View Full Version : Apple's Back to School Promo Kicks off June 3rd

Apple is planning on launching their annual Back to School promotion on Tuesday, June 3rd. Last year, Apple offered a free iPod Nano ($199 value) (http://www.macrumors.com/2007/06/05/back-to-school-promo-and-macbook-pro-specs/) or a $199 credit against a more expensive iPod for eligible customers. The iPhone was specifically excluded from this promotion last year. The promo was available only to college students purchasing a qualifying (MacBook, MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac Pro).

The exact offering for this year's promo is not yet known, but is expected to be comparable. Qualifying students looking to buy a Mac should certainly wait until June 3rd to take advantage of the promotion.

Last year's promo page (http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=MjgzNzI&nclm=BackToSchool2007) remains online at the Apple Store, but terms and conditions will likely be different for this year's promo.

Would be awesome if they included iPhones this year (not that I'm going back to school......ever, but still awesome for students).

And it will double sales because after Tuesday people are going to buy then, and the people wanting to take advantage of the deal will by then too. So what if sales are slow for 4 days.

Agreed with the above poster. By and large, most universities are out well before June 3rd. My last day of class was April 27th, and graduation was May 8th.

I suppose it also gets the incoming college freshmen thinking reaaaaaaaaaaaally early about getting a new computer. :)

Yeah but from a Resellers standpoint it would help to know as soon as possible so you can tell customers to wait. How many times have you heard over the years "I just bought this on Friday and now Tuesday there is this deal?" " If only I had waited..."

Oh and for College, it never ends, Summer sessions in full swing and 1st year testing is going on and parents visiting campus, oh what fun.

why does "back to school" happen before they break up for the summer?

Why? Because a significant chunk of the citizens in the USA just got handed a check from the IRS for the "stimulus package."

Other stores are having sales so they can advertise a way to spend the check. This is probably Apple being smart enough to know there is extra money out there right now.

Thats me!!!! LOL... i plan on getting a macbook end of June/July. So this is perfect... Maybe il put the 200 credit to the ipod touch if i have extra cash on gift cards. Cousins are getting me apple gift cards for graduation gift. but i also have to wait for these rumors about new design to see if there true. but im hopeing end of june/july to have it....its my first mac!!!! I want to have it b4 i go so i can get used to it.

or maybe il keep the nano.. i thought it was something different. i would keep the nano

why does "back to school" happen before they break up for the summer?

Because the largest segment of back to school purchasers of computers are people just graduating high school and who are getting a new computer for college. Early June is when all of those high school graduates have their graduation parties, and thus is when they get all their graduation gifts.

I find this really really humorous and I am really laughing right now.

I JUST bought my new iMac over the weekend, and I used my student discount for the final time, as I am graduating from school. However, I had them customize it to come with a bigger HDD. I completely forgot about this promotion.

The worst part: Since it was customized, I had to order it online while at the store...and it won't be here until June 3rd.

I have to wait almost another week and I won't be getting a free iPod. Oh well, hopefully I will have a job and I can buy an iPod touch.

It may look bad if they do this now, and sell a load of computers, and then bring out a brand new one a month later. That said, it may help to shift a load of extra stock before they bring out a revision.

Well in the past they have always started back to school with some sort of Macbook update. This is their main product that college students buy. I would hope they would release a new one at the release too.

According to AppleInsider's write-up (http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/05/29/sources_apple_planning_biggest_back_to_school_promo_yet.html), refurbs have been excluded in the past, along with the mac mini.

because we're headed for [already in] a recession so anything they can do to up sales in general . . .

Nitpicking here...

An extended decline in general business activity, involving two consecutive quarters of falling real gross national product.

Our economy grew .6% last quarter, therefore disqualifying us for a recession.

On topic, do sales really increase that much with these promotions? Im pretty sure most people who have a Mac already have an iPod.

YAY!!!!!!!! :D :D :D

I've been waiting since April for this so I can buy a new iMac. I already have an iPhone, maybe they'll let the 3G iPhone qualify for discount (although I doubt it), or I'll sell whatever iPod I get to help pay for the iMac.

I do have a question. Back in 2005 when I bought my PowerBook, I used my edu discount through the online store. Can you use an edu discount at retail stores? Thanks!

rockthecasbah
May 29, 2008, 08:21 PM
I hope updated MBP's and/or MB's are announced but what will likely happen is that Apple will use this sale to clear out their back stock of current models (and Nanos) in preparation for an after September release... sigh. I have no need for a Nano so I'd likely sell it to just help pay for the computer itself, but since I'd have to pay for tax, it seems like despite the free iPod, buying from a seller like Amazon where discounts make it the cost of edu + tax exclusion will be better suited for me...

We'll see what happens in the next few weeks in regards to rumors i guess :o

You mean October 3rd? One of the things Apple does with the back to school promo is clear out the previous models. They update them after the promo ends.

I've been under the impression that they have updated the Macbooks before or around the start of the Back to school, not to clear out previous sales. Look at the buyers guide.

Macbook 2006 (http://www.macrumors.com/2006/05/16/apple-macbook-intel-ibook-released/) - Back to school program started June 5, 2006 (http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/06/06/05/apples_back_to_school_program_offers_free_ipod.html)

Macbook 2007 (http://www.macrumors.com/2007/05/15/apple-releases-new-macbooks/)- Back to school program started around June 5, 2007 (http://www.macrumors.com/2007/05/31/new-macbook-pros-on-tuesday/)

So my question is do you think Apple will break with that tradition?

No way Apple is updating MacBooks next week. After this promotion which usually ends mid September then yes soon after that. I think they are going to ride this model out a few more months. With no competitors updating systems (Dell, HP, Lenovo) to Montevina until fall, there is no reason to. I am speaking based on the education market. Apple with this upcoming promotion is top dog.

Your notebook will be updated regularly through the OS updates. Your warranty will continue, so nothing should change at all.

I'm using the first generation Mac Mini, and I just had something fixed with 10.5.3 today.

A current Macbook will work very well for a long time.

If this deal does pop up in a few days I hope they will let me return/rebuy it w/ an iPod. Do you guys think there is a good chance?

Since i don't really need the new iPod (just bought a touch :)), do you think I could like "return it" to the store and just get store credit and put that $200 towards mac office or airport express or something that I really would use? OR would that not be possible do you think? Do you have to send in a rebate with the barcode or something like that to get the money back? thus meaning i'd have to open the iPod up. This is all assuming that the offer is identical to the previous years.

Jmanstk

hmm probably not. Only because you pay for it, and then get a rebate on it. so if you try to return it, you will just not get a rebate. Even if you wait till after you get the rebate, they are not going to let you return it as that would be like giving you the money twice.

You have to cut out and send in the UPC from the iPod box and the computer's box as well so no, you can't return it. Best you can do is put it on eBay or Craigslist.

Finals week for me was May 12-16, and graduation day was the 17th.

Here in Singapore, there were several promotions going on last year.

One of the promotions was getting a free Nano upon purchasing a Macbook while the other was a free XBOX 360 if you were to purchase an MBP.

The current promotion: If one were to suscribe to broadband internet in Singapore, one would get:

1) Free Ipod touch or
2) Free Macbook or
3) A promotion for the Air (Special price at USD700)

So yup...promotions exists internationally.Depending on your country, they may have other kinds of attractive promotions

You can get your education discount in the store. Just show your school ID or a copy of your class schedule. I had an old ID because I haven't taken taken a physical class since 2006, all my other ones have been online, and they still allowed me to use it. That may not be true of every associate, though, but it's worth a shot if you don't have a current ID but are still in school.

I'm not sure what the promo would be if it wasn't for iPods.

And I got my MBP in June after they had a big update, and the promo was going on at that time. I didn't get the free iPod since I got my MBP for free (I was having problems with my PB so they just exchanged it for me) but I do remember them having it when I went in to the store. So there's a good chance the new one will come out in June.

I was going to buy a MacBook a few weeks ago, but the kind gentlemen at the IlliniAppleCenter (http://www.illiniapplecenter.com) informed me that it'd be wise to wait until the back to school promo.

However, they didn't know when it would be, so what is June 3rd based on? The article doesn't cite any sources, even if the source is just "reliable sources." Is it just a guess based on past promos and the fact that Apple likes to announce things on Tuesday?

Good timing as I have to buy a macbook for my wife. :) Maybe if the promo is good I'll jump and get her the AIR :apple: She never uses discs and mostly is just pure web surfing and some photo resizing to post on the web. That would be a good way to justify my idea to buy the 30" ACD :D

its back to school promo... still there is written for college students...:confused:

Apple's educational policy has been changed in the last few years to just include college/university students, college/university faculty/administration members, and k-12 teachers/staff. No high school students :o

Like I said in an earlier post, they're pretty lax about the date on the IDs. At least the people I've dealt with. You may get the random irate Apple worker who is unyielding, but you can take your chances. Or order it online. I don't know if they actually verify that way.

The thing is that Apple will never announce a new product in advance, so the only way to know when a new/updated product is coming out is to follow rumors, and that usually only gives you a general idea of the release date. The day they put the new item on sale is when it will be sold, never weeks/months before like a lot of other companies.

Just a thought sorry i didnt have this with the other thread but do teachers get this rebate also?
If you go on the Apple Store online there is a link to the education store. If you teach in University, it will ask you which one. If you teach K-12 then you just need to click that and (i think) specify your school. The teacher promo is available all year.

btw for everyone else, doesnt apple have a year-round discount for college students? i think its a price discount not a free iPod.

Could Apple feasably put in a new processor based on the new Montevina chip and release it next week with or without an appearance change? Intel did this for the iMacs (not saying they would use the same processor because I know they don't) would they be able to do this with the Macbooks for the back to school thing? The only reason why I ask is because people say that there isn't going to be an update on the Macbook on the back to school launch but could it happen?

They don't actually check it you know...

They audit random orders (very small percentage). If you can't provide proof that you're enrolled, you have to pay the difference. But it's on the honor system for the most part.

With the student developer program you do have to provide proof of being enrolled (I assume because the hardware developer discount is very steep compared to the $99/year cost of being a student developer), whereas the general education discount takes the sting out of sales tax, but isn't "steep."

Conceivably, they could. I believe in the past Apple has gotten chips about a month prior to their "release" as well. It's possible, but I believe it's unlikely.

The Montevina chip will be included in the new Macbooks - not a quasi-Montevina chip. Montevina offers better battery life and an upgraded integrated graphics card - neither of which apply to the iMacs but are central to the Macbooks.

It appears that you go to the same "Apple Store for Education" as the students as an educator. I'm not sure if the text includes all those that have access to the Apple Store for Education or strictly for college students.

I do know that you should receive an official answer on Tuesday.

Lower power consumption definitely applies to every electronic in one's house if you want to be picky about it.

However, seeing as battery life is an important component of the Macbook (as opposed to the iMac), I drew what I call a notable distinction between the two.

Talks of a MBP upgrade in September/October worries me.

I am transferring to Western Michigan for the fall, and my first date of school is September 2. I will be getting an MBP for school, but I would like to have it for the first day of school. While I don't really care for an ipod or not (I have a iPhone), I don't know if I could hold off for a couple weeks after school started in getting the MBP.

I know what everyone says, if you need it, get. But I just don't see where the value is in releasing a product (ok, updating) in September-October).

I mean, if you release Mid-June - August, any one who is going back to school has an incentive to buy then.

If you release it Late November/Decemeber, then you have it in time for Christmas.

But what is the purpose in Late September/October?

Thoughts?

It is my understanding that Montevina is an architecture (ala Santa Rosa) or chipset, NOT a chip. The Montevina architecture will still use the current Penryn chips.

I know that this promotion is also used in Canada 'cause signs are posted all over campus when it happens. That's why I knew to wait this year. Here is the info page on apple.ca but it hasn't been updated yet, still says 2007! http://www.apple.com/ca/education/promos/indiv.html

I'm excited to get my first mac and my first ipod all at the same time! Do you generally get most of your money back if you resell after an update or are you looking at half price or something?

Of course it all depends on what someone is willing to pay, but I think you'd be able to get at least $150-160 for an 8 gig ipod nano. All you need to do is look on ebay to see what the going rates are for yourself.

Actually, I just read the terms and conditions on the ipod nano rebate form from last year's promo and it looks like teachers are included: "Purchase an Mac and an iPod Nano with the Education Discount and receive a $169 rebate." Then you can describe your status as Teacher, Faculty or Staff.

Nice.

Be careful on keeping it in good condition as I have found that when people sell iPod's or iPhone's on EBay those that are sold in good condition (cuts on edges, etc...not found and the pictures show it), you can get more money for it

If the iPod/iPhone does have cuts on it, tell the person buying it but take pictures a little further away so it isn't glaring

Don't lie but don't magnify it :)

I have a few questions:

1. Do you actually have to cut up the box of both the Macbook and the iPod to get the UPC codes? I don't want to ruin a brand new box... I... err... like boxes for some reason. I have loads of them from just about everything I've purchased in the last 5 years. Yeah, don't ask.

2. I read somewhere that you need to submit your sales receipt as well. Are photocopies accepted? I don't want to send away my proof of purchase (unless they send it back) in the event that I need it again.

you HAVE to send the original UPC in, cut out of the box.

I would have to assume that since apple stores offer an "email" reciept, that you can get that, and an instore receipt.

I always do the email reciept, cause it files away in my "apple purchases" folder for archival.

Apple probably wants to refresh their entire portables line and ipods right before christmas after the back-to-school promotion is over. There are rumors out there that the macbook updates will not be completed until september anyways. so if that is the case what else is apple releasing at the wwdc besides the 3g iphone? tablet? any ideas?

Seeing as Montevina isn't a chip, probably not. Intel had no part in Apple design. The chipset isn't out yet, anyway; it was delayed to July 14. Apple has a record of exclusivity, though, and it would be kick-awesome if the "delay" was so that Apple could have them first. I can easily see there not being the unnecessarily vaunted MacBook Pro redesign that everyone wants, but even though I don't care about having a total redesign, a magnetic latch would be nice.

Last year, after the release of the new iPods, the Back-to-School promo kept going with the modifier that it does not apply to the newest models. They could easily do something similar this year and say that the Back-to-School promo does not apply to the Montevina MacBooks and MacBook Pros that will come out July 14 so as to clear out the old stock. There will be no MacTablet at WWDC, simply because I started wanting one a few weeks ago.

Yep, and you can go ahead and blame it on the human race's capacity for dishonesty, if you'd like.

For instance, I imagine it discourages reselling the "brand new" products after receiving the rebate when there's a curious hole cut out of the side of it, rather than just a label peeled off.
