I just got a new Black Macbook today. I noticed that when I do some things, such as play The Sims 2, the fans on my Mac speed up to about 6000 RPM. This happens within minutes of me starting the game. I looked at the temperatures and they had barely gone up. Is it normal for the fans to act this way? If not, what could be causing this?

I'm pretty sure it's normal. Happens with just about every MacBook I've used. The fans kicking in so soon is a precautionary measure more than anything whenever the processor is taxed. If I were you I'd be more concerned if your fan didn't kick in.

Ok, thanks. I was just concerned because they go up so high, so fast.

Yeah, I've seen mine go as high as 6200+ RPM. My fan is around 1500 RPM under a typical light load.

Yeah, like said, I'd be worried if you were playing any game that even remotely uses the GPU and the fan didn't kick on.

Download SMC fan control if you want more of a say on when it actually pumps up the RPM.

I generally keep mine at least at 1800 RPM when I'm doing basic stuff.

6000+ when playing WoW and while watching videos / flash videos / etc.

I have the same question/problem but I don't know where I can find the speed of the fan in my Macbook. Thanks

I use Fan Control (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/23137)
I increased my fan speed, and now my mbp doesn't burn my legs!
I just started using iStat menus, thanks to this thread, and it's already become one of my favorite apps.
