What is 'System Events'. CPU hog!

Should I be alarmed? MBP running a bit sluggish and in Activity monitor I notice that every 5 seconds or so 'System Events' is running between 5% to 60% of the CPU. What can I do to fix this?

just force quit it.

I've force-quitted this process a couple times with no obvious impact to normal operations. If you don't regularly view the event log, then you won't really care.
It seems that is process goes into a death spiral when rebooting after a kernel crash (gray screen of death).


Once killed, everything was good again.

And no, that % CPU usage is not normal.
