hi all

so every time i use skype, my cpu immediately jumps to around 50% use, and the fan kicks on (which i know is good). so throughout the skype call, the fan is really annoying.

i was wondering if skype does this for anyone else or if its a problem i have

Mid-2007 MacBook here.

Fan only kicks in with Skype during a video call. Considering the quality of the video I certainly don't mind! I was video chatting with a and she showed me a screenshot. The video she saw of me was nearly as good as the preview window in Photo Booth. The video I saw of her was practically the same.

During voice calls, though, theres no fan noise. Its as if the MacBook is idle.

When you're video chatting, all of the video processing load is placed on the CPU, since that's the way the OS X handles video.

So, it's no surprise if you see 5000+ RPM on your fan while video chatting.

Hi,

I had this problem with my macbook. I solved it by reducing the resolution of the video stream I'm sending, and reducing the frame rate. I've posted instructions on how to do this at:
