Cult of Mac walks (http://cultofmac.com/tutorial-how-to-sell-your-iphone-online/2041) us through the process of selling your iPhone in anticipation of the 3G iPhone launch next week. It’s iPhone upgrade season. With the deluge of iPhone 3G rumors convincing just about everyone that now might be a good time to dump the old phone, in anticipation of getting one of the new models, here’s a tutorial to help you sell your iPhone safely, and get the best price. The guide actually does touch on some good tips, including how to wipe data from your phone and also the fact that unlocking your phone can get you $100 more than a locked one.

The biggest question, of course, is when to time your sale to avoid the rush of other sellers.

Already sold mine for $600 on eBay! (TODAY!)

The demand for iPhones is extremely high because the Apple store doesn't have them, so sell yours ASAP.

Wipe data is a good idea if you have personal or financial data on your phone.

Unlocking is a VERY good idea to make some extra cash. (Takes less than 10 mins!)

If you are selling on eBay I would use a 5 day listing no later than today, a 3 day listing no later than Thursday and a 1 day no later than Saturday. Reason being is that you don't want your buyer to find out new iPhones came out before they have paid for your item.. aka, buyers remorse.

If it was me, I would do a 3 day listing today and unlock it! Good luck guys!

IMO it's a little late to be trying to sell your iPhone for much $$$. With an almost certain announcement of the new iPhone(s) in less then a week, unless you can find a really "untechy" person that has no idea about a new version coming out and wont try to get their money back as soon as it does. Two months ago would have been a great time to sell it. I mean look at the iPod, not that many people want to buy a 5th generation iPod right now. :D

I put my used 8gb on craigslist for $400 (what I paid brand new 6 months ago) and got like 20 offers in the first few minutes from real buyers with phone #s and everything wanting to come pick it up.

So no, its not too late.

You'd be surprised at the demand for these phones still, and how there are less tech savvy people in this world than you allude to.

I just sold mine used and relatively beat up, unlocked, for $300. Not bad at all, and I almost felt bad for the guy considering he had no idea why I was selling it. But I did

Ah wish I'd bought an iPhone when they were going for £169 ($300) on O2. Could have sold it for nearly double that in the last couple of weeks.

mine has about a day left on ebay, I didn't unlock it but based on past sales I saw think it will still get around 400 which I will be happy with. its at 250 right now so i hope those last minute buyers will come in and jack up the price. might put my wifes on a 3 day listing tomorrow :)
then i just hope the 3g comes out on monday I can't go too long without my iPhone

I'm buying up as many 1st generation iPhones as I can. Then, when Apple fails to announce anything new at WWDC, I'll sell them back to the same people at a profit. My method can't fail... unless of course the rumors are true. ;)

I do wonder how much the market for first generation iPhones will change from before the announcements to after the announcements.

Partly depends on whether or not the data plan gets more expensive for 3G.

The iPhone v2 will not be available the moment the Keynote ends. Secondly, we will know when its in AT&T stores at least 3 days prior to its release. Furthermore, the current generation; what a brilliant device!

Re activate your old piece of crap from ATT. Unless you just switched for the phone. Can probably just swap out the sim.

I also am wanting to sell my iPhone. However I have to cancel my contract with AT&T because i'm moving to Japan so does anyone know if you have to call AT&T to do anything with the SIM card first, or do you normally mail off the iPhone with its included SIM card? Relatedly, if I can find someone to take over the contract for me, does anyone know how that process works, or if it's even possible?

I just put my cracked phone on ebay with a 24 hour listing. 12 hours to go and it's already hit $71 ... should go up another $100~$200 or so.

Not bad for a broken phone^^

I just put my sim in my old RAZR and man did the subway ride suck with no music this morning

Just to warn folks, there is no known secure way to wipe the iPhone. Even the article and the link to the "paranoid wipe" don't have a real system, at least not one that has been tested in anyway. If I was a betting man I would bet that someone out there is buying up iPhones with the idea of looking for personal data and then reselling them. If you read up (http://taisteal.atomiclemur.com/2008/05/read-this-before-you-sell-your-old-iphone-for-the-3g-iphone/) on how much you can recover you'd think twice about selling the iPhone to a stranger without a proven method to securely wipe your old data.

At the very least read this article (http://www.zdziarski.com/papers/wipe.html) about wiping the iPhone, which was written by the guy who wrote the scary forensic tool for the iPhone.

i could fall back on my old phone for a few days, but i don't quite understand how the sim card factors in either. if i wipe the phone using the methods suggested, is information still stored on the sim card?

why would i keep the sim card? isn't all the information stored on my computer? won't the person who buys the phone from me want the phone to have a sim card in it?

When I have sold other phones online (treo) I always take out the sim card and normally use it in my new phone. People should have a sim card with their carrier already and just pop that into the phone. Don't know if the iPhone is any different but the one I am selling I never said in the listing I would include a SIM (ends in 30 minutes, now up to $380!)

I have a 8 gig I bought on day 1. I bricked it by trying an early unlock program.

I couldn't live without so I bought another.

Later, I was able to restore and unlock the original and everything works fine. So I have a extra iPhone-- mostly pristine (a couple of minor scratches on the case).

I am thinking of selling it, but may just give it to my 11 year-old granddaughter. Each additional iPhone on an ATT family plan costs $20/month vs $10/per month for a non-iPhone. But the iPhone $20 includes all the data, messages, etc. These services cost per use on the $10 non-iPhone.

My granddaughter has run-up several bills of $200+ for these "extra" services that are part of the iPhone unlimited data plan (the $20/month charge).

My fears:

-- it would be a good target to get ripped off
-- will she take care of it
-- she has 2 brothers 8 & 9 with vanilla phones

Thouhts? Offers?

I know, I know...got to have it...

But really. Stop and think for a moment. Do you need another 2+ years on your contract?

The differences between the new and "old" iPhone will be? actual GPS? 3G?

I would think the software would be updated on both models, so those software features that could be implemented platformwide would be...

I don't need GPS, and my market does not have 3G (See here http://www.wireless.att.com/coverageviewer/popUp_3g.jsp).

More important to me is the idea that Apple will let thrid-party apps onto the phone--making it more of a smartphone rather than a networkphone (think thin client). I actually work in areas with no GSM covereage, and my iPhone, in those places, is a nice iPod...

So, I won't be selling my iPhone, and the upgrade to another iPhone will depend on how well Apple (and the competition) update their software and make the phones useful, "smart," and enjoyable to use.

My experience is that you go to AT&T, sign up, get a free phone, go home, stick in you SIM card, sign up for the unlimited data plan, and it all works. You can also get another SIM card for like 5 bucks if you loose one.

So is this correct:
Including the sim card does not make your information any more vulnerable than just the including the iphone?
Meaning the wipe (whether it works or not) is supposed to wipe the data off the sim?

I am going to be selling my 8gb most likely, but unfortunately can't include the original packaging and manual because it is in another state right now, does anyone think that will affect the price very much on ebay?

Also better to just unlock, or unlock and jailbreak?

Would the best thing to do not be to make the auction end about 90 mins after the keynote starts so you can withdraw the auction if it turns out the phone isn't available for days or there is a good upgrade scheme etc?

[edit] also what are the rules on shipping on ebay? Can you specify "it will be shipped one week from auction end" for example. To give me more chance to pick up the new one?

I looked at my local craigslist (LA) saw a bunch, listed mine to move quickly. $350... realizing now I could have easily asked for more, I just didnt want hassle and haggle because my phone had a few scuffs.

Within an hour of posting I got 12 replies. I finally pulled the ad all together, but not before getting 36 replies!

yeah, this seemed almost too good to be true when I read it.

I know it's all speculation, but does anyone have any insight into what the contract upgrade schemes might be like? (with O2 in particular) I'd like to sell my iPhone before the WWDC, but I don't want to be left with no iPhone and an 18month contract, that I can't upgrade to the 3G plan without significant penalty. Will it be a similar situation to that of O2 customers who bought 1st gen iPhones, with a penalty-free contract upgrade?

Everyone seems to have a different idea on what Apple will do upgrade wise

You have some that think Apple won't do anything, some that think you may get $100 off, others think $200 off, and some other crazy ideas

I don't know what to think to be honest

If I get any discount at all, I will be happy. If not, so be it

I don't think the demand for these used iphones will go down dramatically when 2.0 comes out, because most of the buyers want an unlocked iphone, and it'll at least be a little while before 2.0 is cracked (maybe).

I've ended up buying and selling about 5 iphones in the past month. I do Fixed Auctions (no bidding, just buying) w/ immediate Paypal purchase. That way I don't wait around for 3-7 days, only to end up with a deadbeat winner.

I've sold new 8gb refurbs for $480, cracked (but working ) POSs for $250-300, and normal wear-and-tear used ones for around $425. I could've probably made a few bucks more, but the assurance of knowing I have a serious buyer outweighs the option of dealing with an non-paying buyer.

All I know is that I've got about $550 waiting to be spent with my paypal mastercard.

The microphone on my 4GB stopped working, and when I took it into the apple store, the guy didn't run any tests except to check if it was still under warranty (obviously) and if I was running the latest firmware. Then he just popped my sim into an 8GB refurb and was like, ok, there you go.

but I kind of hate thinking about how that person will feel after he/she purchased my old iPhone for almost the full price and find out the newer one cost just about the same few days later. Imagine a non-tech savvy mother saved up and got it for her son's birthday.

I'll keep my iPhone until I have all the facts on the new one and the I will decide what to do with the old one. Besides, I really don't want to deal with donky!

I just bought one last week knowing people are rushing to sell them before the new one comes out.

Got it used for 250€. It will be a present for my father. He doesn't need 3G, just an easy phone with a big screen, email and clear text :)

Waiting for the next one will mean 2.0fw will not be unlocked, more expensive, and lots of buyers wanting to buy the old one too because the iphone hype here (Europe) will have just begun

I've had my iphone since the day they went on sale. Never any problems. I'm just going to keep it for the rest of my contract. At this point in time, not knowing what is to come on the next phone and since 3G means nothing to me and since I don't use it for business or anything fancy I guess hanging tight is the best bet. Good luck with the rest of you and your sales.

If he sends you the money what can be wrong? How close are you to his cap? Don't end until you verifiy the payment. At the worst, you have to start over again and deal with closing your sale and possible bad responses.

I highly reccomend that you ignore him. I had a guy offer me 650$ for my 4gb. He asked me to do the same thing. He emailed me and told me he sent the $. Pay pal then verified that the email was a fraud. The email said the $ was approved and will be deposited when the item tracking # is mail to a certain email @ mail.com. It was a fraud. Stay away! mine has about a day left on ebay, I didn't unlock it but based on past sales I saw think it will still get around 400 which I will be happy with. its at 250 right now so i hope those last minute buyers will come in and jack up the price. might put my wifes on a 3 day listing tomorrow :)
then i just hope the 3g comes out on monday I can't go too long without my iPhone

I think I'd rather give mine to someone who might want to try out an iPhone. Hand me downs!

Side Note: I think this is my 500th post! What do I win?

I love hand me downs....and my dad is notorious for giving me hand me downs...2 major ones in the past 3 years. It's looking very likely I'll go 3 for 3.

He just bought a 16GB iPhone last week as his Cingular 3125 had it's charging port die on it (and it was out of warranty). He's determined to get a the 3G version of it when it arrives...he's not going to sell his iPhone so I get another Hand me down whenever he gets his hands on the new one. Nearly Brand New at that.

Oh and the Cingular store he got his at didn't seem to have any issues with stock for the iPhone. Don't know how many they had but they at least had one of each of the models so he was able to choose. It was the Corporate Cingular store in the shopping center just west of the intersection of Kirk Road and Route 64 in St. Charles, IL.

I love my Cingular 2125 but I definitely won't turn down an iPhone...no matter what version it is. My 2125 isn't a 3G phone so I won't be missing any speed.

I love being an only child.

I've been wondering about all this too ... but it all really depends on the release date of the new phone. If its Monday, I'm afraid the prices for older units are going to go through the floor. Even on the unlocked / jailbroken ones.

I sold mine for $305 today.

8gb model, bought june 29th, 2007.

unlocked and jailbroken.

Didn't get up as high as I wanted, but I think it is a fair price for a 1 yr old phone that has scratches on the back casing and a dead pixel on the screen.

Looking forward to #2 :)

I think the old ones will remain popular up until the new one is announced. Right now all the stuff about the 2nd iPhone is just rumors and speculation. Because of no hard facts the current lack of supply for the current iPhone is driving the prices up. The minute a new iPhone is announced all those people waiting for the announcement to sell their old one will flood the market with old iPhones...and the prices will drop as competition happens on sites like eBay. Not to mention the supply of the new iPhone will essentially replace the supply for the old iPhone..thus there will be no shortage of iPhones as there is now.

The thing I'm wondering about is what happens if the new one is announced but the release date isn't till the end of June or August or something. What happens with the old iPhones between the announcement and when the new one is released? I think in that case the demand for the old one will go down somewhat...but not as much as when the new one is released.

Depends on the bank I believe. If it doesn't clear right away it usually takes 2-3 days...and it can be at any time of the day I think. It's whenever their bank says "yeah ok...transfer the funds".

Did it reach that price after the announcement....or was it that high before the announcement. There is a difference...since once you bid you can't retract unless you go through a lengthy process. Someone could have easily set their max bid to $400 and it got run up that far. As far as I know there's no way to retract a max bid on eBay...you just have to hope someone outbids you to get out of it. Now if an auction gets run up well after the announcement...that's different...that's genuine interest in the old iPhone...

On the news of the current Gen owners who bought their's after May 27th getting to swap their original iPhone for a new iPhone (as reported over at Gizmodo)...my dad falls in that category. He said though he made a promise to me when he told me he'd give me his old one. In order to fulfill that promise though he's doing the smart thing...trade in his original iPhone for a new one for himself...then buy a new one for me as my one and only Birthday/Christmas gift. I thought when I saw that story that would mean no iPhone for me....but it turns out it's exactly the opposite.

If I decide to ebay my iPhone and unlock it to increase the value, how safe is the unlocking tools these days. Right now I have a 1.1.4 virgin phone (never been jailbroken or unlocked) and don't want to end up with a brick.

Realizing that I could sell my unlocked 16GB model for 450, buy a 3G model, and actually get a hundred bucks back out of it is tempting.

...but now I have to decide. Do I really want a plastic version of my nice phone? Hm. I kinda like this solid, shiny, metal and glass job. It's a formidable piece of equipment to hold in your hand. It matches my iMac. The new ones seem a little like cheap plastic knockoffs.

But, erm, do is having a metal back worth $100?

Hm.

3G is nice I suppose, but I rarely sit on the thing surfing the web. The GPS might come in handy once in a while, but the locateme function has been spot on since they fixed it. The battery life was never an issue for me either. If the new model had a front-facing camera and could video chat, we'd be talking a major paradigm shift, but I can't help feeling like the new one is just a cheapening of the experience with a couple minor performance tweaks.

I got all excited about the 3g and sold mine on sunday for $385 (8GB) and now im kind of sad because i wont have an iphone for a month and the only thing added (for me at least) is the GPS. i live in alaska and there is not 3g and im going to have to be paying for it, im kinda pissed i sold mine. they better change the extra $10 in alaska at least since there is not 1 3g spot in alaska since att just got here in jan.

BillHarrison

I don't know why they didn't keep the old backing. It was nice.

A few good reasons:

Reception - A plastic case is probably very necessary for GPS, which is an extremely weak signal

Drop resistance - Plastic reduces weight as well as has some rebound to it, unlike metal which dents or bends

Price - Come on guys, its a PHONE after all - and phones are updated VERY quickly - I want a new phone every 2 years minimum, and I don't want to pay 599 each time. I am glad they reduced the price. Remember, its a PHONE. You carry it EVERY day. It needs to be a little dosposable. And the market moves so fast they need to be flexible.

And to the guy who said the metal back may be more important to him than 3g, gps, and saving 100 dollars? DUDE - Its a PHONE! Not a museum piece.

Hey guys,

Do you think the price of iPhone 2Gs will remain high on eBay because of the fact that you can't active the new iPhones outside of the AT&T store? I figured there would continue to be a demand for the old iPhones from people who refuse to use AT&T...

I was following the advice of the Cult of Mac tutorial, and I put my iPhone on eBay for a 1-day auction, since they recommended short auction times. However, after I did that, I read on eBay that it may take up to 24 hours before the item will be listed. It has been 5 hours now, and it is still not listed and you cannot search for it.

The actual listing is:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130230361955&_trksid=p3907.m32&_trkparms=tab%3DSelling

But if you try to search for it, or look for it in through the listings it is not there. I am afraid its not going to be listed until the very end or not at all. Any ideas on what I can do?

I think they will stay up, but not until the 3G comes out and people realize the higher data cost and no SMS's. At that time will the true value of the 2G iPhone be realized. Now isn't a good time to sell, IMO. Wait until the "cheap" 3G version comes out that will cost you $360 more over a 2yr contract ($15/month for 24 months).

The 2G is a much better value at $20/month. It works great.

OK, so I'm sure I can find my answer somewhere in here, but I just want to lay it all out there and hear someone respond directly to these questions.

I have a first gen iPhone that I've used officially with AT&T for 10 months. I've had it jailbroken on and off during that time and am comfortable with the whole process, but I don't know much about jailbraking as means to activation. Anyway, I found someone on Craigslist willing to buy it for $300. So, here are my questions:

1. If I use PWNAGE tool to unlock, jailbreak, and activate, will the buyer be able to just pop in his SIM card and start making calls?

2. If I put my (iPhone) SIM card into some super basic GSM cell phone, will I be able to make calls with my normal phone number?

3. When I buy the new iPhone 3G, will I be able to just pop my SIM into it? or, do I have to resign a contract with AT&T?

4a. I don't mind signing up for another two years, but will the contract cost me more per month?

4b. Can I just pick any plan, or do I have to get the equivalent of my current plan? (The reason I ask is that I currently have is way too many minutes and would love an opportunity to get a lower plan.)

Thanks in advance to whomever responds to this post. Like I said, I'm sure these questions aren't new, but I like the reassurance of a final thumbs up. Thanks!

everyone talking about the metal back as opposed to the plastic back is a sadly st-pid, im not saying, im just saying...think about it...plastic doesnt = retarded, im sure there is a very good reason..it will be slicker, have you held it in your hands yet.....no....you're a..mistaken...sorry, much love, but rethink your theoretical strategy, its wrong, the plastic back, im sure, will be slick, not like plastic, but more like a hybrid...my guess...

p.s. minor performance switch, you are, sadly wrong, what is wrong with..., 3g gps is much different from 2g..........location retarded........when 3g comes out you will buy it and realize how wrong you are, sorry, but true,

Is there a complete sentence in this mishmash of crackhead-spew? Seriously. Put down the pipe and formulate a thought.

You're sure there is a very good reason, but you have no idea what it is? You're right, there is a reason, but I'll let you hunt around for it. hint: it has something to do with the price, and the 3G.

I'm wrong, because you have a "guess" that the plastic is "more like a hybrid"? It's not composite, it's the same plastic as the old easily-scratched iPods. ...that I cracked two of.

And what is that at the end there, some sort of hypnosis routine? No, I probably will not buy it, because the marginal internet speed increase has been retarded to 1.7Mbps anyway, and the retarded GPS function still requires internet access to function. Useless out in the woods where I would need a more accurate service than than the iPhone I's cheesy cell-triangulation. The only other benefit to the 3G is that it's cheap. Whoopde do. Trade my expensive one for a cheaper one. Yay.

So, I have a perfectly durable $600 metal iPhone (that still hasn't a scratch on it after months of use), which does 100% of the things the new model does, at nearly the same performance level of the new, more fragile, cheaper model.

No, I think you will buy one, and probably love it, and go on to continue writing eloquent prose extolling its virtues.

And I'll wait for the next version, to see if by 2010 they've figured out that people want friggin copy & paste.
