I couldn't tell you if they were Model T's or Model A's. You are right, that photo looks like it is from the same area where I shot my photo. There is something about old, over-grown autos that make for great photo ops!

Here is a photo I took in Bandon, OR a few years ago. It just seemed to have a bit of an eerie feeling to it. :)

Yeah, it is in my gallery somewhere. I am working on getting that organized, since it is such a mess at the moment!

The waterfall is named Upper Proxy Falls on the Old McKenzie Highway here in Oregon. I have been there 3 times now, I think it is. love my digital.

i went to barcelona and shot 300 digital and 500+ film. after scanning the 35mm film (long week of long days doing that) with a nikon film scanner, the 4mp digital look as good, if not better.

35mm/film will still have its place, but it it slowly and surely dieing. give it a few more years and we will have better resolution with a digital device than any film we can afford to use. plus, with sigma's (right?) new ccd, or other innovations, pictures will be razor sharp.

Foveon X3 (http://www.foveon.com/) CCDs, being used in Sigma cameras.

I went digital for the usual reasons (immediate shot feedback, development costs, convenience) and I've found it to be a great way for people who want to learn more about photography to practice their skills without waste and waiting.

Nope. Still using regular slides. For nature pictures you simply get the very best experience with slides. They are unbeatable in terms of quality, brilliance, colors.

I've been digital for about about 15 months now. I started out with a Nikon N65, and grew tired of negs & scans & such after a few months. I then moved to a Minolta Dimage 7i, which I learned a TON from. After a little over a year with that, I moved on to my current camera, my Nikon D100.

It's actually a Technics 1200, one of the more wellknown turntables that DJ's use. It's not mine either, just a friends. This particular shot was also the first shot I ever took with the Nikon N65 I once owned. ;)

neut's post made me think of this shot. unfortunately, it is just of my cramped fraternity room glass wear and stereo amp, but the combination of a flash and a 5 second exposure in a dark room is pretty cool with a second light source. might try this sometime with a better execution.

i shoot with a Sony 505v (http://www.steves-digicams.com/f505v.html)...usually handheld.

i shoot very chaotically but i know what i am shooting when i point my camera (be it: lighting, mood, speed). since this a LCD only camera...i am forced to shoot by feeling. my two semesters of b&w photo at the university come in handy too ;).

i still miss my manual...but i hate developing the film...unless i can use salt and crumple the film :) but that's too much fun.

You have a very legitimate question about the truck...to be honest, my father owns a trucking company up near Seattle, WA. :)

I think your shot is great, there is something about roads that I like, especially in black and white. I have one in my gallery that I took while pretty much laying on the middle of a desert road in Nevada. It is all part of the adventure and fun of photography. :)

I love the color of the water in that shot. It is amazing the difference a few minerals can make in the color of water.

I think I am finally getting everything worked out to come in around 100k for my files, so it doesn't bother me as much anymore. :)

This shot was taken in the middle of the Nevada desert...

Actually that was a post production pic, but I edited it to look mostly like the water...it's probably a little darker than the original water...how are you getting them in 100k or so and at the size you're posting? I can't do it unless I drop the quality way down, on some images, where there is a high saturation...I don't feel like optimizing it...maybe I should...also it seems that my B&W stuff, even when converted to grayscale, is way too large for the amount of colors in it...I like this pic, interesting rock...

This one is better, methinks, than the other one...the perspective is AMAZING! I love the bushes in the front and the rock on the left...great composition...the sky is clear and everything...beautiful, simply beautiful man, good job...I'm interested in what it'd look like in B&W as well as desert shots usually lend themselves to it pretty well, not that I think it would be any better just different.....great shot!

I do the following to get the 100k...

1. Open in PhotoShop
2. Change image size to 72dpi
3. Change image to max 640x480
4. Use the 'Save for Web' option
5. Adjust JPG percentage until it works.

I'm sure there is a much quicker and easier way, but this seems to work well for me. If I was smart, I would just set up an action for numbers 2 and 3! :p

I don't know why it looks distorted, I didn't notice until you said something! I was just crouching down in front of the bush, until I found what looked to be right in the viewfinder. I believe I was shooting with a Canon Rebel G at the time, with the standard 28-80 zoom.

Macro easier handheld?

Obviously you're not doing macro correctly!

If you were, you'd be using, say, a 90-180mm lens ( I love my Sigma 105mm macro) and when you have that long of a lens plus 1:1 magnification, it's almost IMPOSSIBLE to handhold it without the lens shaking around and you being unable to control it.

Add that to any DOF tricks, and handholind macro will result in areas out of focus that you don't want out of focus, and overall, your photos will exhibit camera shake (anything THAT close, at 1:1 with a long lens is gonna result in a shutter speed less that what you can safely hand hold).

Using a flash can help a little bit... but unless you're using a nice ring flash built for macros, you're gonna end up with some shadow from the lens.

Gotta watch your info there Zync. I use a tripod for 90% of my shots, and for 100% of the macro work I do. you just HAVE to.

It's good technique and good habit.

Sorry to slightly disagree. better to use longer lenses IMHO. A 90-105 is pretty good. it get you "in tight" with the object but allows your lens to not cast shadows on the subject.

And as you know, up close at 105 (157mm on the d100) you'd need a shutter speed of 150 or so to handhold and keep it sharp and at 1:1 magnification, that goes to about 300 for your shutter speed.

No way are you getting a shutter speed like that if you're shooting ISO 100 or 200 film. :)

I hear u moxie, but I'm talking more in terms of my own experiences. Currently, my only macro capable lens is a 70-300. I can only shoot macro at 200-300, which we both know is much more with the 35mm conversion.

Oregon is littered with mining equipment. Especially further south towards Grants Pass. The reason is mining claims are free and anyone can make one on public lands. You just have to work the claim to keep it.

Well technically Macro-photography is the close up photography of objects that can be seen with the naked eye.

Micro-photography is that of taking photos of objects not visible to the naked eye.

I haven't seen any objects here yet that had detail that was hidden from the naked eye of someone with normal vision.

She was a funny one.

they're very, very aggressive birds, though i find that they don't bite hard unless you're afraid of them, which i never have been. quakers are also illegal in 5 states because they're so damned noisy. when they get to squawking, it's quite a show, and it's not like listening to the coo of a dove or the whistles of a parakeet. it's like a long, drawn out crow caw, and it's often a good bit louder. they have a sound that distinctly reminds me of a wrathful, slightly masculine mother.

mine liked me pretty well, though. she was a fun bird. I was one of the few people she didn't attack outright, though.

another interesting fact about them is that they are one of the best talkers in the parrot world by most accounts. only African Grays surpass them in that aptitude, and African Grays, the congo type at least, can get to be smarter than most kindergarteners...

I find they bite less hard the older they get, or the more you talk to them before you pet them...it's let me hold it a few times before without attacking but only when I talked to him and he replied...they also won't bite if they're in danger, you can hold him while in the pool if his feet are in the water...he's really strange and pretty smart, but I think my cockatoo is smarter, I mean she can shake hands and get on your hand if you tell her to...though the quaker tells you thank you before you give it food...I don't know...maybe they're both pretty smart...I always heard Minah birds were the best talkers, but Tico there is pretty good at it...the cockatoo can be when she wants...like when she says hello it sounds like a real person...actually it sounds like her previous owner (the wife of a former bucs player)....Coty, the cockatoo, came from Hawaii and grew up with pigs which she used to chase around...she can squeal like a pig, beep like a house alarm, and do many other things...pet birds are some of the funniest creatures you'll ever see, and they're really intelligent...

afaik, african greys are the smartest. my parentsd have one, and it is definitely very smart. it will sometimes say goodbye to me when i am putting on a jacket or picking up my keys. when the phone rings it will call out my siblings and my names and we have to think for a second about who actually is yelling. not to mention it has the phone ring down so well, the onloy way we can tell it is her is because she has not figured out the correct spacing between rings. she will also recite entire phone conversations from hello to goodbye.

amazing animals, birds. i definitely do not think they should be kept in captivity. if i could, i would release my parent's congo grey, but it would probably not know how to survive. not to stray too far off topic, but i disagree about captivity. i think it's neat to keep african grays in captivity--not in puny torturous cages, but in spacious cages and in such a way that they get out a lot. parrots are a lot of fun to interact with, and having seen more than my share of cockatoos, macaws, and african grays, i think they often enjoy it as much as us humans do. ah well.

you should post some shots of your parents' congo.

i see what you mean, but birds are such "wild" animals. they have wings, and even the little flying matilda, my p's congo does, it does not make up for the fact that in her natural state, she would be flying around free, all day long. matilda has a huge cage that 6 people would easily fit it, but i still feel bad she spends the majority of her time in such a little space. i think birds should be free to fly as they are ment to.

and to staY on topic:

I did some research and I'm pretty positive I am correct. The Raven is the smartest bird species in the world. There are specific African Greys deemed the most intelligent birds period but not as a species. Also the Raven and Crow are in the Genus Corvidae which is considered to contain the most intelligent bird families.

You have to watch the video of the crow linked to on this following page.

wow, that video gave me goosebumps too. that's incredible.

i dunno, i think that greys seem to have a different type of intelligence. it sounds like parrots are more adept at interactive human communication... i think determining just which one is more intelligent is subjective to the extreme.
