BTW everyone- have you guys noticed the limited gamma that a web jpeg has? i find it really dissapointing when I get my colors just right in Photoshop, with Adobe RGB (1998), and I save for web and my saturation drops a ton.
Any tricks to keep the saturation high, besides pumping it way up before export to jpeg?

don't use embedded profiles unless your doing volume production work.
no matter what you do the gamma will ***** it right in the arse. i design on my TiPB and it looks so freakin' dark on my work PC...it drives me nuts. but it's cool when i make what i think is a mediocre image on the PC and on my mac it looks amazing :)
make it for you..then just tell everyone what you are using (be it: profiles, LCD/CRT, gamma, media (if its intended for print), etc.). otherwise it will dive ewe mad.
peace.

I agree it's very hard to actually determine the intelligence difference between the species. The one thing I did come across for sure when I was researching it was everyone agree that there was too little research being done on birds.
That said some of the stuff I read about Ravens was absolutely amazing. The are quite capable of have a large vocabulary just like a parrot that's nothing new really. What surpised me was there handle on numbers. They are quite adept and recognising the number of people in a group and counting number of animals and other things. Not in the sense of communicating those numbers but in the sense of survival. One thing I read about was talking about using a bird blind and most birds you can fool into thinking you are gone from the blind so they come back to there nest, not Ravens. With most birds you take more then one person into the blind with you and then have them leave. The birds assume that threat is gone and come back to there nest. Ravens on the other hand know how many people went in. If 5 people went in they will wait until 5 people leave. In one situation they were able to fool a pair of Ravens by having a class room of kids go into the blind with them and having them leave. Apparently as with humans counting large numbers quickly can be tricky.
There were several other things that surprised me though including Ravens are the only known bird to actually make up games and play them in a group. They also hunt in packs and set traps for hawks. They will also communicate with other Ravens to let them know of a food source. I'm not talking about flying to them and then flying back to show them where the food is but actually communicating precisely where the food is with a language.
I'm glad I read about this there's some pretty good stuff it might even deserve a thread of it's own.

i agree with ya completely, however what chose me to choose number 3 was that in number 1 there is an extremely unflattering blurry/smudged nose effect on the little boy in the bottom left ; makes it look like he has an oddly shaped and flattened nose. the rest are all good imo, but the 3rd just does it for me...

well, in 3 the kids have thier heads down. it seems like they are bored and tired of being at school. in 1 they are interacting much more acively, the way we like to think kids act at school.

exactly -- which is why no. 3 is unconventional. one it was taken at the kid's perspective. and two it shows what kids are often really thinking! the others are typical of a classroom setting, but for me no. 3 is the best --although all of em have something going for them.

I agree No. 3. It's the angle of the shot it shows the childrens perspective but also shows the children.
I like No. 1 because it does show the activity of a class room. Even knowing what you considered a fault in the photo I look right at the kids nose and I don't see it as a problem. It just looks blurred like the rest of the photo, at least at this small size.

you should post some shots of your parents' congo.
I agree...my cockatoo lifts it's wing so that you'll pet under it....it will actually continue to lift it so you keep doing it an never leave it...it also makes a loud, long beeping noise to get you to come back so it'll stop :)....it really seems to me that they enjoy it...I do like to leave them out all the time....it used to be practically free in the house except it now lives in the garage because cockatoos have a lot of powder that keeps them from getting wet among other things...it's somewhat my bird but my grandfather takes care of her mostly...I'll probably take her when I move out...she'll probably out live me :D...I also read somewhere that cockatoo's can remember people they've seen only once for their entire lifetime...and it's not vague...they remember the person exactly as they were...kinda makes people immortal to cockatoos I guess...

Actually it was a Crow which is also quite intelligent but a big step below the Raven.
As for intelligence I'm going to mix this up a bit. My pet rabbit knows it's bed time when I turn off the TV at night and goes and gets in his cage on his own.

Hi MacBandit,
Unfortunately no I did not know about the caves. But it gives me a good excuse to come back to Yosemite. ( Got the airmiles to visit back to SF).
I'd like to return sometime and stay over and explore. When I visited it was on a Bus trip from SF so I only had around 3 hours in the park.
I almost missed the bus back as I was really enjoying the countryside and geography. I work in Computing but my real love is Geography. Give me a camera and a park and I'm happy :)
Do you have any pictures of the caves / boulders as I'd love to see them.
As I came in April the snow was just starting to melt, so the river was flowing quite a bit. It's an amazing place.
I'm hoping to get a job back in North America sometime soon, if only so that I have the chance to visit National Parks more often :)

Unfortunately I do not have any photos of the caves. I was about 14 when I was there last and photography wasn't high on my list of things to do. Besides the place is so amazing it's easy to forget to take photos. It is definitely one of the most amazing places in the US.
The caves aren't very big. They're basically just large crawls spaces under the large piles of boulders. They're well sealed up from the top though with dirt and rock so they are definitely a very dark cavern.

For the money you can't beat the Digital Rebel the D100 and 10D are both at least $400 more.

OK, for one, the d100 is way too big in my hands. I am a big guy and I have big hands, but holding the d100 was just was too awkward. The digital rebel feels like it was designed with a humanly (proportioned) hand in mind ;)
besides, the digital rebel is 500 dollars cheaper, which will give me money to spend on a decent lense/tripod. Not to mention ya gotta buy a big memory card with a 6mp cam.
The d100 is nice but it aint for everybody...it is also more camera than I realistically need at this "skill" level.

Those are all excellent points. For one thing the Digital Rebel is basically a Cannon 10D with a plastic body and a some software limitations. Beyond that it's the exact same camera. Yes, some of the features limited by software would have been nice but get real you're paying $500 less for basically the same camera. Also from what I've read the Digital Rebel doesn't have the focusing problems that some of the 10Ds apparently have.

Dec 3, 2003, 01:48 AM
I think what it will come down to is that ultimately it all has to do with the lenses. get the best body ya can, and get really good lenses at the time...
digital rebel +50mm prime, some kind of decent telephoto range lense, tripod, and big fatty cf card=much more than i have right now...

I agree the lenses make the camera. You're much better off with a slightly cheaper but every bit as capable camera if you can afford a lot more lenses then you are with the more expensive camera and no lenses.

That's excellent for not having a tripod. What's that about a 1 sec exposure?
A caught a little bit of irony in your photo. The fact that the place is called Hillsboro when the tallest land formation for a hundred miles is an overpass.:)

Yeah I always found that funny...that's the county, and why it's put on the courthouse sign in downtown tampa I'll never know...actually it's Hillsborough....maybe it's because the hills burrowed....I have no idea (or humor sometimes :))...anyway it was around 1-2 seconds...I didn't set a delay but it was dark enough and the cars and stuff was moving fast enough that I was banking on 50 ISO making the shutter speed longer....for some reason my S400 will lengthen the time if it's not specifically set, even in manual mode, if there's not enoug light...

Definitely you go to get close and take a photo from ground level looking up against the sky. It might even work with a slight tilt to the camera.

Honestly, this video didn't impress me much. I've read several studies that tend to debunk the idea that tool making and using are good indicators of what we would consider intelligence. The ability to have abstract thought is a much better (though much harder to measure) indicator of intelligence. In that area, I believe that Grays are the only birds that have passed the test fully.

True, but that represents a different kind of intelligence. According to Piaget (I believe it was piaget) humans go through an evolution from this sort of thinking towards abstract thought...and yes I agree, I think Greys seem to be the smartest.

As an interesting note, given the earlier discussion of handheld vs. tripod, this one was taken with a 300mm lens. I never expected it to come out, as it wasn't bright enough out, so my shutter speed was only about 1/60 s. Beyond anything I could have hoped for, my hand held steady for the shot. So, while it may not be the best way to do it, it is possible to do...

Would making up games with a clear goal be considered abstract though?
Also would you consider the ability to communicate a location by communication alone not by physically showing the bird intelligence?
What about having a grasp for numbers? This is something that even Chimps and Gorillas have a hard time with.
Also just because the Greys have passed doesn't mean that Ravens or Black birds have even been tested. They're is definitely a lack of research when it comes to bird intelligence.

Everyone has been complaining trying to get there photos down to a certain size.
Well I never have any problems. I drop the size down to 800x600 using GraphicConverter and then save it out as a Jpeg from GraphicConverter using usually no less than a 95% quality setting in the Jpeg options box.
I have used Photoshop and Preview and other programs in the past and for some reason none of them will save as small and retain as much quality as GraphicConverter.

I think, from what I recall, the answer to this is no. You can find games being played by some of the most simple animals which few people would argue have true intelligence.
Also would you consider the ability to communicate a location by communication alone not by physically showing the bird intelligence?
No. By this measure then bees are pretty smart creatures...
What about having a grasp for numbers? This is something that even Chimps and Gorillas have a hard time with.
This could indicate abstract thought, but not necessarily. It depends on how it's implemented.
Also just because the Greys have passed doesn't mean that Ravens or Black birds have even been tested. They're is definitely a lack of research when it comes to bird intelligence.
Actually, the studies I've read have covered an extensive breadth of critters. If memory serve, it included seals, monkeys (of various kinds), domesticated animals (cats, dogs, pigs), wild tool users (otters, squirrels), and birds of various kinds (including several kinds of parrots as well as some crows or ravens - I don't remember which).
Now, as I said before, it's by no means easy to measure abstract thought. Parrot's ability to use human languages clearly makes this much easier. However, there were some really clever means devised to gain channels of communication with the other animals.
Also, it's important to note that there are different kinds of intelligence. The intelligence of abstract thought is simply what has been deemed to be most representative of human intelligence, or so I've read. I don't dispute the fact that crows and ravens are very smart birds, I'm just questioning that the nature of that intelligence.
Now, to keep this a little on topic (but with a nod to the feathered nature of this side discussion...), here's a few more photos:

Something else to make sure to do in GraphicConverter is to make sure you have all options for icons turned off including resources.
Custom icons can nearly double a 150KB image to 300KB or more.

From what I have read Ravens are every bit as capable at mastering human languages as Parrots. Also I think complex problem solving the type Ravens and some Crows are capable of shows a high degree of abstract though. They can do this without being shown how to. An obstacle can be set up and they can acquire the necessary tools and can construct the necessary tools on there own in order to reach a goal.
The level of communication I was referring to with the Ravens is nothing like that of bees. Bees use scent trails much like ants do. Ravens can communicate with there flock or family specifically where a food source is without showing them where it is and without the flock having ever been there.
Also the games they make up are not always the same they are quite complex and can be put on the same level as human sports with rules and boundaries.

As a final thought (meaning that this unrelated thread seems to me to have gone on long enough, and I'm not going to further it any more, but you can feel free to have the last word ;) ), tool use doesn't relate to the ability to think abstractly. Abstract thought is the ability to understand that both a stick and a wall are made of wood, in other words, the understanding of the abstraction of what wood is.
As to bees, they may use scent trails, but it has also been well documented that there is a 'dance' that communicates the location of food, even if the scent trail has been dissipated. So, here again, this type of communication doesn't strike me as a real indication of intelligence. (However, it doesn't indicate a lack of intelligence, either.)
As I don't know anything about the games that crows or ravens play, I can't really comment much on these.
All in all, I think that intelligence is a very difficult thing to measure. I also think that a lot of animals are a lot more intelligent than most people give them credit for, especially birds.

Joe,
maybe you recall when Mike got into 2 weeks ago's weekly assignment, and I did not, despite getting an immense amount of positive feedback on the photo. i was pretty upset and I tried to take it out by criticizing the other photographer's work. Now I didnt get into that assignment's finalist position, but I did for this weeks! I will probably finish in 3rd place and I am happy about that. I am competing with photographers with years more experience, much nicer cameras and lenses, and access to stuff I do not.
To be honest, I think I take some decent pix with this pos sony. I think it is all about the perspective of how you look at it; I took my time, planned my shot [for last weeks assignment] out, and got what I was wanting. It was selected as a finalist and I'll probably end up in 3rd amongst people much more talented than myself.
Keep trying joe -- your week/month will come :)
