and we got the GDF Win! Message, apparently strogg got the Strogg Win! message too!!

Yea, I have played so many games of island and outskirts where we transmit the data on the last second, I've done so once.
But after the timer stops...now that is a record.
It was crazy, and my team was fooling around cuz they thot it wouldn't blow in time, I was like telling them, you never know, just defend it at all costs.

Check the ETQWPro site--I thought about registering there and asking myself, but I haven't.
Last I heard, ETQWPro does not support Mac, because the 1.5 toolset does not support Mac. (I don't think the 1.4 version did either--something in an email from Aspyr suggested that SOME modded QW servers will work on Mac and some won't--I'm nor sure what the difference is. I usually play on Ranked servers, which by definition are not modded.)
Now, I don't know if that means they need the toolset to be running ON a Mac, or if they just need Mac support to be added to the tools that run in Windows.
Either way, if you find out who to write to (Splash Damage?) to plead for Mac support, let me know!
Although I think I'd probably prefer the regular "bells and whistles" QW to the ETQWPro mod myself.

Hi, All.
Yep, still recruiting--all skill levels welcome :) (We're more about fun than hard-core competitive gaming.) Welcome aboard! I sent you a clan invitation in-game. Look for it below the server browser.
I'm back in the game this week, thanks to FINALLY finding a new mouse I can stand. A 12-button VX Revolution. (NOT MX Revolution.) It's great.
And as of today, I'm no longer playing 99% Strogg. It has been 80 hours of alien fun, and I'm still not close to getting bored, but I want to get used to the human side too so that I can hop into any team that needs me.
So I may be a little n00bish for a while as I get my bearings after 2 months of all-Strogg habits!

I run a dedi occasionally, but not often since the latest patch. I tend to play on whatever gives me a good ping! Usually ranked, usually in the evening (US).
(I'm the same name in QW.)
