cannot mount .dmg's?

Just got the ibook, g4 running panther, any .dmg file I've tried to open will fail to open. Am I missing something? I've downloaded several files from download.com and they all do not open, I get an error. any ideas?

I'm pretty sure this is an uncommon, but known issue with iBook G4s. I have heard that reinstalling the OS completely (it's new, so that's not a biggie, right?), and/or applying the 10.3.1 update from the downloaded installer (not Software Update) might fix the problem.
