Does anyone know if the logo light on the top of the iBook G3 (white 12") can be replaced with different colors. If so where would I get the light and directions? I have already painted my book, and now want to finish the mod with a new light. I littel note. Painting hte plastic the iBook is made out of is no easy task. but auto paint will stick to anything.:p

thanks in advance

that 'light' is the glow from the LCD screen and hence cannot be changed. You could probably take it apart and paint the Apple logo if you really want to, but I don't think that I would.

Good luck.

Edit: I just remembered that you might be able to use a small piece of colored cell material (like they use in theaters) to achive this, but again you will have to open the bezel to do this.

I was under the impression that there was a small LED beneath the apple logo. perhaps not?

Nope, it's just passive light from the LCD.

You'd need a transparent coloured plastic Apple logo to do this (I hope I didn't contradict myself there). Good luck tracking one down

i've seen it done. colored cellophane behind the logo is all you need, search google, you'll find something... i know i saw a green one once.

What is this talk about not being able to do it since it comes from the light of the LCD?

Use a lighting gel!

I have done it, and it looked... ugly. But if yours is already painted it might look good.

there's a japanese site with all sorts of pre-cut apple logo gels, expressly for this purpose. I don't read japanese, and I'm not sure if google does... but I'll give it 30 seconds and see what comes up....

ok I didn't find anything.. sorry

hi jmadams,

I gave up the search for the japanese site... it's one of those things I just sort of let pass.. but anyhow to answer your question about take-apart guides here's what I came up with:

http://uk.geocities.com/ibookupgrade/
http://digilander.libero.it/reiji/ibook_mod.html
http://www.yourmaui.com/ibook.html

also, it's not quite the same thing but maybe you'll like this stuff: http://www.macskinz.com

I took all your suggestions and came up with this. i printed a colored square on transparencey and stuck it behind the clear cell on the lid. Here is a picture, sorry if real big. My G/F shannon is using it in the photo. I will bring her over the the better side yet, lol.

You can pretty much put any transparent colored thing underneath the apple. A good guide to taking apart the screen is http://norum.homeunix.net/~carl/mods/paint/index.html
It's not hard to do at all. There are just four 1.5mm hex screws, then the panel pops right off. Just make sure you don't use something hard like a screwdriver to take off the top, or the case will get marred.

here it is with the lights off. It looks a lot better in real life; unfortunately my camera does not take dark pictures very well.

Yeah, it would look really cool in blue. Nice work with the modding...I wouldn't take my machine apart for that but kudos to you for going ol' skool on that.
