The Apple online store is probably your best bet for refurbished items.

From my experience, Apple stores have not SOLD refurbs but they may have a stock of them to be used for exchanges/replacements for defective products. If you want to buy, online is where you'll get it easiest.

A couple stores I knew of used to sell them in small quantities, but about a year ago, they stopped. They only usually sold them during their "fire sales", so it was hit or miss if you could get some.

If you have a current iPod you want to trade in because it's damaged/broken and you're out of warranty, they will sell you a refurbished iPod.

The ones I have been to ... yes. You have to ask at the counter. They might call them "refreshed." I've always seen them in a drawer, hidden.
