YoYoMac, your photo is really good. I think the composition and the colors are superb. It also achieves one thing that is important in photography, which is to impress and make the viewer think of what is happening in the photo.

What was your objective with this photo? What did you wanted to transmit the viewer?

A powerful shot (though maybe not one for the family album...). What I got from the pic is what some women say about becoming a mother: it's like losing some of their own personality, because of the never-ending demands of looking after small children. In the pic the mother's face is completely hidden and the cross-faced baby demands attention... from her and from us... Interesting shot (though I wouldn't want it hanging on my wall)...

Don't know if anyone here read about the awful crash on Friday night - we were about a minute behind it and were stuck for a very surreal 2 hours.

I got my camera out and climbed onto the central reservation, and some bloke let me climb on top of his transit van to take this.

Yesterday was the coming together of photographers throughout Los Angeles; to peacefully protest against the unnecessary treatment they have received from various law enforcement personnel while photographing in public places.

The organizer of the event (seen in the photo below that I took during an interview) made a flickr group (http://www.flickr.com/groups/laprotest/) to explain what motivated this rally. You can see additional photos I took from the event on my flickr set (http://www.flickr.com/photos/genshi/sets/72157605385511061/).

Part 2 of the mini chuckwagon poster.

When I first uploaded the original I said I would upload it again once the background horses and wagon had been added. While here it is, this is probably going to be the final image that is used on the poster. The concept I had was to take the viewer right into the race to see the action close up. I have cropped the top of of this one but the one that will be used has a lot more sky that will be used for text.

I thought that I would jump into this now since I have my new camera and getting back into shooting. Years ago I got fairly good with a 35mm SLR film type. I have a lot to learn about digital, and I am open to criticism! This forum, along with a few other things, drove me back into amateur photography.

This is one of my first shots on a test run with the new gear, shot in RAW and tweaked with Aperture. The river is at flood stage and I took lots of shots of it. This is a run-off what turns into a small creek before emptying into the river.

The volcano in the foreground is the active Momotombo. This volcano is located between Managua and Leon in Lake Managua, Nicaragua. However, this shot was taken in the outskirts of Chinandega, about 80 miles north of the capital.

You can't really see it, but to the right of Momotombo is Momotombito, a smaller active volcano. The truly depressing part? Lake Managua is completely polluted due to past administrations deciding it was a good idea to divert all the sewage and trash from the capital into the lake. However, I did hear that there are plans being laid out, with aid from I believe it was the German government, to clean up this second largest lake in Nicaragua.

Thanks to everyone for the nice comments about the yoga sunrise photo I posted. A lot of planning and effort went into getting that photo. I was able to get several great images from that session.

But I do have I photo that is a bit interesting, I personally think its a B photo at best. Simply because my friend is just fixing her hair. She told me its one of her favorites from the shoot, because it is interesting.

Let me know what you think of this photo, Please, I need another opinion.

Worriedmac, was that photo of the car on the bridge taken in Killin by any chance?

Lovely shot btw.

Took me a while to reply but yes it was in Killin. I'm guessing they pay these guys to drive vintage cars through the centre. We were there for my friends stag. We stayed in Killin first as we wanted to visit the cave nearby that was featured in Monty Pythons the search for the Holy Grail. In fact I'll post that, like the geek I am.

I like to include people in a lot of my landscape photographs, especially when I'm shooting for stock pic sales (I can offer versions with people and without). But too many people assume they're in the way, and stop walking. And don't get me started about people who walk in the country while carrying white plastic carrier bags: very unphotogenic... ;)

I have to disagree to some degree.
Cityscape photography with people gives a better sense of scale. It shows how truly epic the structures are.
I have a photo (would need to find it) that actually won me a small award. It was a frontal shot of the SF City Hall, I stood way back on the center of the lawn, nearly on the sidewalk just to get the shot with an old minolta. I had something like a 50mm lens on it IIRC. However, as I took my shot I started to really look and saw a homeless man sleeping on the lawn. I just barely caught him in the frame and submitted it to a competition with an essay about the decline of America. I'm not trying to say people in cityscapes will will you awards, only that the homeless man on the lawn showed a true sense of how large City Hall truly is up there.

There are times when the people can be a distraction, but every so often they really add to the overall photo.

I agree.

I was speaking more in terms of the specific shot I was going for: a wide, uninterupted shot of the tower and Champs de Mars. If I'm looking to shoot a buiilding, or interesting architecture, then I'd prefer no people.

But of course, people are an integral component of a city, so if I'm going for a "city life" type of shot, then people are welcome.

Today I just spent $80 on a set of Marum Diopters... They said that they were made in Japan, so how could I resist?

This is straight out of the camera (just with a bit of cropping) on a D300 with the 16-85mm VR. +4 and +2 diopters were stacked on the end of the lens.

The only thing that bugs me about these is the amount of CHROMATIC ABBERATION. AAARGGH. (See the macro thread post to see what I mean)

As I mentioned in a previous post, I'm saving up for a DSLR. I have $400 saved up now and I am getting impatient about getting one (Canon 350D). However, would it be better to forego that lens and get the f 1.8 50mm lens instead?

Great pic. Fett!

Did you use a fill flash of some kind?

Also how did you blur out the horizon? Tilt-shift lens, photoshop effect, or do you just have a lens with a .94 aperture??

No flash...just the setting sun. I used photoshop to give a fake tilt-shift effect. I was bored at work tonight and experimenting with some different retouching tricks.

You've thought about the composition but, with such a wide-angled view, once the eye has followed the lines of perspective into the distance, there isn't enough 'reward' at the end: the white house is too small to hold the attention.

I don't know what it was that that inspired you to take this pic. I can't detect any enthusiasm... apart from maybe giving your wide-angle a workout. And the dull, flat light doesn't help... Just my two-pennorth... ;)

I think it's a good portrait but there are some things you may want to consider:
- there is too much space on the right side and too little above her. blank spaces are allright but i don't see that much interest on the wall.
- the grainy effect doesn't really work, I'd like it more clean.
- try using rulers in PS (cmd+R) and you'll see the wall lines aren't completely straight. this is quite important if you have so many lines in the picture. I think you should rotate it a little bit clockwise and maybe apply the lens distortion filter.
- more contrast between the wall and the girl's skin could help.
- don't take this too seriously, I am quite new to the photography world ;)

I just dropped this off in Nolan's Myspace comments... wish I had messed with that color cast a bit first. Does anyone have a trick for evening out the whites in an image like this other than the generic white balance adjustment that I've tended to use? I'd love to get those whites white without messing up the blue greens in the water. It was under a cloud so the whites didn't pop like I wish... c+c always welcome!:)

It's a pretty good picture, but the problem with shooting a scene with such straight, square lines is that the barrel distortion of your lens becomes painfully obvious. That's pretty much one of the first and only thing I noticed. The barrel distortion would probably improve if you stood farther away from the scene and increase focal length...

Better, yes: fewer extraneous details. But there's no feeling that a race is about to begin (the 'coiled spring' before the explosive start); he could be kneeling down to have a rest. Half a second later he would be up on his blocks: ready. Imagine taking a shot at that moment, with you lying on the track-side. You'd be able to see the expression on his face, and maybe get a more dynamic shot....

Amazing image! This may be a really dumb/rude question but, is it real?!
Much pp? If so is there any chance we could see the original? Once again great shot.

thanks :)
it isn't a dumb question. actually some people got confused. of course it is real, but the cicylists are made of plastic. they are miniatures on the frame of a window (the black frame).
the glass was kind of dirty and the sky wasn't that saturated so I post processed that. otherwise, there is not much editing.

Ok... I do not think that I really belong here...

I am a very amateur photographer... and I am really jealous of lots of your pics...

Here are some of my most recent (and in my opinion best) pics... comments?
