I pride myself on making smart purchases, and can honestly say that I only spend money on things which I know I am going to make use out of. I only have so much disposable income, so I strive to make every penny worthwhile!

I bought a Palm Tungsten T awhile back, but realized I never used it. Sold it on eBay.

Also, a few years back I spent well over $2000 on my mountain bike, but lost interest in riding. Sold that too, although I now regret it, as I want to get back into biking.

There is some stuff I could take away to ebay, feel sorry about that because you know sometimes before you get the real thing you are looking for, you get a bizarre copy and then you have to take it away...There is a PC beside me, but it got out of use just because I took a look at apple.com  ....

Definitely the most unused gadget i own is my playstation 2. I bought it thinking it would rekindle my long lost love affair with games, but to no such avail. I havn't turned it on for at least 6 months; it sits atop my tv, collecting dust.

Recently bought a game cube to play Ikaruga (only available on game cube). Sold the ps2 3 days ago. Hopefully i'll play the game cube more regularly. Who knows.

My PB (see sig) :o I dont use it regularly (daily) , but when I do use it, I use it a lot. I use my PB only while travelling or commuting to and from places. Which is the only reason I actually bought it, it was nice and compact just what I needed to carry around.

i'm not really big into gadgets, but the only thing i've bought and don't use is some stupid $10 thing that's just useless.

i try not to buy useless stuff anymore.

i'd like to hear what the $2000+ items were that people don't use now! :D

Going with the prevailing definition of something that's relatively single-purpose... hmm. Well, thankfully I can say that I DO use the G5, Cinema 23HD and iSight enough to make them worth their cost! Right now work is keeping me from making much use of my bicycle, which was in the $1000-$1999 range, but the truly-rarely-used bike (my wife's) was cheaper... hmm.

I used to use my Palm Vx lots and lots, but I hated the version of Palm Desktop based on Claris Organiser. I preferred the Windows ported version, even though the fonts didn't line up properly when used with Kaleidoscope. Along with virtually non functional syncing with Mac OS X and a round the world trip on which I took my Powerbook, the Palm became redundant.

Since getting back from the trip, I've tended to use .Mac or my iPod to get calendar and contact information on the go. The one thing I miss is the ability to scrawl notes. New phone numbers go in my mobile (cell) phone. Just waiting for an excuse (ooh woops, how did my phone fall in my beer?) to buy a Symbian or Palm based phone with Bluetooth and iSync support. Or preferably the 3G cell phone iPod with iChat AV, BlueTooth, Airport, Safari, etc.

I'll probably put the Palm on eBay once I can hunt down the Windows software CD...

Well, depends on the definition of usage... Some of my (very expenisve) guitars I play rarely but I still count that as using them.

Does it count if I bought the item and then resold it on eBay? :)

I bought a Nikon N995 digital camera about a week before a summer-long trip to Washington D.C. and I HATED it. Too big, too bulky.

So, the day I got back, I posted it on eBay and sold it for only a $14 loss. I REALLY lucked out on that one.

Well, the problem is how you interpret "don't use regularly".

For example, I have around $6000 invested in a 35mm Underwater Camera system, and it usually only gets two workouts (while on vacation scuba diving) per year.

That's not particularly "regular", so does it count? I'd say not, partly because I've been using it this way for years, and because a 'use' is usually a full week of scuba dives at 2-3x/day. So even though it spends a lot of time in the closet, it does come out on a regular basis.

Similarly, if you have an electrical generator in case your power goes out, should that count? IMO, probably not. But if you have a generator that you bought with a different intent - - say, to take it camping on the weekend to power the TV set to watch the football game - - and it gathers dust instead of getting used for that intended purpose, then I'd say that it should count.

Overall, I have items that qualify, but because I'm not using them, its hard to remember what they are, etc. My wife, however, would point to the canoe in the back yard. Twenty years ago, I used it a lot with my father, and when he retired and sold his house, I adopted it. Its been in storage in my back yard ever since. It hasn't been used because its a classic wooden canoe (40+ years old), and its weight takes two good men to carry it around, which means that its far too heavy for my petite wife to help me carry it, let alone lift it up to load it onto the car's roof racks to take it out to use it. It currently needs some serious restoration work, but I'd guess that to buy new a work of equal quality would probably be around $2000.

My Canon Z60 digital camcorder that I bought a year ago. Although I was able to convert my analog video to digital with it and it certainly came in useful for that, I use it once in a while as a rule.

However, the most expensive (though technically not a gadget) is my Ovation 1867 shallow body cutaway acoustic/electric guitar that I paid $1200.00 for two years ago. I keep saying that I'm going to pick it back up and start playing again, but I never seem to find the time (or make the time...too busy doing other things like being on my G4).

It's been sitting in it's case practically the whole time I've owned it...still brand new. I'm thinking about Ebaying just in time for Xmas.

The few pictures I have made on it are stunning, but there are a lot of excuses for me not using it nearly as often as I should.

1) The OS X drivers sucked until Panther.
2) The black-and-white text printing it VERY disappointing. Even with black and light black cartridges, the text appears gray and not sharper than my old Epson 740 output.
3) A clog of the yellow nozzle in the middle of an 8x10 print made for an enormous waste of time, paper and ink.
4) The thing positively drinks ink.
5) My family and friends aren't often in the mood to be photographed. I remember my wedding photographer was obnoxiously pushy, but I realized that is how pros have to be. If you waited until the subjects felt like it, there would be very few photos.
6) Switching from roll paper to cut sheets is tedious.

What really makes me want to kick myself is that I really don't often make pictures bigger than 8x10. The 2200 can make 13x19 (or 13 x whatever width you want using roll paper). For about 1/2 the price I could have had a printer of comparable quality that maxed out at 8 x 10 and if I farmed out all of my 13 x 19 work to my local lab at $20 a pop, I'll bet my next five years wouldn't cost $100!

Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Hard to say. I rarely use my digital camera b/c I just don't take a lot of pictures. But, I use it much much more than I used my 35mm thanks to the lack of film processing costs.

So probably the iSight b/c I pretty much never use it.

I voted in the $1000-$2000 range because I don't think I use my mini-dv camcorder "regularly." I don't think it was a waste of money, however. In fact, i'm using it more now 3 years after purchase than I did when I first bought it.

I bought an early "PDA"-like device because I knew I wanted to have a searchable address book and calendar that would fit in my pocket and beep to remind me of appointments. The Agenda used a one-handed typing scheme called "microwriting" which was great -- one key for each finger, and extra keys for the thumb to do numbers and punctuation etc. I could use it faster than I could write with a pencil.

Unfortunately, the display was abysmally small, the device was bulky enough that it would fit in a jacket pocket but not a shirt pocket, the rechargeable battery didn't last more than a few days, and the "synch" system was just plain broken. I used it halfheartedly for a few months, then gave up on it. That was probably 15 years ago.

[When the PalmPilot showed up, I gave it a try and realized it was exactly right. :-) I've been using Palms consistently (and constantly) for more than five years now.]

My under-used tech toy is my Tibook. I got it for work, but the tech here is a wimp and won't let me hook it up to the internal network. I'm constantly showing him that the security features are beyond my companies standards, and he's impressed but still doesn't do anything to get it on the network.

Right now I use my Tibook when I'm away from home, so I am getting some use out of it, but sometimes weeks go by without booting it up. :(

A suggestion, altough it will take some work.

1) Find out who the tech's backup is. Earn trust of same.

2) Think up a reasonably plausible "URGENCY" claim to get a connection once you ask.

3) Slowly get your ducks lined up on all of the Company policy and Security stuff, and start a very informal email discussion on the with your decision-averse tech. Your goal is to get him to agree piecemeal to each policy requirement, but you must conciously keep it piecemeal so that he doesn't have to make a final decision. The reason for this is that you're really laying the groundwork for the backup to make the final decision based on the tech saying that all the small individual puzzle pieces are golden. Take your time and don't rush it.

4) Around the coffee pot, find out what interests your tech has, including his vacation preferences (talk about your own). If he's not the type to take vacations, encourage him to do so. Remind him that Passports are cheap, and so are most airline flights. The goal is to find out when he's going on vacation (the longer the duration and the further away the better).

5) Sit back and wait until the day for #4 arrives, then call in that "urgent" request for a networking connection to the backup tech. He'll be reluctant to make the decision on his own, but that's where all of those emails from #3 come in...

Remember the adage that its easier to ask for forgiveness afterwords than to ask for permission.

Okay, gadget's that I've bought but don't use at least once a month:

Sony DCR-PC100 miniDV camcorder: $1799 on sale in mid 2000. I use it once every two months or so, plus extensively during vacations, but it's not an 'everyday' type of device.

Sony MZ-R50 MiniDisc recorder/walkman: ~$400 in 1999. (Bought to replace a broken MD recorder/walkman bought for $800 in 1994, that I didn't use very more anyway. My logic in buying the new one was that with a new one, I'd use it more often.)

Sony CD/MD/Tape 'shelf' stereo system: $1000 in 2000.

Sony MC-PC10 'Music Clip' mp3 player. ~$500 in 2000. (64MB built-in memory, not expandable. It was cool back then, when most mp3 players had a 64MB limit anyway, and it was much smaller. But, in the days of the iPod, it's not so useful anymore. Plus, it required that you use Sony's custom music software (OpenMG,) which sucks.)

Sony DSC-P1 3MP digital still camera: ~$700 in 2001. (I owned a Sony DSC-F505 2MP camera at the time, but the P1 was very small, and higher resolution, so I thought I'd use it more, but it's picture quality sucks compared to the 505. I've kept using the 505, and think I will until I buy Sony's new F828.)

LEGO Mindstorms Robotics Invention System, $200 in 1999. I'm actually about to donate this to a local youth group's 'Robotics team'.

The most frightening thing is that I 'impulse bought' almost all of those. I went into the store with no intention to buy anything, and came out with something, sometimes costing up to $2000. (And, you can also tell that I was a Sony freak. The only 'major' Sony item not listed was my PCG-C1X 'PictureBook' subnotebook computer. I bought it in late 1999, when the processor used in it was already obsolete (Pentium MMX 266, when 'high end' notebooks were running Pentium III's at 600MHz,) and it was my main notebook until I bought my 12" PowerBook back in July. I figure 3.5 years of service is pretty good for a notebook computer. It had been dropped many times, and still worked like a charm. I even sold it for $500 this last July to help finance my PowerBook. (I bought it new for $2000 in Dec. '99, so not a bad return on investment, as far as Windows computers go.)

My basement is littered with old electronic gadgets that haven't been used in a long time. (Three scanners, two printers, four 'modern' computers, thirty 'low-end' Macs...)

I've got a 48SX (dead) 48GX (replacement,) and a 32S-II, my 'workhorse'. I also bought a 49G out of curiosity (I like the 48GX better,) and the algebraic 30S. I'm curious about the new 49G+, 48G-II, and especially the 33S (an apparent 32S-II replacement, finally a new 'cheap' RPN!) What I'd really like, though, is a re-released 15C or 16C. (Like the stalwart 12C, only with scientific or programming functions instead of financial.)

I bought a car and it was the biggest waste of money ever! Cost me over $2200 and I only used it for a few months to get to work (then the office moved and I could walk to work!). It worked out to costing about $20-30 for every trip to work, and that's not even including gas, insurance, maintenance, etc.

I've heard people estimate that cars cost $6,000 per year, all expenses included. Here in LA, a monthly transit pass is $42, or $504 per year. Damn!

I noticed a lot of digital cameras and camcorders here and it makes me want to restate what I mentioned in my earlier post: to be a successful photographer or videographer, you need to be kind of a pushy a-hole (at least for taking pictures of people.)

I wanted to take some video and photos of Thanksgiving this year, but my mom and wife didn't want me to. However, once we got there, there was a girl taking pictures and I noticed what a hard time people were giving her when she wanted to take their pictures.

I honestly don't know if my company is using security software (nor would I post it on a public forum if I did!) I'm sure the security is pretty tight, but the tech guy won't say if there are any measures that I don't cover off. The one sad possibility is that they use some incompatible file/setting/.exe that just won't run on my mac. I do talk to executives frequently, maybe I'll find a mac user out there who had the clout to get his hooked up and see how they got it done.

I'm an 'out-of-the-way' photographer. My Sony F505 is nice because the screen rotates nicely so I can have it down at my waist level, and take pictures when nobody is noticing. (Those are the best ones, anyway.) My 505 gets used for that very reason. My newer P1 gets very little use specifically because it HAS to be used at eye level if you want any framing at all. (That, and even though it's higher on the megapixel scale, the quality of the pictures is much worse, especially indoors.)

For video, I haven't mastered the 'out-of-the-way' style yet. So I tend to only videotape big events (vacations, weddings, holidays, etc.) That, and the fact that I've already got 160GB of unedited video footage that I have never gotten around to editing, contribute to my lack of current shooting. (If I have that much of a backlog, why should I shoot *MORE*?)

Palm m130. I thought it'd organize my life while I was attending my local community college. It soon became a gaming device and now collects dust. Fortunately, I purchased the $99.99 2 year replacement plan from CompUSA so I'll eventually trade it in. The battery life was getting pretty bad anyhow.

I bought a MacAlly Icecad tablet for my old powerbook but I don't use that machine much although my father does and he doesn't use the tablet.

I also don't use my iSight enough because I don't know many people who have iChat AV.

Anyone interested in a rarely used/like new Canon GL-2 complete with Final Cut Pro 3?
How much???

Anyways, here is my list in no real order:

1. Wacom tablet... $100, but rarely used anymore.
2. Playstation 1 and one game... $150, only bought one game (Grand Turismo), never really went much farther then that.
3. iPod Photo... $500. really bummed, not long after I bought it (40GB), the prices went down and the size went up... i do use it, but it only has like 100 songs on it, but I can say that I am using it as a portable HD and backup device...
4. Canon 20d, lens, and CF card... $2400, though I use this alot, I still don't use it enough... Had it since october, and have shot 4649 pics, which averages to about 21 per day, but it might sit for a week with barely one or two shots fired...
5. Canon Elan7 and lens... $500, well bought this around the same time as the 20d, and digital is just so much easier for me (and cheaper)... Ended up giving/loaning to my current ex to replace her point and shoot... don't think she gets much use out of it though...
6. My ex... $???? Well basicly, I spend most of my "disposable" money on her, or did spend most of my money on her... Girfriends and wifes (and ex's) can be quite pricey... Still end up spending money on her even now... Poor me.

Wow, this is from a long time ago. Sad part is that I've been around for long enough to remember this >two year old thread. Anyways, mine is a four hundred dollar camera. It comes out only when I go on vacations and then collects dust in various places in my room in the meantime. Sometime I feel like using it to find that the battery has completely discharged; I end up not using it then because I don't feel like waiting for it to charge again.

My iSight. I kind of bought it on a whim the day they were introduced, thinking it would be pretty cool to use. Fact is I only know 2 Mac users that have video cameras! I use it maybe once or twice a month.

me too, sold it 2 weeks ago.

Wow, this is an old thread..

My iSight. I bought it a few months back when I got Delicious Monster's Library, thinking it would be a more efficient method of inputting bar codes for my DVD, CD, video game, and book collections. It IS more efficient, but I'm a generally lazy person who, despite recognizing the value of sense of having a digital record of these collections (in addition to the handy library functions of DL), doesn't seem to make the time to get this "work" done.

It's too bad I can't hook up my own DV camera and use it instead of an iSight. My camera has a firewire connection, so how hard could it be to use the superior functions of my camera instead?

Probably the biggest waste ever was a $5000 Apple color laserwriter that I bought for my business about 10 years ago. Probably printed a total of 1,000 pages, then broke down. Was going to cost $1K to fix; by that time color inkjets were cheaper and better print quality. I've since sold the business.

Biggest waste that I still own is a $1000 camcorder. I'd say we've filmed about 1 hour of useful video with it. I still have it, but the battery only lasts about 5 minutes/charge, so it's basically useless. Plus, it's not digital, so it's useless with iMovie, etc.

I can make better movies using my digital camera.

I actually don't buy too many gadgets. But let's see....

If we want electronics, my PS2. Although I knew when I bought it I'd hardly ever use it.

If we want stuff that just collects dust.... My harp. Almost 600 bucks for it, and I've used it for maybe an hour in the several years I've owned it. I really should play it more, since it's a beautiful instrument.

I have an unused two and a half years of a PhD program I don't use, too, but they weren't too bad, expense wise.

Currently I have an iSight that hasn't been taken out of the box. The other is a Lacie external CD burner. Out of habit I just keep backing up important files on a Zip 100. For the backup of the complete hard drive, I have the OWC Mercury Elite.
