Crunchgear has posted (http://www.crunchgear.com/2008/06/05/os-x-leopardiphone-banners-appear-at-moscone/) the first banners at WWDC which promote both "OS X Leopard" and "OS X iPhone". The "OS X Leopard" banner reads "The world's most advanced operating system," while the "OS X iPhone" banner reads "The world's most advanced mobile platform."

Interesting to see "OS X iPhone" as it appears they are now quite serious about the iPhone as a true development platform (not that they weren't before but but but...)

Monday should be full of surprises...

Well rumors indicate that they're upgrading the iPhone case as well - wouldn't that make these posters obsolete, since they display the old iPhone...???

It's Apple related, it just happened, it's about WWDC on Monday.

Because WWDC is a developer's conference and people develop for a particular operating platform: aka OS X. There's OS X for the Mac and now OS X for mobile (iPhone).

Sorry if you get slammed by a billion other posts about this. I'm excited too, but it's a DEVELOPER'S CONFERENCE. I'm not expecting much hardware information outside of a new iPhone.

No at the right on the wall.
You have upper-right with black - pink/purple gradient and icons, in the middle some iPhone and some black (for me it looks as a screen) and you have bottom-right with blue - black gradient and icons.

Edit: ow I see, the black is the wallpaper of the macbook air , dumb dumb dumb :(

They should be careful with the word "world". The iphone is pretty crappy and only has a fraction of features compared to a lot of Japanese phones. Who are they trying to kid exactly? Really its not even a matter of opinion, its just not possible to argue that its more advanced than other phones in asian countries.

Americas most advanced phone? Sure. Europe's most advanced phone? Maybe after 3g, right now its doing very bad there. Asia's most advanced phone? Well thats just funny.

Clearly these are the two bridges... OS X Leopard and OS X iPhone. I am thinking that .Mac will evolve into me.com and mobileme.com and there will be some sort of juggling of data to present and manage data appropriately for each platform in .Mac's backend.

Obviously the rumors about .Mac are right. Something big about the new .Mac and it's integration of the iPhone and OS X is coming.

Look at the graphic on the wall. On the left, we have Leopard's purple color scheme. On the right of the computer, we have .Mac's blue color scheme. And surrounding both the Mac and the iPhone, we have applications. It all makes sense, think about it.

It also makes you think that the new service will have "OS X" somewhere in it, either officially or unofficially. Even if it doesn't, they will place OS X next to it, to reinforce the tight integration of the two other aspects of the relationship.

Apple has needed a serious competitor to Microsoft's Office paradigm. With iWork completely up to spec, all that's left for Apple to convince people are Outlook and Exchange alternatives.

Edit: Under the banner you can see "The world's most advanced ..." so obviously the new .Mac replacement will be the world's most advanced.

Well, I'm giddy as a school girl... :D

Couple of FYIs that apparently can't be overstated:
1) Macrumors.com is an Apple news/rumor/follow Steve's every move/let those of us who can't be at WWDC know what's going on site. If you are going to complain about what the founder/owner puts on the front page, then please go start your own site because it doesn't make sense to come to an Apple site and complain about Apple related articles. Thank you if you made it this far. :o

2) The World Wide Developers Conference is for (wait for it....) developers!!!!! It is not a hardware forum. Thus, while we will more than likely be hearing about hardware related items, the main focus is development of software for all Apple platforms (which now includes the iPhone in case you missed it).

I kind of agree... But, bear with me: if a multitude of features was any indication of something being "world's best", MS Word would be the world's best word processor...

I know this is not the perfect example and, although I try not to, I am sounding like an Apple fanboy (which I most definitely happen to be). But I think you get the point...

Being the "world's best" or "world's most advanced" can mean a lot of things, including:

1. Being truly revolutionary or innovative;
2. Being truly usable, contrary to some of the most featureful gadgets on the market;
3. Being cooler than any other gadget on the market;
4. All of above.

Certainly, the iPhone fits into some, if not all, of the alternatives above.

With iWork completely up to spec, all that's left for Apple to convince people are Outlook and Exchange alternatives.erm, uh, iWork is not "completely up to spec." Don't get me wrong, I love iWork, but it cannot yet compete with M$ Orifice. Keynote blows Powerpoint out of the water, and Pages is a joy to use compared to Word, but Numbers...well, I prefer to use Numbers, but it is feature-poor compared to Excel, which is arguably the most important of the Orifice apps. Until Numbers can blow Excel out of the water (give it two years), iWork can't supplant Orifice.

Apple's designers don't make mistakes. Every single little thing, especially color scheme, has a role. Think about the default Leopard desktop; that uses only Leopard theme colors. So did the Tiger desktop.

This is no mistake. I rarely leap to conclusions about these things, but I feel very confident in my, well, guess I suppose.

Personally I think the new .Mac will either be a helluva lot cheaper or free with OS X and/or iPhones.

Exactly, but WWDC has been a launch platform for some major hardware announcements including the G5 processor and the Power Mac G5. While we will hear about a 3G iPhone, I doubt it will be announced the same day.

I agree, but my point was that the main banners and things are going to be software/development related and people shouldn't freak out about it. :D

When you start deciphering color schemes, you know you're reading WAY too much into it.

With any other company I would agree with you. But with Apple, and to a designer like myself, color scheme is key to many aspects of your work.

My question is that this seems to indicate that the iPhone OS is officially called OS X iPhone. However, what about the iPod Touch; it runs the same OS.

I would think they would name it something else to include the Touch plus any other "touch" hardware.

Why not "OS X Touch" and "OS X Leopard"?

I think this picture is stretched. Look at the width (or height in this picture) of the Iphone, and look at the icons on the wall, they are not square. The rim on the macbook air is taller also, making me think that this picture was taken by a crappy camera or phone camera, that distorted the aspect of the photo.

Either way, if they are going to release a new product, it will not be on the entrance banner for WWDC08, it will be a surprise in Jobs' keynote.

It was never called either, it was always called Mac OS X. The iPhone OS never had a name until now though (I'm pretty sure).

Yes, but what I was saying is that now it appears to be simply "OS X". No "Mac" in the name.

This could imply that OS X will be employed beyond the Mac.

(But if they're going that route on naming conventions, why is the other called "OSX iPhone" if it's not just on the iPhone...)

If you really want to fan the flames of the rumor mill, don't you think it's suspicious that the iPhone blocks out the name of the machine it's in front of?
On a more serious note, whilst the bottom of the Bezel is wider than the sides on the Air, there is a much more glaring difference, and that it the thickness of the front edge of the machine. I'm sat typing this on my MBA, and there is no way the front edge is anywhere near as wide as that on the poster. Added to that is the dimensions of the IR sensor on the right hand front edge: On the MBA it's much thinner, wider and further to the left than the one on the photo.

I've attached a couple of images to illustrate what I mean:
The first one is from the poster, the second one is an MBA from Apple's site. It could be perspective, but there's quite a difference...

Anybody else notice this?

If you look at the MBA and the iPhone they are both stretched vertically making them thicker in the banner. When you stretch the vertical sides stay the same width but the horizontal bezel gets thicker.

I personally think it is perspective causing it. Else, the MBA is not much wider than the iPhone laying down which would mean a UMPC MBA, that I would knock old women down a flight of stairs for.

Maybe the REAL new iPhone is on a banner BEHIND that banner, and during the keynote, the FAKE banner will drop?

It's the Leopard color and the Leopard Server color.

Oh, so the thinner bezel is the Leopard colour, and the thicker one is the Server colour? I'm assuming then, that the odd size of the iPhone is actually the new "Snow Leopard" colour?

Apple is not going to have 4 notebook computers. Now the only thing it could possibly be (other than a macbook air) is a new design of an existing notebook. However, the fact that it looks virtually exactly like a macbook Air and is in the lobby in plain sight 3 days before the keynote I'm going to go out on a limb and say.....it is a Macbook Hydrogen. Just to tease those people craving for a new Newton, I would say: if OS X iPhone is now a platform, wouldn't that imply that there'll be more diverse hardware products for it?

I mean to ask: as it is -- one single model of a hardware product (iPhone), plus a software product (OS X for iPhone) --, would it constitute a real platform? I guess so, but...

Maybe the platform is gaining more hardware options next Monday, eh?Not to be too much of a downer, but it could also indicate the exact opposite or anything in between.

If there was going to be a Newton, it would make more sense to brand the new "branch" of OS X "OS X Mobile" (or similar) than "OS X iPhone." The later implies that it will run on iPhones only.

Conversely, it's also more likely, by the same logic, that if there is a Newton it will be using "OS X Leopard." Because a tablet is not a telephone, it's closer to being a "Mac," and we already know that multi-touch is going into both "branches" of the OS.

Maybe I am extremely pessimistic, but I think its slightly obvious that the banner is distorted, for whatever reason. The iPhone looks fatter (wider), and the screen on the Air is messed up because everything seems to be stretched vertically. Even, the icons appear stretched just enough to make them look a little off...

Please don't tell me you guys really think that Apple, a super secretive company by any standard, is going to put up uncovered banners of a new product before its announced in plain enough view that a photographer can get good pictures of it... Please, for the love of The Steve tell me you don't really think that...

But of course you are wrong because people don't want to believe it.

Thurdsay: Mysterious boxes clog warehouses worldwide, over 181 sea containers by one momentary count.

Monday: Apple announces a product.

Tuesday: Over a half million products ordered worldwide.
Over 100,000 products ship to "special" customers identified by an Apple developed data mining application, but who order through "normal channels".
Apple servers "jam" twice during the day. The "cloud" is blamed. The interpipes are jammed.

Wednesday: over 200,000 products ship. Over 50,000 units are sold at Apple and AT&T stores. More ordered.

Thursday: over 400,000 products ship today as well. More ordered. Over 50,000 units are sold at Apple and AT&T stores.

Friday: Putin is seen in Russia with an iPhone.

The weird thing is... why call it OS X iPhone if it also goes on the iPod touch? lol

iPod touch isn't an iPhone... and I doubt they'll have a separate name and call it OS X iPod touch.

Maybe it is the name, though. Or maybe they just mean OS X on the iPhone and the new name is yet to be announced.... maybe... lol

These posts are getting ridiculous. I do hope for a new mac maybe something like a tablet and a revamped macbook and macbook pro line. Also there is without a doubt that the new iphone will be shown at the wwdc. There are none left anywhere. Apple has to be releasing a new one.

But did anyone notice that the iphone still has at&t as the carrier. I guess that att will be the only carrier in the US. This means that i leaning toward att not subsidizing the iphone but hopefully they will.

What does advanced mean?

If it means the number of features, then yes, the Japanese phones have many more than the iPhone currently has. I am sure that iPhone 2 will close that gap a little at least.

However, when it comes to ease of use the iPhone is way ahead of many competing phones -- especially the Japanese ones in which many of them have a terrible interface system. In this regard, the iPhone is way more advanced than most other Japanese phones today, IMHO.

200+ posts and we still struggle with perspective. IS THIS NOT THE EXACT SAME TYPE OF PICTURE WE ORIGINALLY SAW WHEN WWDC '08 WAS ANNOUNCED?

http://www.melamorsicata.it/mela/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/iphone-wwdc-08.jpg

you tell me that this picture and the banner picture are different, I know, the iPhone isn't centered, but the iphone with a MACBOOK AIR behind it is pretty obvious. If this isn't enough evidence, oh well, rumors make people loose touch of reality around here, myself included, I just knew I have seen that photo before.

Lets get real here people! Apple is not going to display a picture of a new product 3 days before the event for everyone to see!

Its a GRAPHIC of the Macbook Air. It is not going to look like a perfect photograph.

If the picture was it then that means the new iPhone is going to be about the size of a person.

I Second that!

it's about time we start calming down it really IS just a graphic rendering of the MacBook Air. It's not 100% exact!

But we'll get something soon... I just hope we'll be blown away...

I have a good feeling that most of the people posting here are unemployed students.

I take offense to that  i USED to be an unemployed, penniless, filthy student ... and it was Apple that made me penniless!

I think Macrumors needs to be rebranded as iPhonerumors.com.

Sarcasm aside, should be interesting what comes of this, I hope the keynote talks about some stuff other then iPhone.

A big 10-4--)));)

Has there been any other Apple events where the products on the banners were different then the products introduced during the keynote speech? The iphone pictured in the banner looks exactly like the current version and there is no front facing camera.

Lets all calm down.

Here is the banner with perspective removed. It is an MBA

Well played! Thank you.

When you start deciphering color schemes, you know you're reading WAY too much into it.

Is it just me or is the iPhone in front of the Air waaaay to big to be an iPhone? Looks like a 7" display to me. Maybe it's just an optical illusion.

shut up. its a NORMAL iPhone and its a NORMAL MBA. Apple isn't stupid enough to give anything away in a FREAKING BANNER.

Pretty.

I'll re-phrase. When you start to decipher color schemes of a badly photographed banner ad in bad lighting from across a room at an off-angle for meaning of new product releases then you're really reading into things.

That's what I love about the MacRumors bunch; we're all good-natured... except for the people who complain when "their" line isn't updated when there isn't a CPU to upgrade to.:p

:p Btw newton 2.0 on Monday. :apple:

The banners are featuring the most mobile and connected of Apples products.

This is a developers conference. It will be focused on the Mobile platforms for the developers.

The iPhone Fund has recently just started giving out funds for development. Most developers are gonna be focused on this anyway, its where the MAJOR cash is.

Apple also needs to move iPhone along in development for business use in order to keep its lead in the smartphone/mobile computing market.

This one is all about mobile. Hence no iMac or MacPros on banners
This could also explain the lack of "Mac" before OS X, OS X is no longer soley Mac Centric

I can't believe the hype starters are trying to prove that there is a new MB or something on the banner.

The same posts screaming about how the conference was a disappointment and no new toys were announced and it was all about the iPhone and there wasn't even an iPhone 3G.

At the end of the keynote all of their faces will look like this:

Unless of course your on a rumor site's discussion board.

Hell look at all the "photos" of Bigfoot etc. they have TV shows dedicated to them.
