I know there is the monthly service charge but it does so much more, no need to rely on wi fi.

This makes the ipod touch 300$ look ridiculous.
Er, the iPhone is going to cost you about $1650 over the course of the contract. A comparable (non-data inclusive) cell plan might run you about half that. Toss in a free handset and a $300 touch and you're saving over $500.
I'm disappointed, not surprised mind you just disappointed, there was no talk of other carriers or better plan pricing from ATT.

Completely agree, I bought a 16gb touch last November as that was the largest capacity at the time. I had to dump so much stuff to get it to fit. My contract just finished so I was looking forward to a 32Gb iPhone. Well I guess it has to be something else now...

Jun 9, 2008, 01:55 PM
I have to say I am very impressed with the $199 price point for the 8 GB, and that this price point is worldwide. Kudos to Apple on doing this, they could have made off like bandits. How can anyone complain about that pricing??
It's disappointing that it was iPhone only, but I was happy with what they covered. The apps and iPhone 2.0 sound great (and it sounds like there will be plenty more where that came from), the new iPhone 3G sounds great, mobileme sounds great (let's see if the implementation for mobileme is as well; it was funny how people applauded when it was announced that mobileme was replacing .mac).
So I have to say, for it being an iPhone-only keynote, I was pretty impressed. And I'll be eagerly awaiting news on Snow Leopard later today. :)

Thanks for the lunchtime entertainment -- I've never read so many absolutely crazy posts in one place, at one time.
Did people really think he wasn't going to introduce a new iPhone?
Well, I'm neither elated nor disappointed. 3G is nice, but predictable. GPS is the same.
But the lack of more capacity and the fact that there is still no video conferencing means I can wait a while and continue to enjoy my now old-fashioned iPhone until Christmas when Apple will introduce a slightly newer iPhone that doesn't offer much new except capacity, colors, or whatever. But that is the phone I'll buy.
My iPhone was not made out-of-date today. AT&T's 3G network may be larger than in the past, but it still doesn't cover metropolitan areas, let alone the country.

There's no way the UK version's going for the equivalent of $199. No way. There must be strings attached like you pay $399 and get a $200 refund when it's registered for contract?

I don't like to post complaints, so don't read this comment necessarily as a complaint, but . . .
I really, really like the weight and feel of the current iPhone (now, old iPhone). With a rubber mask on, it stays in place in the front of the car. Sometimes lighter is not better. I also like the metal case -- plastic scares me and screams "cheap" to me.
But ... I'll wait and see when it hits the Apple or AT&T stores if I change my mind. Not that I'll have a choice unless someone comes out with a metal case as an after market product.

It's called jailbreaking and unlocking.
If someone unlocks the new iPhone so it can work as a touch (music/movies/wifi/app store) plus has the camera, BT headphone support, speaker (it's noce for YouTube and whatnot), and GPS (with standalone map software, of course) I might be tempted to sell my touch and eat the loss on it to use the iPhone as a stand alone device.
For me it comes down to $60 per month being just too much for a cell phone plan, even with unlimited data, especially without unlimited nights/weekends/texts.
Sprint (say what you want about the CS - I've not a problem with them personally, and I've had nothing but trouble with ATT - but I'm not going to argue with anyone about it) will give more more minute, unlimited nights/weekends/text/data/picture mail/video mail, and earlier (7pm) nighttime rate start time for $30 per month. Half price of ATT.
I can get a Palm Cetro for $99, after rebate. Again, half price. The iPhone is NICE. It's awesome, even the 1G model without all the new features. But, I don't think it's 2x as nice.
8gb iPhone + 2 years service = $1639
Centro + 2 year service = $819 ... that leaves a lot of cash for whatever it is you feel the iPhone gives you that the competition doesn't. iPod touch and a nice GPS will still leave over $300 in your pocket at the end of the day, and those will keep working for nothing when your contract runs out.

Last I looked, Apple made more than just the freaking iPhone. 10.6 may get 'previewed' in the sessions, but obviously Steve is deemphasizing OS X, and the rest of the hardware lines. Maybe he should just go ahead and change the corporate name to The iPhone Company.

I'm sticking with my current iPhone. With the new software, there's really no compelling reason to upgrade. EDGE is good enough for me. And... I can't stand the plastic on the back. I hated the iPod Nano for this.

Jun 9, 2008, 02:10 PM
I really don't know what the complaining is about:
iPod Touch: only $10 to upgrade to the new system. You pay $129 to upgrade your Mac's system, $10 for the added functionality you'll be getting really doesn't seem like a lot to me.
Lack of focus on Mac: they dropped "computer" from the name of the company. What did you expect? I really would have liked for their to be Mac news, but Steve came right out and said it would be iPhone only.
He mentioned Snow Leopard, and said there would be sessions on this, so I assume we'll hear more about it soon. Given its name is similar to the current OS (and given rumors), my guess is this will not be a major update like Tiger or Leopard was.
So why spend time talking about tweaks when you're going to drop the price of the iPhone, offer GPS, 3G, and sell it in 70 countries? Not to mention all the people and huge corporations who have been trying out the iPhone SDK demo. If iPhone hadn't have had center stage, I think a lot of people would have been disappointed.
I was one of the people who was most upset by computers taking the backseat to the iPhone, but I'm beginning to see now everything that iPhone is capable of. So yes, we need Mac updates and information as well, and I'm a little bummed that there was none of this in the keynote, but I can understand this being very iPhone oriented. And with iPhone using the same kernel as OS X, iPhone development and Mac development are going to be more and more related, IMO.

If Snow Leopard really is just an Intel-only version of Leopard, what would be the point in making a big deal out of it? We already know what Leopard does and developers already know that Cocoa is the new Carbon. I highly doubt there will be new features in Snow Leopard.
Also, was there any mention on whether or not the Bluetooth in the iPhone still be limited to headsets, or can it be used for data transfer, too?

Have to say the new prices are very, very good, but as an existing 16GB iPhone owner, I can't see any compelling reason to get the new one, unless O2 give them away: 3G is good but not essential, and the same with GPS (I've got GPS in my car).
No front camera (and therefore no Video Conferencing) is a major mistake IMO - apart from anything it still leaves other phone companies some leverage to snipe at the iPhone: 99%+ of 3G phones have support for video calling
On the subject of cameras, 2MP is a bit lame in 2008: I didn't even think they'd be able to source 2MP sensors any more!
Finally, still no MMS - I don't use it myself but a lot of people do, and to leave it off is, to be honest, lame
So, the new iPhone has a plastic back, no dock in the box (both to save money I guess) and 99% the same hardware as the old one. Sounds more like iPhone Lite than iPhone V2 to me...

My 2 cents re: lack of new Macs...
You gotta keep in mind that a new Intel platform is around the corner, and Apple will probably wait for that. It would be pointless to introduce new (or improved) models based on the old platform. I know they started early with some sort of Nehalem hybrid in the iMac but I think this experiment was a one-off, not to be used in MacBooks...
Back in the PPC days, nobody knew that the G3, G4 and G5 were coming, so Apple could sneak up and surprise you. But Intel's primary market is Windows-based PCs and they are completely open about technology they have in the pipeline, so you may wanna keep an eye on Intel for hints on when to expect new Macs.

It's to be expected that the iPhone stole the show - it's a brand-new platform for developers. They still managed to keep it developer-centric, even if that did make it a bit boring. Then they livened it up by talking about the 3G model, and everybody complains that it's not developer-enough for them.
Remember that the iPhone uses OSX as well. A developer's conference for Apple devices includes the iPhone as well as the Mac. And given that it's a new platform, I don't think it's unfair that it takes the first keynote, whilst 10.6 comes after lunch. Besides, if rumours are to be believed, 10.6 isn't a very exciting update anyway.
Here's one of the more interesting tidbits from the iPhone site:
More wireless. Less space.
iPhone 3G delivers UMTS, HSDPA, GSM, Wi-Fi, EDGE, GPS and Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR in one compact device — using only two antennas. Clever iPhone engineering integrates those antennas into a few unexpected places: the metal ring around the camera, the audio jack, the metal screen bezel, and within the iPhone circuitry itself. And intelligent iPhone power management technology gives you up to five hours of talk time over 3G networks. That’s some of the best in the business.
Still, am excited to see what 10.6 brings. Please let it be liveblogged.

I'm saddened by the limited scope people on this board have when it comes to discussion of the iPhone. We can't be stuck in the past and cling onto desktops and laptops. With this presentation, OSX Mobile may be on its way to surpassing Windows Mobile, Symbian and Blackberry OS as far as functionality in a year flat...that's remarkable. I think this was a great informative conference and I can't wait to buy the new iPhone 3G. I'll get one for mom too.

Ug, just saw the tech specs page for the iPhone and it says assisted GPS which means it won't work if you don't have cell coverage, which sucks. Nice I suppose in that it will probably require much less of a clear view of the sky to get a fix, but I'd still rather have "real" GPS.
The best thing was the software, imo, the developer tools sounded great, and the APIs they're giving devs to work with sound powerful (a full OpenGL library?! Awesome).

Seeing as how without cell coverage you wouldn't be able to download anything into Google Maps to make sense of your current location, i think it's a moot point...
a-GPS is an enhancement of "real" GPS for small devices: It still communicates with GPS satellites but also uses an "assistance server" for those occasions when you can't get a clear lock onto 3 or more satellites

To all those people whining about the camera...there's NO POINT WHATSOEVER in cramming more megapixels onto a sensor of that size! You get more noise, and you get huge pictures that, when taken in anyting but burning sunshine, will have to be reduced in size to be even close to viewable.
I applaud Apple for not increasing the numbers on that one...the sensors just aren't good enough to make it worth it.

Hmm, I really wanted to upgrade from my current iPhone, but now I don't really have a good enough reason.
1. GPS is a good addition, but I already have a Garmin.
2. 3G is nice, but anywhere that I ever just sit down to do some browsing has WiFi. EDGE is fine for me when I need to look up a thing or two on the go.
3. Battery life is decent enough.
That's about it for new hardware. The rest all seems to be software. But it does look like an excellent product for everyone that doesn't own an iPhone yet!

Incorrect. The PowerPC macs are still too new to be dropped entirely so soon.
Thus Intel only version. If PPC macs were being dropped completely they wouldn't need to come out with 10.6, they would just make the new 10.5 update run only on Intel macs. PPC hasn't become legacy yet, and can't, really, until that last Apple Care plan expires, but the focus has been shifting to the Intel-based Macs and this is just one more step. I hate that everyone thinks "OMG NEW OS I MUST BUY IT!!!" If you have a PPC and can't run the new OS that will most likely do the exact same thing as your current OS, tough. You'll have to upgrade someday anyway.

Even those of us who were well aware that it was a developer conference (and thus set our expectations accordingly) were a little underwhelmed by the unusually blatant disregard for the 99.9% who aren't developers. We're talking a new iPhone here. Perhaps not a biggie in the US and other countries where it's already been out for a year, but in some 50 other countries both the media and millions of Apple fans have been up to their necks in hype for the last few weeks. It's not very elegant, polite or business-savvy to kick off this announcement with an hour of mind-numbing drivel about API:s. I've seen WWDC coverage many times so I was already expecting having to watch paint dry, but I wasn't prepared for also having to watch it grow old and have paint babies who go to school and make macaroni pictures.

One is happy to be of service. ;)
Now, this stuff about "maximum price around the world = $199 / $299", what do they mean by that? Surely they can't mean $199 worth of my local currency + VAT?
I mean, take the Mac Pro which starts at $2,795 in the US. That's 17,766 SEK. Add the ludicrous Swedish sales tax (25%) and you have 20,957 SEK. But the Mac Pro starts at 23,995 SEK. Translated back to USD, that's $4,000(!). So the price doesn't reflect the poor value of the USD in the least.
If they literally mean $199, or 1,193 SEK + VAT, I'll take two phones. Hey, I'll take five. But somehow I just can't believe that number. It's the same as a friggin' iPod Nano 4 GB. And 3G plans are dirt cheap in Sweden so that can't be the catch either. This pricing is beyond aggressive, they're wiping everyone else off the map, are they selling it at a loss or what?
Also... anyone else a tad underwhelmed by the design? The old iPhone was very elegant with its metal back and those perforated black rubber thingies at the bottom. This new one just looks like a really fat iPod Touch... or did I miss anything?

Yeah, that will be an instant buy for me if it turns out to be true. I mean, I bought the 1st gen Iphone for 399 $ + tax in the US, equivalent to roughly 2800 SEK. Even the 16 GB model would be 299 x 6 = 1794 SEK really much more cheaper.
I think the hook on this one will be a long term expensive exclusive contract to Telia. We will only have to wait and see. I would expect an announcement regarding the subscription plans from Telia (or whatever carrier the rest of the chosen countries have) within this month.
