View Full Version : OS X iPhone and OS X Leopard Banners at WWDC

Ok.. so the hype is building, and WWDC is less than 4 days away. We all know that the 3G iPhone is being introduced... duh. I'm not here to debate what features, form factors, and functions it will have.. etc.
However, I do want to hear your interpretation of this years slogan: "A landmark event.. in more ways than one." (http://gizmodo.com/367584/apple-wwdc-2008-dates-set-june-9th+13th-a-landmark-event-in-more-ways-than-one) As you know, apple usually hides bits of information in these banners, e.g. : "There's something in the air.." , macbook air.
What do you think this year's banner means?
Though it is far fetched, and WWDC is obviously a developer conference, I think it might signal the introduction of 2 new devices this monday. 1. The 3G iPhone of course, and 2. a MacTablet.. maybe.
Maybe it means:
1. just the Mac OSX Developer Track and the iPhone Developer track
or
2. the 3G iPhone and iPhone Nano. (much less likely IMO), I don't see the success of a full product line of iPods transferring to the iPhone. The amount of features that would need be sacrificed to reasonably spawn an "iPhone Nano" would inherently take away it's lure of being a "convergance device.")
just my opinion..
Thoughts? Criticisms? Interpretations of your own?

I think you're on target with this one. The WWDC website has the program clearly defined into 1) Mac OS X development, 2) iPhone apps development, 3) IT for Mac development.
It probably just eludes to the fact that there is now a mobile platform as well as a traditional computer platform. To boil it down to the basics (obviously you could argue that iPhone is in itself a mini-computer blah blah blah).

Thus, developers can develop application that can be leveraged across the platforms. This is a developer conference.
The fact that iphone uses a version of OS X is not new, this was announced with original iphone. This is just a basic developer message that OS X is easy and scalable.
Leopard as a product name will be around for as long as apple cares to name new releases as part of leopard. It does not indicate that they will not change features. Leopard has a lot of brand value now that apple spent some much money advertising it.

Perhaps the dropping the 'Mac' from Mac OS X signals a shift of OS X to other platforms, such MS. That's probably just wishful thinking though. But I would love to try Mac OS X without having to buy a Mac.

According to Wikipedia, landmark can mean:
"Landmarks in the British English sense are often used for casual navigation, such as giving directions. This is done in American English as well."
This could possible mean GPS. A landmark literally meant a geographic feature used by explorers and others to find their way back or through an area.

:apple: will make Mac OS X and OS X iPhone run on .mac similar to google desktop. This way regardless of the platform mobile or desktop or even the architecture PPC or x86 it will run on almost any internet connected related device.
This way you buy the OS and pay a subscription for the applications (consumer apps only). This would cut cost and also show a greener :apple: to the environmentalist.
Hence, the Blue (Leopard Server wallpaper), the Purple (Leopard wallpaper) and .mac (blue splash). Integration, availability and flexibility. :D

Haha, funny you say that, I was just discussing the idea of "a LANDMARK event" hinting to GPS.. if apple does something big(innovative) with GPS (which it most likely will), i can see steve blowing it WAY out of proportion in the Keynote, and alluding to the banner just like he did when he introduced the air.. ha. I'm giddy with excitement..
I think you're on target with this one. The WWDC website has the program clearly defined into 1) Mac OS X development, 2) iPhone apps development, 3) IT for Mac development.

Ya, that might be the most plausible interpretation. It would show that apple is Really trying to emphasize the fact that the iPhone REALLY IS a new computing platform.. i.e. : trying to elevate it way above other phones, and with good reason :D

Anyone thought of this? The iPhone SDK comes with an iPhone Simulator. Now, if I remember correctly, it is actually running iPhone OS X for Intel, it does not emulate an ARM processor. That means they already have iPhone OS X for Intel and ARM. That means Cocoa Touch is ARM and Intel, and that means that we have more options as far as hardware.

I really hope the new iPhone will be out sometime soon.... Cause from what I've seen.. every phone and device needs to pass threw the FCC and so far everything that went threw FCC is no secret. Every device has bin heard of.... Cept the iPhone. Eather its like really top secret or its not approved yet for sales on the 9th.. :( O well but lets hope for the best. From the rumors and pictures I have seen, so far the new iPhones are boxed and ready for sale after the launch at WWDC. But I doubt the iPhone will be out for sale the same day as the announcement. So far I'm clueless and hope its gonna be out during WWDC.... :apple:

This looks like the entrance, registration area. I doubt they would trump SJ's keynote with pictures of the new products as you walk in.
This is exactly what I was thinking. Why have the new stuff 'out there' before the keynote? OSX iPhone and OSX Leopard are extensions of the two bridges and are relatively obvious, thus no need to 'hide' them. And after the keynote, the banners would reveal another banner behind!

That's different as its just a tag line, but a deliberate clue.
I'm talking about actual products being shown on these kind of banners. There is no way Apple would put a redesigned MBP or iPhone 2 on those banners, if the product was to be announced at the keynote.

The MB and MBP have accelerometer's in them to detect sudden drops, one could assume that the non-SSD MBA has one too.

They should be careful with the word "world". The iphone is pretty crappy and only has a fraction of features compared to a lot of Japanese phones. Who are they trying to kid exactly? Really its not even a matter of opinion, its just not possible to argue that its more advanced than other phones in asian countries.
Americas most advanced phone? Sure. Europe's most advanced phone? Maybe after 3g, right now its doing very bad there. Asia's most advanced phone? Well thats just funny.

Accelerometer coming to MBA? :apple:
FYI
MBA and all Apple notebooks have an accelerometer (not sure about the older portables, damn sure about the current product line). It is called SMS (sudden motion sensor).
They can exploit it for increased functionality.... but this is not new... will be just old wine in new bottle.
The MB and MBP have accelerometer's in them to detect sudden drops, one could assume that the non-SSD MBA has one too.

I just had a sobering thought based on a comment here a few posts back:
Most everyone has seen that Ballmer video where he laughed at the iPhone - of course that interview was months before the iPhone became an actual reality and now, a year into it, it would be safe to say that even if Ballmer hates it, he'd have to admire the device period.
In that video he makes a distinct point about Windows Mobile devices, and as such because Microsoft doesn't make PDAs, they're simply licensing the software to hardware makers, etc - same old same old for Microsoft.
But what if...
What if Apple is about to push a device on the market come Monday's keynote - and also as stated before they have used WWDC to promote some rather big items in the past - that's more akin to a PDA as we know them to be, based on OSX as the operating system, not quite a tablet-sized device but still very tiny and portable.
That earlier picture with the 120 or 128GB Flash storage mentioned shows 10" LCD from what I can make out, widescreen of course, but it's that "Programmable LCD Keyboard" that has really got me thinking. Sure the 3G support at the bottom and 11n are expected, but...
Is the first serious Apple tablet device about to drop on Moscone Center and the world on Monday? 10" seems a bit small to me, and there's no way in hell an iPhone, even an updated one, will have a 10" LCD on it unless they're moving from 16:9 ratios to 2.35:1 or something. 10" LCD is fairly large compared to a PDA or anything even in that class, sooo...
If that image shown on that screen is accurate, it can't be anything but a tablet - they wouldn't put a "Programmable LCD Keyboard" on a real laptop as it wouldn't be necessary, unless they about to come out with something like a Nintendo DS device: two screens, both can be used for displays, with one capable of touch operation.
Man I hate speculating, but I can see over the next few days this thread is just going to explode with such things. :)
Oh well, it's something to do I guess, right?

huh.. well i can't see a full 6-axis accelerometer akin to one in the iPhone being of any use in a MBA. I do see it proving useful in a MacTablet.. of some sort.. if one is in development..
I would like to clear that current :apple:-portable line-up all sport an 3-axis (x,y & z axes) accelerometer. Its only use on the MB, MBP & MBA is for sensing sudden moments to lock the HDD to avoid accidental shock damages. There are various third party apps on the web like AMS_Tracker which give the coordinate values from the SMS-accelerometer in these devices.
However, apple may use these coordinates in the future as a form of input having learned this from implementation on the iPhone. However the use of the SMS on Mac Notebooks wont be as elegant as iPhone. Just imagine a slim, geeky looking guy swinging his notebook like crazy:eek:.... Not user friendly... not :apple:ish enough ;)

Asia's most advanced phone after everything is revealed and all of our mouths drop to the floor and drip drool . . yes.

Well, I'm giddy as a school girl... :D
Couple of FYIs that apparently can't be overstated:
1) Macrumors.com is an Apple news/rumor/follow Steve's every move/let those of us who can't be at WWDC know what's going on site. If you are going to complain about what the founder/owner puts on the front page, then please go start your own site because it doesn't make sense to come to an Apple site and complain about Apple related articles. Thank you if you made it this far. :o
2) The World Wide Developers Conference is for (wait for it....) developers!!!!! It is not a hardware forum. Thus, while we will more than likely be hearing about hardware related items, the main focus is development of software for all Apple platforms (which now includes the iPhone in case you missed it).
Mm mm mmm . . some one is representing out in Cali . . ;)

I know this because I am NOT subject to NDA but see reality when it hits me in the face.

I think I might have figured it out once again. Since there have been clues in the past sign for Macworld and now WWDC, I thought the theme for WWDC with the Two Golden Gate Brides separted, but still connected was about possible new features in the new iPhone including: GPS and iChat. But now that I'm seeing the new WWDC signs that show the Mac software going with the iPhone software going together into one. I think it might be a Mac Tablet. I could be very off, but it could be very revolutionary. A portable tablet(possibly about 7") that has a mix of iPhone and Mac software. It would be amazing to have a "computer" that could make calls and do things of a cell phone. I think most likely it would be a bluetooth only device because it would look weird holding a tablet next to your ear. What a great idea. But still... I could be way, way off on another planet and might not even be close. It could just be a simple representation of working hard on software that is become similarly closer on two platforms. I know dissapointing. But Apple isn't really the kind of company that would release dissapointing stuff.. that's Microsoft' s business. If you think about it, for the most part Apple has never released anything that wasen't exciting or revolutionary.( in recent years.) So no matter what people say.. I bet we'll all be smiling on Monday. It's been like that for a couple of years now. Can't wait. :)

I have absolutely no idea how ecstatic developers are supposed to be at the highly narrow-audience targeted "MacBook touch" or anything else, next to new things they care about (SDKs, iPhone software, etc), but I can see revised ACDs perhaps, but unlikely on stage. Whatever come of it, we won't know until Lord Steve reveals to us the almighty new stuff...

This is highly anticipated and am sure we will definitely see the Wiimote application of the IPhone line device pretty soon. Also much needed is a remote control better then the current infrared one for the :apple:tv. And the Wiimote will be the most elegant implementation.
But this will have nothing to do with accelerometer on the MBP, MB and MBA as those accelerometer cant be directly used for this application. That was what I suggested in my prev post.... But :apple: WiiMote .... I will buy in a heartbeat! Not one but two :D

Also, rumors have been circulating about a design change in the macbook and macbook pro lines, w/speculation about a new macbook for monday, so maybe it will get a macbook air face lift??
lastly, putting pics of not-yet-released products on the banners, making it really obvious, is not something Apple does, but the orange icon next to the iPhone in the big side wall banner looks like its blurred out and the right half of the notebook next to the sideways iPhone looks thicker. I know there were photos posted earlier showing a froward facing view, but that had to be messed with to get it to look like that, so...what else was messed with?

Let me introduce you to a little friend of mine called sense.
Perhaps for now. But what really nearly killed Apple is that they didn't license their OS. In fact, it's a problem that they will always face. Apple claims to be a hardware company. But they're not really. If you're going to divide the computer world into software and hardware makers, well Apple doesn't fit either. Their hardware only runs one OS (ok it can run windows, but how many people are buying it just for Windows? Too expensive), and the OS it runs only runs on Apple hardware.
That aside, Apple's growth is severely limited by the above factors. If Apple doesn't let other companies make hardware to run their OS, they're doomed to follow the same path they did in the late 80s and 90s. Think about it... what happens as Apple's marketshare grows. HP and Dell's market shrinks. So they approach Apple to make computer to run Apple's OS. Apple says no. The market wouldn't stand for Apple being the only computer manufacturer. HP, Dell, etc. have stockholders to please and they'll fight back. But it won't get that far. Apple won't get more than 15% market share most likely. But that's still all rebound growth and good for the company right now. They're on the upswing.
But what happens with the iPhone platform? Think of the new little war the iPhone started as analagous to the PC war the Mac started. Apple is following the same path. They start out big with a great product that they completely control. They have a huge share of the market. Others start to enter the ring. This isn't an audio playback toy. No. The war has now been taken to the big leagues of the business world where companies outfit their employees with a whole slew of product at once. Palm, Moto, Rim, everyone will want to compete in that realm and they'll ask Apple if they can make a product that can use the iPhone OS. Apple says no. So, all these other companies are forced to do it themselves and eventually they'll get close enough and charge half as much and the iPhone will slip into a niche market as suddenly it's not compatible with whatever open OS fills the void. Windows95 filled that void years ago in the PC world. It wasn't as good as a Mac, but it was close enough, the computers were cheaper, and they were more powerful.
Just a thought. I've seen others mention it before. Apple may be happy being an expensive niche product that is known to be the best. But I worry as a stockholder that the current high is just that, a high. Might even get higher, but there will be a limit if they don't play nice with others, and once there's something competitive and open for all to license, every cell and pda manufacturer will jump on board, and Apple's PDA/Phone market will plumment like the mac did.

Wow, Apple really is heavily branding OS X, and as others have noted, without the "Mac". Looks like, as others have said, that the 2 bridges represent dual OS X development platforms, one for computers and one for mobile devices.

Here is the one thing I don't understand about the rumor mill. So many people have their hands in the production process----why are there not more leaks? Case in point: Graphic designers, assemblers, shippers, hardware vendors, even the people who make the boxes! An NDA only goes so far...

First off, no, flash memory is not going to be available in 120 GB. Since it doubles, it would go to 128 GB. And so far, a 128 GB flash drive is still extremely expensive. I think the MOST we will see in the new iPhone is 32 GB, with POSSIBLY a 64 GB, but at a major premium.
Secondly, the reason it's called "OS X iPhone" is because it's just that... OS X on the iPhone. The iPhone is not a Macintosh, it's simply another piece of hardware built by Apple. Therefore, it runs a slightly modified version of Mac OS X. But it's not a Mac OS. It's an iPhone OS, hence, OS X iPhone.

nothing new to see here, move along.
they are just posters. Of course they arent gonna show posters with the "new" iphone on them, they probably wont go up until monday. That would be a leak waiting to happen.
"Yes mr security guard, i need you to guard these large posters". haha
i think the speculation is really getting out of hand with all these threads. I love reading the threads, but man, people... GET A GRIP :)
I have to bite my tongue and remind myself that not everyone lives here in San Francisco, and doesn't know the lay out of Moscone West convention center (where the event will be held).
This is a building with a 3 story lobby, with full glass windows wrapping around it. Windows that allow FULL and CLEAR view of these banners.
Folks, stop wasting your time trying to read ANYTHING into these banners!
We all know Apple isn't going to leak anything via these banners, more so since they've been up since yesterday in FULL and CLEAR view of anyone walking down the street and happens to turn their head and look inside the lobby.
Just hold your breaths and wait till Monday when we'll finally hear what Steveo has to say for himself and we can then all jump onto the Apple Store website or go stand in line at the Apple store and plunk down our credit cards for whatever it is thats shiny and new that we couldn't live without on Sunday night.
And yes... if it's a new iPhone I'll be in line, as my housemate wants her first iPhone and seems as good a time as any.

It would be dumb to think there is NOTHING to gain from interpreting banners hanging in the Moscone West Convention Center. I mean, in January they did have posters which read "There's something in the air." Then this site's admin, Arn, put that together with some insider tips to announce beforehand that the Macbook Air was going to be unveiled. I didn't believe that was true at the time. So we were able to figure out an entirely new product would be released before Steve said a word. I don't think that is something to overlook.
That being said, I don't see much in these banners to suggest anything out of the ordinary, besides the odd accelerometer icon and search icon. I just think its funny how many people don't realize perspective in their everyday lives and don't have the ability to visualize what things look like head-on. Maybe its just something that artists can see? After taking tons of photos and using Lightwave enough, its easy as pie. No new products in that banner.
I think I'm going to take a break and go outside this weekend. You know, where all the plants and animals live? Get some fresh (macbook-less) air. Then immediately get back onto my MBP at 11:55am CDT on Monday. Or maybe just get in line at the Apple Store and use the iPhone optimized version just in case. But until then...birds, trees, and this creature called a girlfriend?

i am very very preoccupied because i don't see any cover banner.DAMN DAMN.
Just pointing out the obvious in an arrogant manner because some people have got this unnecessary "OMG that's not an MBA" thing going on, which is just risible.
Of course, it might look just like the MBA and not be, but my point is, somebody takes one ordinary photo looking in from an angle and a handful of people react like they've never seen anything from an angle before. "The sides ARE SHORTER" and such. We got some people correcting them, using technical lingo (which is fine, but this isn't rocket science). Maybe MacRumors has a whole bunch of users who have recently lost one of their eyes. I guess whoever takes photos like this one should in the future consider these -- for lack of a better term -- disabled people.

i completely agree about the angle thing, and i never would have found this if i hadnt ran across the FULL size (its quite large) version on flickr. http://flickr.com/photos/gernot/2554181096/sizes/o/ Anyways, if you look at the poster closest to us, the one with the corner of the "MBA", you can see about a quarter of an inch from the right side and about a half of an inch up from the bottom there is a darker spot. This is what the sleep light looks like on the current MBA when off... but on the MBA, the light is next to the IR sensor on the right side. That should be easy to see on the really long poster on the wall, but its not there. Also, the IR sensor looks... the wrong proportions. Too thick. The Air's is really thin.
I know its been said its probably nothing, but i couldnt help but notice that.
Thats all
EDIT: I was looking at more pictures of the Air on the Apple website, and that little thing is there... i just dont remember it!

If Apple has made it this far without us seeing any "real" images of new products, it really doesn't seem likely that they would plaster an image of a completely redesigned product in an easily viewable location.

I'm kinda stuck on the comment earlier where someone pointed out the big banner at Moscone Center not saying "MacOS X Leopard" and just "OS X Leopard" now. In my experience over the past 5 years or so, Apple has never had a banner like that one, it's always been branded as "MacOS X" or "Mac OS X".
I'm kinda convinced in some respects that "A landmark event." is a hint at GPS capability for the iPhone, possibly one of the Macbooks as well if not all, it's not that hard to add to the present state of the technology. And "In more ways than one." is obviously hinting at more than one big announcement, soooo...
While I've always been a proponent of the concept that Apple simply could never ever offer OS X as a standalone product - the sheer idea of it and the nearly infinite variety of hardware they'd end up trying to support is simply unfathomable and couldn't be done - what if they've decided to "bridge" the gap once and for all between their OS and generic PCs? Hmmm... It's not like it can't be done absolutely because it can (OSx86, obviously is another "bridge" in some respects). But if this is the case, good lord, can you imagine the storm it would whip up?
Monday will be very interesting, indeed.
In more ways than one.

It's because the software designers never see the product, the hardware designers barley know whats going on with the software, and when it comes to to making sure all that silicon fits inside its plastic and metal housing, they use a mock up made of wood, cut to the exact specs. That's what I read.

Yeah I know.
As for the whole Mac OS X --> OS X thing, you guys will be CRYING like babies when nothing special happens. There won't be any PCs running OS X at all.
They most likely did this because there are two devices, one of which is not a Mac (contrary to the iPhone junkies) that run the same OS. There might even be a third.
But keep building up the hype... I have my crybaby photo ready and rearing to go for Monday evening. All the Mac Book and Mac Book Pro redesign crybabies will be there, along with the Mac Mini and ACD crybabies.
There might be a 3G iPhone, there most likely will be a lot of talk about the SDK and the release of a full version since what we have now is a Beta. Hopefully there will be an up and running app store, contrary to the iPhone junkie's who think WWDC will answer and solve everyone's issues with the iPhone.

Uhm...it is just MaxOS 10.x....
the X only stands for 10, not MacOs eXtreme , MacOs Xcalibur etc etc.
Many people will call it different things. for most its easier to say OS X rather then "OS 10" but both will be right until OS 11 comes out (where people may say OS XI (ex eye))

Since everyone here is speculating, I am going to make a huge guess...
...Which is most likely wrong but.
It is a developers conference... What if the dropping of 'Mac' from the OS X name implies it going cross platform. I'm afraid to even say this here but, PC?
Now I know thats blasphemy to most and I don't much disagree, but I have always thought that it could be a quite effective strategy to get PC users to cross over.
So I'm probably way off and the dropping of 'Mac' from the name simply due to its integration with the iPhone. But I can't help thinking about the two bridges in the invitation... and the fact that it is highly anticipated that .mac will disappear and be replaced with 'me.' I just can't help but wonder why they are ridding themselves of the Mac reference, the service very well could have been named mobile.mac?
hehe ok, pure speculation is over now.
EDIT: I just saw many other people making the same guess so disregard this :)

I think they didn't put Mac in front of OS X Leopard for one of two reasons:
1. They couldn't fit it on the banner without making the font smaller.
2. The iPhone banner with Mac OS X iPhone wouldn't be appropriate since the iPhone isn't a Mac.
There's no way that Apple will be selling OS X for Windows boxes in the first place. Steve Jobs hated clones and killed them off after coming to Apple in 1997. It would drive away sales from their hardware.

I don't think so.

There are 10 versions of Mac OS, in which apple is interchangeably using X instead of saying 10 because it just sounds better.
Mac Os 10.5 = Mac Os X Leopard.

Umm, look at all of Apple's own marketing and labeling. In fact, on your own computer (you are using a Mac, right?) look at your "About this Mac" dialog in the Apple Menu. What are you running? It says "Mac OS X" then underneath that "Version 10.5.3" or whatever version you're running. Look at the online Apple Store: Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard.

Doesn't really apply to what I was saying, but you're right to a degree. At heart, they are the same core operating system, but they have different GUI's and different frameworks applied, so to a developer, they're close to be completely different. I'm not a developer, so take the exact terminology with a grain of salt.

Apple has needed a serious competitor to Microsoft's Office paradigm. With iWork completely up to spec, all that's left for Apple to convince people are Outlook and Exchange alternatives.
I originally thought that it was way too soon for us to be hearing anything about a new iWork, since '08 hasn't been out for very long, but all the speculation about a possible OS upgrade has me thinking otherwise since Leopard came out months after iWork '08.
Often times it's the little things that Apple announces that has a big impact, personally I would love (as I have anxiously hoped for the last two iWork releases) to see Apple get firmly behind the OpenDocument standard for its suite of programs so that iWork gains a TRUE place in a mixed platform environment. OpenDocument makes a lot of sense, because
1) Apple has a history of supporting open standards where it bolsters its business and reduces the complexity on their own developers,
2) it would be FAR easier for Apple to implement than native support for OOXML (heck, it's even easier for Microsoft to implement in their OWN product than OOXML),
3) No more dialogs asking, "Do you want to save this in iWork '06 format, iWork '08 format, iWork.... " What's good for one is good for everyone.
4) OpenDocument is extensible so they could... possibly... implement such features as Numbers' multi-table-on-a-single-sheet feature (not sure about the viability of this one), and
5) it will make Apple not look like they're drinking Microsoft's Kool-Aid, while, when native ODF support is added to MS Office next year, Apple will be totally compatible and competitive with not just most Windows users but Linux/open source advocates too.
Of course, the obvious argument against this is the tremendous effort that Apple has put into evolving its own XML document format.

Apple's clearly refuting your idea there.
jW
Excuse me, but it has to be said. If you want to talk about 'Apple refuting your idea!', then you should start to think what Apple really talks about.
First of all (you can check that in various Quicktime streams), his Jobsness himself always refers to "Mac Os TEN". He will start his keynote speech with several toutings of how "Mac Os TEN" developed to be the best OS in the world. There is noone on this whole side, who would talk about "Mac OS eks", so to say. Though "Mac OS Sex" would be a cool name ;)
The X itself is a marketing idea. Not that it's the Roman number, but it also perfectly represents the Unix foundation. In case you didn't know it, you have a fully mf fine X Server working on your Mac. You also have this creepy terminal, that uses..tadaaa...Unix talk, commands and ways of interacting.
Guess why many Linux freaks keep a Terminal in their OS X Dock.
And Leopard still is OS X in the core. It is an evolved kernel from Cheetah. I had the first OS X on a double boot iBook. Yes, we double booted and we used something creepy called Classic. And I can still clearly see a lot of similarities to 10.0.0, be it only the Menu Bar design.
I think we will see OS 11 rather sooner then later. It will again be built from ground up to fully leverage say 3D desktop and Multitouch capabilities (as you have to do some paradigm shifting, like we had with the jump from 9 to X).
But as long as we don't have a paradigm shift with major system parts, we will talk about Mac OS Ten.

Sorry, I don't get the "in the elevator" thing, is it some joke about something that happened in the past?

Anyone thought of this? The iPhone SDK comes with an iPhone Simulator. Now, if I remember correctly, it is actually running iPhone OS X for Intel, it does not emulate an ARM processor. That means they already have iPhone OS X for Intel and ARM. That means Cocoa Touch is ARM and Intel, and that means that we have more options as far as hardware.
Didn't think of that. Good catch

What I was referring to, which you don't disagree with it seems but the person I was responding to did, is that Mac OS X is a product name, not a version number. I think this is fairly apparent, as otherwise we would be using OS XVI or 16 by now. I don't expect to see OS 11 for another 15 years or so, just going by Steve's statements, because there's no need. We're not just talking paradigm shift, Mac OS X would have to lose it's UNIX underpinnings to no longer be considered Mac OS X and move to OS 11 or something else. That's not going to happen until something better comes along, and there's no sign of any such thing on the horizon.

Something worth remembering:
back in 2005 (at WWDC) SJ was discussing Transitions. Particularly, he was talking about the PPC --> Intel transition. He said that we made a new transition at the beginning of the millennium w/ OS 9 --> OS X. He also said (and I quote) "OS X has set up Apple for the next 20 years" - so there are many more versions of OS X to go. (just something interesting I thought I'd draw attention to because a lot of people are mentioning OS 11).

Crunchgear has posted (http://www.crunchgear.com/2008/06/05/os-x-leopardiphone-banners-appear-at-moscone/) the first banners at WWDC which promote both "OS X Leopard" and "OS X iPhone". The "OS X Leopard" banner reads "The world's most advanced operating system," while the "OS X iPhone" banner reads "The world's most advanced mobile platform."

Beautifully designed banners there, I must say. It's going to be such a great week next week for OS X iPhone & Leopard. I'm really looking forward to it.

Sorry, I didn't want to sound rude or anything like that. Well, we disagree nevertheless to some extent.
First of all, and that is your point taken, OS X is somehow a product name. It sure is.
Nevertheless I have to stress that there are no real changes in OS X thus far, that I would consider worthy to call a version upgrade. To put it in a not so great analogy, Leopard to me is OS X SP4. ;)
10.0 was more or less still public beta or RC, 10.1 (Gold Master) introduced those nice UI bezels we like so much. 10.2 (aka OS X SP1) was the first usable OS X in my eyes, and the first time since 9 that we had spring-loaded folders *sigh*. We had to wait for 10.3 (OS X SP 2 respectively) to have Labels (though Exposé was nice), and finally in 10.4 (OS X SP 3) we have Desktop search and this unnecessary Widget stuff.
I'm still on Tiger, as I don't see any reason to 'upgrade' to Leo. But I fear that Leo will still rather feel like the same OS X I'm used to for years. It will still suck on mixed networks, still be first really usable with the .4 release (sorry, Tiger was quite solid on 10.4.2, so Leo still has some catching up to do). It will give me some irrelevant crap features I don't need (e.g. Stacks, Spaces, Time Machine, reflective dock) but my Safari will be snappier. But it is no major leap. At least that's my opinion after spending some hours with it on a work machine.
That's all I'm trying to say.
And I think the next paradigm shift is not too far away. I'd guess there will be no 10.8, and 10.7 will only happen, if 10.6 will still support PPC.

I agree with swagi in that I don't see a huge shift between the flavours of OS X over the last few years that would warrant a re-classifying. We've still got the whole Unix base and micro-kernel style operating system now as we did with Cheetah, but Apple has been steadily building its core functions on to that stable base. Things haven't really changed, they've just been improved upon and new things added with the releases. And I always say OS Ex Leopard, as I think that's cooler.
Also not being a big fan of widgets I didn't bother upgrading to Tiger on my ancient Tibook (God rest its soul), but I think you're wrong, swagi, not to jump on Leopard, if only for Spaces. Whenever my Linuxy friends showed me their boxes before the only thing that really got me a bit envious was the different desktops, and it is so convenient not to have to rearrange all your windows all the time. I'm a physics student and being able to dedicate an area to research and notes and problem sheets for each of electromagnetism, quantum, thermodynamics etc. whilst having iTunes open, and Safari on macrumors :), and email and calendars in another is just such a wonderful use of technology that it makes me all goose-pimply just thinking about it. How can you be happy with less? Quick-look as well is worth it I would have said. When I find myself on a windows pc I have to force myself not to hit the spacebar all the time.
I feel inclined to ask why you think Leopard is unusable? If you mean unstable, I'm not sure where you get that from as the two kernel panics in 9 months I've had (neither on 10.5.3) were from freeware games I had downloaded before I installed Leopard, whilst I was (typically) running a bunch of other stuff. And I thought that was pretty understandable. (Although when it did finally go it went with a vengeance... it was quite exciting considering its rarity!) Also I've had no problems networking on my college network... I'm no expert on this but I think that networking in Leopard is supposed to be vastly improved from that in Tiger. It certainly seems pretty easy... and certainly much easier than on a PC. I still don't have a clue about that.
Sorry to bang on about it. Very excited about Monday, though, although I'll not be getting iPhone 2.0 because of the risk: I'd have to carry it around with me (and no doubt drop/tread on/run over) all the time.
Next paradigm shift not too far away? Let's hope so... although in my opinion it's going to be much harder to make it significantly better now. I really think Leopard has pretty much everything going for it.
OK maybe not everything. But a heck of a lot.

You do realize it's a cellular phone, first and foremost, right? And that's what people do with cellular phones these days, they take 'em with 'em as leaving it someplace makes it really hard to answer a phone call without the cellular phone? :D

The question is: How far do they take the big cats? How far do they take Leopard?

Jun 6, 2008, 08:59 PM
I think the best transition from cats would be to follow up Leopard with Leo which can be a cat but can also be a constellation or a sign of the zodiac.
OS X Leo could then be followed by OS X Orion, OS X Pegasus, etc...
That said, we are on the verge of a major paradigm shift that can justify the switch from OS X or at least from cat names: Touch technology.
Designing an OS from the ground up to use touch as the main form of navigation is a major shift – enough to justify moving to OS X {insert new naming scheme here}.

@br0adband:
OK OK, maybe I didn't put that very well . But the point was that I do know that's what one does with a phone, which is why I have a £20 phone which will not be a major catastrophe to annihilate. I won't get an iPhone as I'd much rather have several cheaper specialized things that are better at their jobs (or as good as they can be, when it comes to standard telephony), than one converged expensive device. Which is also why I don't understand a desire for high-res cameras on phones. If you want to take decent pictures, get a decent camera.
Not that I don't think they're awesome technologically: I do :).
On the OS branding thing, I think that "Snow Leopard" is pretty cool, so maybe they'll do some variants on that. "Clouded Leopard" for instance, could possibly indicate a stronger relation with online services, which seems on the cards with the whole me.com thing.

If you really want to fan the flames of the rumor mill, don't you think it's suspicious that the iPhone blocks out the name of the machine it's in front of?
On a more serious note, whilst the bottom of the Bezel is wider than the sides on the Air, there is a much more glaring difference, and that it the thickness of the front edge of the machine. I'm sat typing this on my MBA, and there is no way the front edge is anywhere near as wide as that on the poster. Added to that is the dimensions of the IR sensor on the right hand front edge: On the MBA it's much thinner, wider and further to the left than the one on the photo.
I've attached a couple of images to illustrate what I mean:
The first one is from the poster, the second one is an MBA from Apple's site. It could be perspective, but there's quite a difference...
woah. I was skeptical before, but I think you might be onto something. Oh well, I don't really care since I'm not in the market for a computer. I'm more interested in hearing something about 10.6 (or whatever it's going to be)

...and this unnecessary Widget stuff.
I don't see how widgets are unnecessary. For you they might be, which if fine, but for the rest of us that develop widgets and use them on a daily basis, these things are useful. Especially Web Clip widgets.
At least that's my opinion after spending some hours with it on a work machine.
I don't want to assume that you haven't used Leopard, as I'm sure you have, however, if you're using Tiger then you're not using Leopard on a daily basis, or especially in a productive environment (or maybe you are, which would fully justify your opinion).
Either way, I use a Mac Pro at work on a mixed OS X and Windows network and both work hand-in-hand without any hitches. Stacks, for me, is invaluable. It really is. Especially when I'm working on about five or six different projects at once. Time Machine is fantastic. I can't express that enough. Regarding the Dock, I quite like it. I don't hate it but when I'm working, I have the dock set to Hide, so it makes no difference.
Great post overall, but I just wanted to add my two cents! :)

To put folks at ease on this Stevenote eve.
Apple NEVER puts an unannounced product on a banner for people to see.IF.
IF. there is a new product or piece of software on a banner it is always covered in black.
They may put little hints in but there sure don't post a picture or drawing of it anywhere for any eye to see.

Thank you for this, there are still sane people on this site :)
Guess we all just have to wait an see... this really is the calm before the storm now :)

I'm sure you guys have already covered this:
Why are there no covered banners?

Because Apple has nothing to hide.
Or wants us to think they have nothing to hide.
Or maybe the iPhone's form factor won't actually change so the banners won't become redundant if they do update them.

Engadget has a shot during WWDC 2007 of a covered banner just near the keynote hall on the third floor of Moscone West. We haven't seen shots of third floor banners yet so I hope there's something up there.

Time Machine is fantastic. I can't express that enough.
I made my own Time Machine with rsync and launchd scripts and a lot of manual tweaking and time spent monitoring, double-checking and making sure everything was working like it should be. Then Leopard came out, and the solution was so simple! And now that my Airport Disk can be used for Time Machine, I'm a very happy camper. Three computers in the house backed up to 2 external hard drives, every hour, wirelessly! With nearly NO EFFORT on my part. Simply the most amazing feature to happen to any operating system in a long time.
