According to Apple's website:

3G iPhone = 115.5 x 62.1 x 12.3 mm (L x W x H)
2G iPhone = 115.0 x 61.0 x 11.6 mm (L x W x H)

Or for those metrically-challenged people:

3G iPhone = 4.5 x 2.4 x 0.48 inches (L x W x H)
2G iPhone = 4.5 x 2.4 x 0.46 inches (L x W x H)

Which doesn't show as much difference since inches are far less accurate than millimeters.

Those differences are so small as to be almost imperceptible. We're talking .5-1mm.

and how does it weigh? I know the new weighs 133grams. What about the old one? I didnt find anything on Apple's website (though I admit I didnt look hard - watching Italy - Hollland now!)

He did indeed. So why are these numbers higher?

Taper, like MacBook Air.

Taper, like MacBook Air.

aaah, well that doesn't seem exactly fair to say...It's overall thicker, but thinner on the edges?

I guess the average thickness across the device is lower than the average on the current model.

The 3G version is 2 grams lighter.
