View Full Version : No 3G iPhone at WWDC

chuckles:)
Jun 1, 2008, 09:05 PM
Alright, so it seems like everyone on the internet is quite sure that there will be a 3G iPhone at WWDC. But what if there isn't? I know its unlikely, but it could happen, right?

So lets try a thought experiment. Everyone pretend you just saw the keynote without a mention of the iPhone. You are crushed. devastated. your world has just come tumbling to the ground. How could steve do this to you?

Please respond to this thread as if it were the real deal.

There is no 3G iPhone, just more info on the software update.

WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT IT?

I'll go about my normal life as I really don't care. People will be mad even if 3G gets announced because there are much higher expectations piled on top of it.

Especially since there are no processors to which they can upgrade.

i have thought about this too

it would be just like last year when everyone had expectations of some announcement at WWDC regarding the iPhone, and all we got was web apps and everyone was pissed.

but i guess its true, you can't please 100% of the people 100% of the time

Are you living under a rock?
I've seen stories about it on every major tech website, CNN, Fox News, tons of major newspapers worldwide, Mossberg has referenced it... it's everywhere. All the insiders expect it. Apple's done nothing to try and quell any rumors (which they would do if they didn't want their stock prices to adversely be affected).

Stock prices would drop quickly and drastically if WWDC passes with no new iPhone.

Seriously, Steve Jobs would have an accident in his pants if for some reason someone at apple messed up the 3g iphone launch. If he was forced for whatever disasterous reason to make a last minute delay of the iphone 2.0 launch I'm sure he would be vomiting and quaking in his boots right now as how to break the news to the world!

If there's no 3G iPhone at WWDC next week, I say we all gather our pitchforks and torches and meet Steve-O at his house!

Jun 1, 2008, 09:52 PM
of course, 3G will be nice but what is going to change everything next week is going to be 3rd party apps. I'm as excited as everyone else is about the possibility of video conferencing, faster access, deleting multiple emails and some of the fun little nuggets that Apple will provide but it is those 3rd party apps (not to mention enterprise) that will keep our heads spinning for months and years to come.

I'd prolly just react like "Oh, well that kinda sucks I suppose." I'm perfectly happy with my current iPhone; it does everything I need and more.

Besides, if there's no 3G iPhone, I'll give the market a day or two to let AAPL asplode and then pick some up über cheap and watch it build again on the next rumour :D

Exactly. Its all about the 2.0 software upgrade and the apps. 3G etc. is just gravy. iPhone OS is absolutely amazing...

AAPL seems to have drastic changes related to insider news all the time - things the general public doesn't know anything about. I think you are under estimating the effect this would have.

I think it would drop like a rock - just like it did in January...

I'm not saying I would agree with that, but that the media and industry has built up huge expectations for the new iPhone, and if Apple doesn't deliver what they EXPECT them to deliver, I'm sure it would tank...

Keeping up with these expectations is what concerns me most about AAPL...

I swear, if they don't announce the 3G iPhone at WWDC then I will go on a rant on this board seriously lol. I would be sooooo angry.

But I mean, all the clues lead up to a WWDC announcement, so there better be one or else. If Steve wants to sell 10 million then he will need to announce it at WWDC.

I just wonder what we are gonna see....

If the new iPhone VS2 does not have 3G, Blackberry will increase in market share a lot because the new BB 9000 Bold is 3G. Also AT&T stated that all new phones will be 3G this year.

I think they will come out with 3g iphone, new .mac and new macbook air kinda stuff...

This just in: WWDC keynote has been cancelled. No Steve Jobs this time. ;)

I'm pretty sure that there is NO way there's no 3G iPhone. If it's not immediately available, they have to at least announce it. At the very least, launch the store and release 2.0 firmware - it relates directly to developers.

Be very upset...

... that I can't buy shares when they take a sudden (but only temporary) nose-dive.

Aside from that - not a lot really. I've already got an iPhone and was not planning on replacing it. The rumored new hardware brings nothing compelling to the table. The software updates are far more important - and I get those for free.

I agree. There is no way there will not at least be a launch of it. There are too many rumors about it coming in June to various countries around the world, let alone the USA, and all the other corroborating rumors. It's coming, just a matter of when it will ship.

I really hope they do what they did for Leopard, take pre-orders, and guarantee same day delivery.

I would probably whimper a bit, or let out a sigh as my current cellphone is on it's last leg and I need a new one.

I am hoping that the 3G iPhone is released so we can see it here in Japan.

Interesting thread idea. A imilar thought occurred to me the other day - we're all taking this 3G release on 9th june as a given but it could not happen then.

I'd be disappointed (my current contract is up, my phone is half dead and I'm ready to buy an iPhone) but it's clearly a matter of time. v1 stocks are dwindling, 2.0 software coming out etc etc - it can't be too far away

And lets hope we don't get any angry mobs rallying towards Cupertino.

Remember when we were going to have a wave of serial muggings in front of Apple stores last June as people walked out with $600 phones in their hands? Seriously, search the forums - some were predicting that quite seriously.

Based on their two post, they are either really committed to the fake post cause, or they didn't read. Plus they spoke in the future rather than present tense, so it seems unlikely that they actually knew what was going on.

But if it was real, then that was awesome!

While I would be disappointed after all the hype, (I'm actually impressed that they are even TALKING about the new phone only a year after the first), I wouldn't be in as bad a shape as the ones that just sold their 1st gen iPhones. They will be raising #&!!.

I'll be keeping my 1st gen as a backup, and it'll be better than lugging around my old Razr, which is as out of date, as the Ol' Moto bagphone (at least to me). Im not even remotely tired of my current iPhone yet. So even a backup iPhone in case something happens to a new one, will be nice to have.

I hope they have set the standard for major updates to the iPhone every year from now on!

At least with this, there will be no hacking necessary for VoIP over the 3G and EDGE networks.

The menubar thing is cool, but as mentioned, its not as beautiful as the iPhone. I also believe that better apps will come out for the iPhone, because of the single hardware design. All developers know what the handset has, and don't have to make an app that will work on some phones and not others running the OS.

Marc4
Jun 2, 2008, 07:56 PM
Well, other than being a little disappointed due to the expectations created by the hype and rumors, I would actually be genuinely worried for Apple and their dwindling smartphone market share.

Think about this: they seem to have consciously made an effort to deplete the current iPhone's stock, by making it unavailable on the online Apple store and failing to replenish their retail stores.

If someone wants to buy an iPhone today (and I know of at least 3 people who do), one must buy it from AT&T and sign up for a 2-year contract, or find it unlocked elsewhere online (e.g. eBay) at a premium.

So really, Apple would do a great disservice to itself if Jobsie didn't at least announce the next-gen iPhone next week, even if it doesn't ship for another few weeks.

-Marc
