All the live blogs say plastic, but I don't know whether that was something that was actually reported or just inferred from the pictures. I'd still be surprised if its not zirconia. Ok whatever. Everyone reset their countdowns until July 11.

July 11th. Another month.

What an anti climax today has been. Doh.

No, it's a direct quote (I was listening to a live audio stream). Steve said "full plastic back." Hopefully it's pretty scratch resistant.

Argh, another month!

Minimal updates. Some minor design changes (to make the iPhone less expensive to produce). Much as I expected.

There will now be a short pause while I laugh at all the people who were expecting improved camera, video chat, 32 Gb etc...

Im so dissappointed in apple I cant even begin to discribe it. A plastic back?? are you kidding me. Dont get me wrong I own a PC and my Iphone is my only apple product but I have grown to expect apple to lead the way in inovation not take queues from Microsoft. I ponied up the 600 bucks when it was released it was tollerable because it was diffrent it looked nice and had a level of class no other phone possessed. Now they have this cheap looking Iphone for 199 which makes mine pretty much worthless in resale value.

On the requirements it mentions iTunes 7.7 or later. Maybe that's part of the hold up.

I buy my phones because they're useful, not because they make me look cool.

Plastic backs should be much more scratch resistant than the stainless steel (which scratches if you so much as sneeze on it). And $199 is a great price. I'm excited that Canada is finally getting them.

How can anyone complain about the plastic back cover when the phone is as low as $199 unsubsidized? I was disappointed until that bombshell.

Apple sees the world of hurt the US/global economies are heading towards. Now is not the time to be selling $500 cellphones with exotic materials with an eye towards moving 10 million of them in a year.

As someone suggested, plastic is not automatically a bad thing. The Playstation 3 uses high quality black plastic to very good effect. I have faith that Steve Jobs would not approve an aesthetically wanting design.

"Requires new 2-year AT&T rate plan, sold separately."

How can anyone complain about the plastic back cover when the phone is as low as $199 unsubsidized?

Um, it is subsidized. Every mention of the price on the Apple store has a little disclaimer that says only with a new AT&T rate plan.

Um, it is subsidized. Every mention of the price on the Apple store has a little disclaimer that says only with a new AT&T rate plan.

The old iPhone had that line, too. That says nothing about a subsidy -- it only means that the phone is still exclusive to AT&T.

so the "sold separately" part means it's unsubsidized?

Not sure if anyone saw this but the headphone jack is noted as a 'mini-jack' on the apple web site?? does that mean it is smaller than the standard headphone jack? kinda like all the other cell phones out there that have a crappy small headphone jack!

The phone IS that price, unsubsidized. here is an apple rep chat I had a few minutes ago.

You are chatting with Jonathan P, an Apple Expert
Hi, my name is Jonathan P. Welcome to Apple!
me - I have a question about the iPhone 3g.
I am happy to help!
me - Will that price be with a 2 year contract, or is that the straight out price?
That supposed to be the direct purchase price.
It is meant to be affordable for everyone!
me - Alright, well thank you very much!
The iPhone 3G will be available July 11th in 22 countries. The maximum price around the world is $199 USD for the 8 Gig.

that was a very vague conversation. you should have confirmed if we can walk away without signing a contract.

however, I doubt the rep would know for sure. everything is really speculation until we hear something official from Apple itself. And so far, we've only been hearing things from AT&T's end...which I won't believe until it's made official.

another reason to possibly be disappointed. posted on www.gizmodo.com

iPhone SDK Agreement Prohibits "Real-Time Route Guidance" and Saving Lives
It looks like hopes for a more robust GPS app for the iPhone 3G, with say, voice turn-by-turn navigation—or just a different way of doing things—might be well and dashed. The SDK agreement has a curious little clause that would seem to ban TomTom (or anyone else) from working their GPS magic:

"Applications may not be designed or marketed for real time route guidance; automatic or autonomous control of vehicles, aircraft, or other mechanical devices; dispatch or fleet management; or emergency or life-saving purposes."
The possibility of no new GPS wares is disconcerting—banning remotely controlling vehicles or robots is downright disturbing. And why don't they want app makers to save lives? Does this mean your iPhone would explode if you built an app for a GPS-guided, remote-controlled robot that saves lives? [BBG]

I found this on a review on: http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/real-world-photos-inside-outside-iphone-3gs-new-shell/

the iPhone 3G’s shell is indeed just glossy plastic with a thin layer of clear coating. It’s not ceramic, as some might have guessed, and not covered in a magic material that won’t scuff: as a result, you can expect to see marks similar to the ones on first-generation iPod nanos and fifth-generation iPods, all over again. The black version, as shown here, picks up fingerprints and smudges at an impressive rate; we wish we’d been able to take some pictures without the smudges. Ironically, the white plastic color that Apple discontinued for iPods may wind up being the most attractive color for new iPhones, especially after spending a few days in a pocket or purse.

Have fun with that plastic phone of yours hahaha.
