View Full Version : Macbook Pro Wakes From Sleep With Lid Closed

When I go to bed, I like to just put my macbook pro to sleep by closing the lid. But almost 100% of the time it wakes itself. It gets really hot when this happens so I've been turning it off most of the time instead, but I'd really like to get this resolved.

I have an external monitor plugged into it so I know its awake as the screen shifts over to the external monitor. When no monitor is plugged into it, I do occasionally hear the hard drive spin up. I have tried unplugging everything except for the power cable to see if that might help, but the result is the same. Any ideas?

I have a 1st generation 15" Macbook Pro running OS X 10.5.3.

Maybe something is triggering it? Maybe the mouse or the keyboard?

Does anybody living next to you use an apple remote? :D it wakes it from sleep, of course, unless paired.

That's the thing, I do have a wireless keyboard, but like I said, I've unplugged everything from it, and it still happens. Only mouse and keyboard that would cause it are the built in keyboard and trackpad. I would just like to be able to close it again and not have it wake up automatically.

Actually, this isn't true. Is your wireless keyboard or mouse bluetooth?

No, both are just run of the mill wireless, when I close the lid, they're unplugged. Bluetooth is turned off on my MacBook Pro anyway.

Ok Go to System Preferences and go to Keyboard and Mouse. Go to the bluetooth section in Keyboard and mouse and make sure the "Wake computer from bluetooth devices is NOT checked.

Does the computer also randomly turn on when it's shut down, but plugged into an outlet? I had this and your problem a while back....

Do you have it set to wake on a BT event? I do that with my 12" Powerbook, so that I can run it on an external monitor with the case closed.

I put it to sleep by closing the lid, then start it back up with a mouse or keyboard movement.

Are you sure it actually went to sleep in the first place? sometimes mine has a brain fart and remains in kinda a zombie state when I put it to sleep (the screen goes blank and the sleep light becomes lit but I can still hear the hd spinning, usually only solved w/ a hard reset).

If these things don't work, bring your Macbook Pro over to the apple store and have it looked at.

i have this same problem, but it's when my mbp is moved. i put it to sleep via closing the lid or choosing sleep from the shutdown option menu. it goes to sleep (yeah sometimes u have to wait for it to spin down) and will remain sleeping unless i move it physically. i hear it spin back up and the apple logo lights up. if i put it in my bag, 30 min later it will be screaming hot and half the battery is drained.

i hope it's something because my warranty has run out (though it's been happening for months)!!

Perhaps the latest Leopard update (10.5.4) would fix it? I'm not sure, but it's worth updating anyway to ensure the latest security fixes etc. are in place. :p

Do you put anything over your keyboard? I discovered that the Marware Protection Pack's keyboard cover was waking mine from sleep because it's just thick enough to push one key.

I had a this problem with my Mac Pro, turns out that it was the built-in camera in my monitor that was causing it. Try unplugging everything but power and close the lid.

I have a MacBook Pro 2.2GHz and it wakes from sleep every time I shut the lid to put it to sleep. It's driving me bonkers! I got mad at it today and slammed the lid closed. I have repaired permissions, reset the power management, and yet it still does it. I have found that it only really seems to happen when it's plugged in. Maybe it's a bad power adapter?

Something has to be triggering it and I know power change does not trigger that; do you have an automator task set up?

DHagan4755
Jul 20, 2008, 08:54 AM
Nope, no Automator scripts. I had actually just restarted the machine so there wasn't much running. I unplugged the power adapter while it was charging and that was the only way to get it to sleep. An hour or so later when I woke it, it locked up solid (no beachball just froze) and I had to hold the power button down to turn it off. I let it sit overnight and turned it on in the morning. This is really annoying!

apple told me that if i'm going to be moving my mbp that i should always shut it down. bs. they are giving up on sleep??

from a couple people i've spoken to, including powerbookmedic.com, it's most likely the logic board which runs a thousand dollars plus 90/hr labor.

My MBP 2.4" 17" is in repairs this week partly due to that. Bluetooth is turned off.

Genius Bar was able to reproduce it with their clean OS install, so see if you can try it with a clean OS install, all updates (say on external hd) first.

I have a MBA and I have the same exact issue.
It's 6 month that I owned this Mac and the problem raised just a few days ago when they changed my logic board due to core shutdown problems.

This morning I discovered that during the night (8 hours) he waken up 13 times.
It stays awake 30 seconds and then he goes to sleep again... and then again and again.
I'm quite pissed now.

Mine seems to sleep okay during the night, but sometimes when I get home during the day it will be on again.

I just set the Power Settings to put it back to sleep after 45 minutes so if it does wake up, it goes back to sleep soon enough.

My MacBook Pro has the same issue. I do have Awaken (http://embraceware.com/software/awaken/) installed. Anyone else?

I've had this problem. Seems to be only when the power adapter is plugged in.
Also I've noticed that the light on the magsafe goes out when this happens too.... seems quite strange.

I have a possible solution for some of you. In my case, whatever mechanism that detects that the lid of the computer has opening is being extremely sensitive. the wobbly/crappy screen latch problem has always been an issue (until the new unibody laptops, thank god). The computer wakes up because after you close the screen latch, the screen naturally 'raises' a bit as there is a bit of wiggle room for the screen and hence it thinks that you have opened the lid. This leads to battery life loss, overheating, and eventually damage to the computer due to overheating.

2 Solutions:

1) Put rubber feet on the corners of your screen so that the screen stays firmly latched. However, this can be tricky!!! If the rubber feet are too thick, the screen latch will not close. ALSO, you must put some rubber feet on both sides of the camera in the middle and on the corners because if you grab the laptop in the middle (logically), the screen will bend in.

2) (the method i use) The second method is disabling the wake-on-lid-open. Just go to Terminal (Applications->Utilities->Terminal) and type:
"sudo pmset -a lidwake 0" (without the quotes).

I hope this helps.

you are very welcome jomams.

metroid87706, who cares if its 5 months old? If there was a solution posted, I would not have posted my solution in the first place and judging from jomams post, it seems that there are still some people who have this issue.

My MacBookPro does the same thing. It is not connected to anything at all. It doesn't matter whether it is plugged in or not. It is already set not to have a bluetooth device wake it from sleep.

It happens after I close it and it goes to sleep. Sometime latter I will hear the fan and drive whirring, the Apple logo on top is lit, and the processor is very hot. There is no cursor when I open it and nothing is accessible. The only way I can stop it is to press the power button and shut it down.

I didn't have this happen until I upgraded to Leopard. I have installed all updates.

Any help?

Had this same problem on my uMBP 15. Drove me completely nuts. Genius did a PRAM reset and SMC reset to no avail. Eventually got a logic board replacement which fixed the problem. Good luck.

My MacBook has only recently started having the same problem.
At first I thought it was magnetic interference near the lid (like a nearby speaker). But then it happened today and there are no speakers or magnetic devices or paired wireless devices nearby.

I've also noticed that my screen has a slight imprint of the keyboard buttons as if the screen is pressing against the keyboard when the lid is closed - so I thought maybe the lid wasn't completely shutting. But no matter how many times I try to press the lid shut that doesn't help. Then just for the heck of it, I decided to open Front Row and then exit out of it. Because I often (60% of the time) have my MacBook connected to an external display for Front Row, so I thought perhaps it was confused and thought it was still connected to the external display. And doing that did seem to work. Weird right? Or maybe it was just a coincidence?

I recently have been having problems with the 10.6.3 update. Specifically, awakening from sleep leaves the backlight off. I haven't been able to solve this, but thought it might have to do with my changed lidwake setting?

I wondered if anyone else who had posted in this thread ran into problems with the 10.6.3? I haven't solved the problem yet, but went back and set
sudo pmset -a lidwake 1
enter root password
pmset -b lidwake 0

I've only had problems with it waking while closed while on the battery, so I thought that might help with the times when I was connected to the wall. I don't want to lose the setting altogether though! I figured it would be reset when I reset my PRAM?
