Output to both audio-out and internal speakers with 24" iMac OSX.5.3

Basically I have been unsuccessful at getting the audio to work with both my internal and external speakers with my new iMac. As it stands, it will only output to the speakers when I have them plugged into the audio out jack, and I cannot seem to locate a way to change that in any of the system preferences or forums. Any suggestions?

I believe that is the standard... if you plug in external speakers the internal set will go silent.

I understand that. I am hoping that there is a way that I can prevent it, so that I can have audio output from both my internal and external speakers.
