iPhone Tab as seen on the Apple.com (http://www.apple.com)
In the days leading to the 2008 Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple has started making small changes to some of their international websites hinting at the imminent launch of the iPhone in Brazil, Canada and Mexico. In the HTML source code for Apple's websites for Canada (http://www.apple.com/ca/), Brazil (http://www.apple.com/br/), and Mexico (http://www.apple.com/mx/), one reader found the following code:

http://images.macrumors.com/article/2008/06/08/001840-navcode2.png

This represents HTML code for an "iPhone" navigation tab wrapped in HTML comment tags so Web browsers will ignore it. When Apple removes the surrounding comment code, it will reveal an "iPhone" tab (see above) on these country's webpages.

Rogers previously announced (http://www.macrumors.com/2008/04/29/rogers-to-bring-iphone-to-canada/) that they would be delivering the iPhone to Canadian customers while America Movil has announced (http://ukpress.google.com/article/ALeqM5iAAVQ_fHoWRVWKYPvxnRZc8ArMLw) iPhone support for Mexico and Brazil.

Apple's Worldwide Developer's Conference kicks off on Monday, June 9th, 2008.

Update: The Canadian webpage apparently has had this code since August 2007. Mexico also since August.

Good point - but then again there are all those people that spend time in making mockups and photoshopped pics... seriously, don't people go outside anymore and play baseball or something?

I just had a look at the Aussie one - the code is surprisingly short.

6 pages when copied directly into text edit - large font and it's spaced pretty big too. There's not much code there to be honest. Not hard to paste it all into a pages doc and search for iPhone.

Hmmm. A million customers. Bell curve. The bleeding edge 1-2% are still 10,000 geeks. Say some of them occasionally browse source, especially considering the product release timing, and IM and email each other. These geeks are hooked-up.

Not surprising considering the apparent "kudos" people get for any leak or observation whatsoever.

They sure don't do it for the money!

Exactly. This code has been there for years in all american sites. Apple like many webdesigner just use the commente tag in HTML to hide it so they dont have to do 2 versions of the stuff (in this case the menu bar)

Some people are wondering how people find these things, and how they make the time to find it. I believe I can show you that it's not that hard.

1. Be bored
2. On Apple's homepage, press Option-Command-U
3. Press Command-F
4. Type iPhone

There you go, the first thing that comes up is what is discussed in the article. That is how people found the iPhone code hiding in the page. Yeah, they must not have a life if they spent 5 seconds doing that

Don

They do it for YOU!. Just that YOU can read this stuff here on the forums and get the infos you wouldn't know otherwise.
So the real question is: Don't you have anything better to do than reading this forum all the time?

To be fair, as you ses, mysef am reading here, but the magic solution is to keep time for everything you need/want to do.
Maybe they only check from time to time (and with a bit imagination, it would be logical to search for that iPhone tap..though it's old news.) or hell yes, maybe they really have no friends and nothing to do!!:D

EDIT: And as you can see from all the other posts, its not as hard and time consuming as you might have thought in the first place.

Nope, in fact Brazil is also new, since only recently the local news channels reported increased Apple activity due to the emergence of the country as a global economic power and its overall stability.

Apart from Mexico as obvious NAFTA partner and Apple's neighbor market, Brazil is next with more than 50,000 iPhones already, and will provide Apple with yet another iPhone cash cow.

I looked through the code on the US site to find out how they made the tab bar so I could copy the code onto my own website.

Curiosity leads to snooping around. The more hints you come across the better. I do hope whoever found this one did a word search ok the page source and did not manually look for that line of code.

I'm assuming you just mean to learn the technique for the mouse-over rather than to steal their navbar. They use the best method because it prevents the stupid flicker effect in IE6. (Curse you IE6...)

Even if you didn't do a word search, it would be logical to check the navigation bar, since that is where it already appears on apple.com.

If you have the Firebug extension for Firefox, you can just inspect whatever part of the page you want. Pretty useful tool if you're a web developer.

For HTML it's a piece of cake in Safari. Right click on a page, View Source, Command + F, type what ever you want to find.

No photoshop involved in this one! Damn I went and looked at the code and found it in 2 seconds. OH BABY! OH BABY! OH BABY! Common Rogers get your act together, have this phone available soon! And P.S If its not cheap on a three year plan i`ll beat up a old lady for one....

I think my heads gonna explode.

Ha! My thoughts exactly

Though some do not like all of this crazy information, I found all of it to be hilarious and exciting

I come to this site FOR this crazy Australian box photos that probably aren't true, the "I work for AT&T store and they arent letting me off the week of <insert date>", etc...

acfusion29

I think this is because when they update the front page for the US website, they gotta do it for the Canadian one as well, so they just take the American one and paste that code in there so it changes it to a the regular navigation without an iPhone link.

And for people saying who has the time to look through HTML... simple. You right click, view source, then hit command+F (or ctrl+f for windows) and search 'iPhone' (no '') ... it's not rocket science.

I don't think it really means a lot as it's just a piece of code hidden in the page at the moment, especially since it's been there a long time for the Canadian store. They probably just use the same template anyway. But we do know the iPhone is coming, just a matter of when. If they had added that code yesterday or the button was there now, I would probably be a little more excited about that.

Yeah. I found out how to make the mouse over work and how to make them link to other sections of the website. The other (head) admin took it down because he didn't like the art style... lots of members have been complaining about it but none of them have actually made something that satisfies him. I think he was just worried about me going over his head...

I'll have to try that out sometime...
