MacTalk.com.au posts (http://forums.mactalk.com.au/19/50612-whats-box-3g-iphone-lands-down-under.html) a photo of a box that was sent to Australian resellers yesterday. The boxes are sealed with a warning:SUBJECT TO TERMS OF NDA
DO NOT OPEN UNTIL TUESDAY JUNE 10TH, 2008June 10th is the day after the Worldwide Developers Conference keynote speech where Steve Jobs is expected to announce the 3G capable iPhone. MacTalk speculates that the box may actually contain a demo model of the 3G iPhone. Our source strongly believes that the package contains the much coveted 3G iPhone. Why is there only one and why is it here early though? Our source believes that the iPhone contained within is for promotional purposes, ie. after it's official unveiling at WWDC next week, the iPhone will go on display with a sign saying 'look how cool I am - you can buy me on this date'. That date still looks like it will be June 19, coinciding with the opening of the flagship Sydney Apple Store.
Vodafone (http://www.macrumors.com/2008/05/06/vodafone-to-deliver-iphone-in-australia-italy-and-other-countries/) and SingTel (http://www.macrumors.com/iphone/2008/05/12/singtel-announces-iphone-in-singapore-india-the-philippines-and-australia/) both announced that they would be bringing the iPhone to Australia later this year.

It's a photo of Steve Jobs giving corporate America the finger, to be displayed after he announces his resignation at WWDC.

YUCK! Are you serious, that thing has iPod Mini written all over it. Last thing I need is those sharp edges catching in my pocket while trying to pull it out to answer a call, just to have it catch and fall on the floor! Smooth lines, that's what we need. H3LL, leave it the same as it is now (ok, maybe thinner:)), but still the 1st gen is still the sweetest looking form factor for a phone so far IMHO.
Do you feel lucky on Monday Punk...... DO YOU?:apple::apple:

Well, it doesn't say what time on Tuesday the 10th. Since Sydney, Australia is 17 hours ahead of Cupertino, it could be opened before Steve even starts his keynote on Monday morning, and not break the NDA.

Although I'd love to open the box, a picture like this could easily be faked. All I'd have to do is get a box, print off a fake address card, and take a pic and post it. I'll remain skeptical, but I'm still excited for the new iPhone!

The keynote is 10am (UTC-8) June 9 correct?
East coast Australia is UTC+10, so they can open the box 4 hours before the keynote starts!

Jun 6, 2008, 01:25 AM
If it's subject to an NDA, anyone opening the box would get their asses sued big time. Resellers have enough problems as it is. I don't know why Apple would do that, and not courier them on Monday night or something. Still, damn you MacRumors for posting this, I have just been pushed over the excitement threshold. Monday cannot come soon enough!
EDIT:

Ok, now that you said that, I am now doubting the validity of this box. This isn't Apple's style. Something is amiss here.

Now that I think about it a second time... What if there is like something in there that notifies the NDA if you opened it.... Or if its just a prank to get people all hyped up... Ide give it to someone I don't know to open it then I would say give it to me and there you go... Didn't break the NDA policy... :D

The boxes may contain iPhones for display purposes, but they won't contain just one iPhone per box. After all, it is hands-on interaction with iPhones that sells them. Stores won't just have one iPhone on display, they will have a dozen, just none that you can buy.
Of course, customers will complain, saying, "What do you mean, you don't have any in stock yet - there are a whole bunch of them right there!"

ITS A FAKE!!!! Apple isn't that stupid... Why would they send a box that says don't open till June 10,2008 to someone? Thats like wrong.. and as I know Apple they keep their stuff top secret till after the keynote. I doubt thats a real Apple box. Its probably just a fake to get us all hyped and excited and wanting to rip our hair out to know what's in there, and if they did send it... WHY WOULD U TAKE A PIC... DER DER. Apple knows who they sent it to, and they will sue the crap outa this person. If this person wants to be a smart @.. with Apple I dare him to open that box.

Unless your the manager you wouldn't get away with it as everyone else would've seen the box too by now, and they'd know you'd opened it if you did.
Besides, it's likely fake and I'm sure all will be revealed in a few hours time after a major frenzy has been worked up. Maybe someone will send fake take-down notices again.

I'm sure somewhere, someone has already opened the box and seen what's inside. Unfortunately, they probably won't post any pics for fear of losing their reseller status. Of course, as long as they keep matters to themselves, I doubt that Apple has any real way of knowing who has broken the NDA.
Of course, if pics were posted, is it possible to figure out which reseller was the one who did it?

I guess you'd have to go to two separate resellers and compare the materials, if they're the same, and you didn't take the photos with your shops logo visible in them, then Apple wouldn't know.
If someone did post photos and Apple responded with take-down notices then you'd know for sure it was real, if they didn't, you'd know it's fake.

Well... The only way they can find out who opened it is if they know the amount they sent and if the person turns the device on... Once the device is turned on it is auto registered on a tower and sends a signal to Apple.. So yea. Unless its just a display model i doubt its a real one.

This is fake.
A dispatch department places shipping labels on the side of boxes.
This shouldn't even be posted, as it is utter nonsense.
Anyone working in dispatch that places a label on the top or bottom of a box is in serious trouble, the printing/shipping company can lose a client by shipping boxes like this.

IT'S FAKE. The 2 lines of text at the bottom of the label do not follow the curve of the top of the box or the bottom of the label.
If you go to the large picture at the site, take a look at the bottom center of the white label. It's blurred. Look at the text inside the round stamp. The text nearest the edge of the label is blurred while the surrounding text is clear.

I mean come on, if you're gonna photoshop it, at LEAST use a real box with a real label instead of photoshopping the label to the bottom of the box of all places. An anecdote. Intel used to provide roadmaps of new processors to their largest resellers (Dell, HP, Gateway, Toshiba, etc). When I was in a position to see them, it was when companies like Gateway were still top 5. I didn't work for them, but it gives you an era.
Intel would have different names for certain products on the roadmaps provided to the different vendors. This way, when they leaked on to the net, Intel knew exactly who did it. That company would then have supply issues as every one of their competitors would have their orders filled first, etc.
In this case, losing the ability to resell Apple products is far too scary a prospect for any company.

actually, when the place i work at receives material before its release date, they put THREE labels on it. one on the side with the standard UPS, USPS, FedEx, etc.. stuff on it... and one on the top, and one on the bottom (both of which have the "dont open until..." junk on em). kinda like a seal you know.

They wouldn't deliver on monday night because that's a public holiday here.

They won't work, u'd need to take one 4 weeks before bcs u'll know that the 2 weeks prior to the WWDC will not exist for you, so, u'll have the anxiety 4 weeks premature, to which you will need to take another pill 2 weeks prior to that... then at that time you will need more pills for the anxiety that you will get that you will miss almost 2 months of you life asleep soiling yourself with no one to wash you with a sponge (yes, there are side effects).

Is it really that hard to believe that apple just shipped them out to Australia? I mean, when else are they going to get them to Australia. I did my research and yes, it is in fact an actual holiday!(Imagine that). Since it is a holiday, there will be absolutely no mail delivery. So yes!, this box could actually be in fact an actual box full of the new generation of iphone. there is no other way to get them to australia except if steve jobs delivered them there by plane. Its common sense really.

Actually, in Australia this would be quite normal, as there are no apple stores to release the product; resellers are their only form of distribution, apart from online.
I would think that MacTalk AU has confirmed their credibility by having the multiple carriers scoop weeks ahead of any carrier announcement.

This COULD be real, as some of you say the stamp is blurred. It isn't do a degree, its just the image quality. We do have a holiday on Monday, the Queen's birthday. Plus the image has sticky-tape marks on it and paper folds, which if you photo-shopped it, you wouldn't really pay attention to. The box has also come from Shang Hai, which is a plausible destination, as it has not come from the US. The postage stamp/delivery company would be what is blacked out in the top right corner.

meh, it's like a 0.000...0001% chance there's an iPhone 2 there...
my main reason being.. since when did australia get apple products on the date of WWDC.. (okay maybe there'd be exceptions, i dunno)
but sorry if you all know, but australian networks wouldn't release the original iPhone 1 now would they?!? that would just be plain wrong.
we've heard rumours for years to see which is the carrier for the original iphone, and we still don't have it...

Lets just remind everyone that the guy who posted this image is the same guy who claimed that Apple would release the 3G iPhone in late June in Australia, with no single exclusive carrier, and to be sold via Apple resellers. This was weeks before anyone had even heard anything remotely official. At the time everyone was calling that a big fat rumour, and now look whats happened, two Australian operators announcing they'll carry the phone. Everyone seems to be in agreement that that info is accurate.
What reason would he have to lie about this? Everyone knows the 3G iPhone is coming, why wouldn't Apple start releasing info/advertising material to stores?
Just so you can see a larger version of the picture. I really don't think this looks photoshopped at all.

OK, if it's not photoshopped, then someone physically made it. The point is, their are no real shipping labels, it is frowned upon HEAVILY to put a label on the bottom of a box, it is too conspicuous with the Apple logo slapped on there, and Apple WOULD NEVER DO SOMETHING SO STUPID! Any time sensitive product comes with a warning like that, including movies and games. They have labels that will say something like "do not open/sell until (blank)." The companies that produce the product and ship it before the product is to go on sale have non-disclosure agreements with the retailers, and if the retailers breach that agreement, they could be sued, or lose the right to sell that company's product. It's not uncommon or stupid.

I remember a while ago there was a similar thing, where apple stores received packages with "DO NOT OPEN UNTIL <date>" on them. I just can't remember what it was about or if it turned out to be legitimate. Can anyone remember what that was and what happened with it?

Well I'm still anxious but mainly pissed off now. Apple isn't streaming the event live, and I'm in NZ, so even if they did I wouldn't be able to see it all before having to go to school, where Apple.com is blocked.
This blows. One time where I'm actually unhappy about being in a nuclear-free country.
Does anyone know how good that alternative online TV thing is?

This really has nothing to do with your post, but when I saw your location, I actually looked behind me. Then I smacked my head on the wall, then the dog woke up. And now I have to let her out and feed her. So thanks. Jerk. Ugh, woozy....
Haha, sorry. How comes there's a wall that close to you and your computer? Are you in some kind of super-tiny room? Hey, maybe I just saved your dog from a lifetime of loneliness, or something.
Back to the box... are there lots of them? If that's the only box, then either it's a display one (as I believe someone mentioned) or, you know, something else.

Not true - I've got a pile of boxes in this office and most of them have the labels on the top. Aside from the usual bunch of boxes from resellers the notable ones that are packed that way are the MSDN ones shipped direct from Microsoft.
I think it's done that way so you have to rip the label to open the box.

New Apple store (the first in Australia) opening on June 19, iPhone announced for multiple carriers...of course, being in Australia I'm automatically guessing Apple wanted to send the box to me and only me, they merely got the address on the label wrong.
Oh, and about the label supposedly having to be on the side...not necessarily. I'm another that can raise my hand at having received many packages with the label placed over the opening of the box (in fact, I cannot recall a time when that hasn't happened).

NB: I'm the other MacTalk Australia admin. :)
It's a fake people. Either photochopped or pasted together. The first thing I thought: WHERE'S the POSTAGE????
No stamp? No UPS label? No Fedex bill of duty? What gives. C'mon folks, this is just hysteria now taking over. Think. Think. Like Apple would ship a box that says do not open???? Some carrier getting $21.82 an hour really going to deliver a box like this and not just let it "fall off the truck"?
Not on the side in Australia for that size of box, send by signed courier. Actually, for that matter, I've rarely received packages, even from overseas, that had labels and con-notes on the side. It preferably goes on the top for Australian couriers. Yes, they are going to deliver it, because missing box = police investigation and fired driver (I used to work with couriers). Apple & the company that handles the movement of their stock probably requested confirmation for all the deliveries. Anyway, you can't see the sides of that box, have you noticed?
Uhh, yeah, because the photo is taken at an angle using an iPhone (ironically).
haha, I don't usually complain about fake pictures, but any high school kid with photoshop could have pulled this one off. I mean come on, if you're gonna photoshop it, at LEAST use a real box with a real label instead of photoshopping the label to the bottom of the box of all places. It looks like he tried to add a little bit of realism with an opaque factor of 85-90%ish? rofl.
It's only a couple more days guys and gals, no need for this nonsense.
It wasn't photoshopped (aside from the black boxes) just like Anthony (decryption) who runs MacTalk, along with myself, isn't going to utterly destroy MacTalk's reputation by making stuff up. You're entitled to think otherwise, though. Incidentally, the photo was taken a day before it was posted. There wasn't originally a plan to post a box as news. People seem to find boxes from Apple, shiny or brown, entertaining it seems.
As for nonsense, that's what 99% of the internet is. Yes, we don't really need pictures of brown boxes, but it's been a slow week, it's broken the monotony. Anyway, what would YOU do if a mate was receiving brown boxes under NDA a couple of days before WWDC?
NDA's are scary. Nobody would dare open it.
The recipient of the box absolutely refused to open it, even if it wasn't to be photographed. Apple would have hunted both them and us down if we had.
OK, I'm settling this. This is not real. Besides the fact it is a bad photoshop, Apple IS NOT STUPID, and WOULD NOT ship something like this before it is announced.
They do regularly. That's why an Apple store can open up the next day after WWDC or Macworld with new products. As someone in the know how scary Apple's NDA's are.
What reason would he have to lie about this? Everyone knows the 3G iPhone is coming, why wouldn't Apple start releasing info/advertising material to stores?
There are plenty of people who don't have the slightest comprehension of the logistics involved, the situation with Apple in Australia, the third parties involved and a bunch of other factors. That's normal though.
Thanks for the entertainment.

TO all those people indignantly insisting that only an idiot would post a photo of a box with the label on the bottom, who said it was on the bottom?
Looks like it's on the top to me.
And what's wrong with putting it on the top? I just got a bunch of stuff from Amazon in a similarly sized box - with the label on top. In fact every time I get something that sort of size the label is on top. It's the logical place to put it, especially if it's delicate, as the label can be read without tilting the box onto it's side or lifting it up to head height. Plus the label will be ripped when the box opened, providing absolute evidence of tampering.

Give me a break, they would not send a package that early to a reseller. I am aware that stores get product before hand (duh) in order to open stores. These things are done in the dead of night generally. There is still nothing here to suggest to me that it's real.

This happened with Halo 3 I think ... some people at Argos got into big trouble.

Although the envelope is very thin my sources confirm that the enveloppe actually contains the new version op the iPhone which is in fact much more slimmer then originally thought. I think (hope) that we'll all be pleasantly surprised with the new iPhone's design, Apple wouldn't screw something like this up, especially when it comes to design. Maybe those mock-up shells were made out of plastic for the case makers to mold from/measure, it doesn't necessarily mean that the final product will be produced out of the same material.

It's just a load of posters and banners for something called "Appdell". One poster shows what appears to be an iMac but relabled a "Winmac", with Vista loaded, and Mac OS X running in a window on the screenshot. Another, cryptically, says "Who says you can't get the best of both worlds? Say hello to Appdell", with a picture of Steve Jobs next to some guy I don't recognize (edit: I think it's Michael Dell.)
Hmmm, interesting: There's a packet of stickers here marked as something to put on all "existing" Mac models. The stickers say "Note: Appdell will continue to support Mac OS X on all compatible Mac models through 2012"
Another interesting poster: This one shows what looks like an iPhone (slightly different though, is it the new 3G perhaps?) but refers to it as "iPhone from iTunes". There's no Apple logo on it. I'm also pulling out a poster with a picture of what looks like an AppleTV, only it's billed as "iTunes TV".

Plus, I'm sure the only way you would really truly know if Apple shipped sensitive packages with the Apple logo on it or not is if you worked for them. Maybe it's the Mac tablet that is rumored to be released at WWDC. ;)

You missed the post above saying the 9th is a Public Holiday in Australia, so there is no mail service that day.
Plus, I'm sure the only way you would really truly know if Apple shipped sensitive packages with the Apple logo on it or not is if you worked for them. I doubt it, but if you do and you know first hand, then fine. Otherwise I wouldn't make such broad and definitive statements based on the fact that Apple is "secretive."
In the US, packages can be delivered on holidays (for extra fee).

I think it's a real box! But that's the only thing real, the box itself. :)

Wonderful. Not the case here.

Says it's not allowed to be opened...Doesn't say anything about using an X-ray machine! Just brake your leg, tape the box to your leg for 'support' then go to the hospital, as soon as you get your X-ray's done, grab them, and hop away like a mad man.

I can't believe some of you are actually thinking this is real.
That's the worst hoax attempt ever. There's more of a chance of an iphone being in the tissue box that was posted.

haha someone ALWAYS opens the box. Though they may wait until midnight of that day to do it, they still open it prematurely. I can see that happening, maybe we'll see some pics in the morning b4 wwdc or something?
I hope not. Despite the fact that I have giant ants in my pants (siafu to be exact), I honestly rather wait. I wanna see the whole keynote and slowly get insight on the future product(s) as I hang on to Steve's every word. It's the only way. It's the best way. Just looking at it in some box ruins the whole thing.

A person who works in an Apple Premium Reseller in the UK, said:
It's not the phone but just only all marketing related papers.
I used to work apple retail here in the states, and you're right. It's just flyers, posters, and employee t-shirts.

Open the damn box already :p
If its real, I seriously doubt a reseller would put its franchise and the livelihood of its employees on the line to satisfy the curiosity of a few Mac fans. We all know what happens when you steal Steve's thunder.
Brad Pitt's wife's head is inside the box.
And a greeting card from Kevin Spacey.

We X-rayed the box and found what was in it... it's Apple's greatest triumph to date - and it's BACK!
yes - it's the CUBE!

So if this package is sent to someone in Australia, we can get a sneak peek hours before the keynote, since its the whole time difference. No where does it state that it has to be opened on June 10 Pacific Time. ;)
There is a 50/50 possibility that this is BS. Seems the individual was excited that he put the label at the bottom of the box. :D

I say it's a fake. For one, you wouldn't write that message on the shipping label. Two, why would it just be on a simple paper print out. Apple would have probably printed it on a tape that wrapped and secured the box so that there wouldn't be any argument if that message wasn't on there.

Losing your status as an Apple Authorized reseller?
arn
Opening the box is not so bad as reporting that you did. Once you actually open the box, the temptation to open the iPhone box inside of that is large. Then the tempation to power on the iPhone is large. Then the iPhone reports its existence to the network, and, BOOM, bye bye AAR status.

I'm not supposed to say anything, but I will say that those boxes may be legit. I am a private Apple product tester (I've already seen the iPhone 3g first hand) and they occasionally send me newly released or announced products to check over for any last minute issues before they are released to the general public. I just got this box myself, I'm thinking it may be the final iPhone 3g, either that or Steve has something else up his sleeve for WWDC.
I attached hi-res shots of the box. (updated to remove barcodes)

This has got to be fake. First of all you have to SIGN a NDA to be covered under one. A Cell Phone RESELLER in AU does not have a NDA with Apple. These boxes would be popping up all over the place if this was ture. You could VERY easly open the box and leak the contents to the public becuase 100's of these boxes would have been shipped if it was real and no one would be able to figure out who opened their box.
Its a fake.
Is it so?

Dude that phone is fo fugly!!!
I dont think its the new iPhone. Look at the tape on it. It just seems like if it was the priced iPhone it would be protected with a lil more than clear cheap tape. But then again it could be a box inside the box...
