Safe boot from raid1 system disk? Still recommended for updating OS?

Is it possible?
If it is how?
My MP just reboots or hangs.
Is safe boot still better way to update OS in .5?
GUI is disabled anyway in "normal" update procedure and maybe same services than with Safe Boot?
