Ok, So I have had a 5G iPod since it came out, I recived it as a gift for christmas the season it came out. (That Xmas) I have put the iPod through hell and back, taking it hiking, biking, on road trips, in my pocket at school. And with all the times I have had to recharge it, the battery has become warn down.

Now, everytime I plug it into the firewire it charges for it's well time, until the display on the iPod reads "charged". Then the battery lasts a Maximum of one hour. Is there anywere I can send the iPod to get a new battery installed, or can I purchase a new battery and have someone install it, or install it myself?

And of course my last option by a new iPod. Advice is much appreciated.

Apple actually offers a battery exchange program for iPods for $99 plus shipping. Check out the "Battery Replacement" section at http://www.info.apple.com/support/applecare_products/service/ipod_service.html

In fact your iPod with a fresh battery may last longer than my dad's new 20GB iPod, which lasts little under 8 hours with a full charge.

Make sure you've updated your firmware on your 1st gen iPod because this can cause it not to fully charge as well.
If that doesn't work try this and save some money:

http://www.pdasmart.com/ipodpartscenter.htm

$59 for DIY kit w/tools
$68 for their mail in service.
