View Full Version : New PowerBooks... Today?
MacRumors
Dec 2, 2003, 03:52 AM
An unverified report claims new PowerBooks... Tuesday (Dec 2).
The PowerBooks are not particularly due (http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/) for a release, so unclear what an update would bring.
There's no real reason to believe report.
But makes for interesting speculation in the 5 hours before such a release would be made public.
I don't actually know what Apple could do to the PowerBooks... since they were recently updated. New formfactor release perhaps? Seems speed bumps are too soon.

what a bizzarre rumor.
although that was my reaction to the 12", 17" inch rumor last MWSF-eve.
too soon for speed bumps. new vid cards? L3 for the 12"?

Is it possible the iBook G4 ate too much out of the PB's share
and so they need to make the PB more attractive?
I bet it's either just an over-hyped minor change,
or a small price drop. Or nothing at all, of course.

Well, perhaps they are going to introduce a 15" Powerbook that is working and available. Would be great for a change ... ;)

Of course I lost track of the status of the LCD Assembly for the PB15.

Probably a speed bump across the board and a new GPU for the 12" Powerbook.

if something happens, i think a price drop seems most viable ...
It's a nice non-obtrusive change.
To early for speed bums - only been like 2 months.
G5? thats more of a January event i think
tablet book? that would be kinda neat, unlikely though. along with a 10" and 19" powerbook... LOL
i like the official LCD fix for the 15"
but i think price drops seems like the safest bet, just in time for X mas shopping

Strange rumour. It wasn't long ago since PB were refreshed.
Maybe a price drop?

Dec 2, 2003, 06:42 AM
Considering the season, maybe it is something that will be consumer oriented. Again, it could be a move to clear inventories before January.
Nothing will happen to the PowerBooks, but maybe displays could be updated for the PowerMacs. It is just too soon for changes in the portables, unless a new product gets announced. There were rumours about a sub-$1000 device. I wonder if this is it.

Dec 2, 2003, 07:02 AM
I would probably just dismiss this. If anything, they will just lower the price slightly. Or maybe up the graphics RAM on the 12" to 64MB (what it should be to be honest).

Price drop, but could also be speed bump as well which will generate some more sales for folks wanting next best thing.
I expect the 17inch 1.42G4 is coming within the next two months.

The only thing that they could do is to correct some problems with the design of the 15 in. -- The others are virtually flawless for Apple products.
So, maybe some speed bumps, but I think the iBook/PowerBook comparisons on barefeats.com pretty much discount any advantage of getting an iBook if you are reliant on/plan to do 3D or Photoshop heavy work.
Get the 17 incher if that's the case!

if apple's fiscal year starts jan 1, expect price cuts. they've got to move as much product as they can before the end of the year.
makes sense. squeeze extra cash out of black monday shoppers, bring in hesitant ones with price cuts, clear inventory for end-of-year statements, win-win-win.

Probably a $200 or $100 discounts depending on what model you get.
But speed bump will be coming if not now it will happen in Jan.
I expect the PB will be revamped completely when they pump the G5 into it's PB lineup.

I'm still waiting for my PowerBook 15" ordered from a reseller on 10th November. They were expecting stock from Apple today but the status as changes from 2/12/2003 to overdue. I could have told them it was overdue!
If this unlekely rumor is true does Apple offer refunds/upgrades to those people who bought through a reseller?

Doubtful. The last round of PowerBooks is what? About 2 months old? It doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to release a new PowerBook this close to the last release. In fact it makes even less sense what with January fast approaching.

I think it's more in Apple's interest to concentrate on making the 15" models more readily available and stay on top of any LCD/lid fixes before trying to put new models or updates into the lineup.

Hi,
The UK Online Apple Store is showing 7-10 days build time for a 15" Powerbook and 4-6 days for a 12" Powerbook. Yesterday it was showing 1 Day build time for the 12" (not sure about the 15").
Does this mean anything? (maybe not - but there we go)

They need an update across the line as in taking the manufacturing contract back to Quanta. This current line is complete crap and not worthy of carrying the Apple name. This is the kind of *****ty quality you'd expect from Gateway or Dell. Whoa, wait a minute ... the same company that's making the AL books also makes laptops for none other than Gateway and Dell!

I purchased my dual 1-Gig PowerMac right after they were announced (Jan 2002?). The rumors were for the new G5, even back then, but MWSF came and went with no announcement.
About 1-2 weeks later Apple quietly announced the dual line of processors. Very stealthy introduction.
So yes, sometimes Apple does introduce new product lines outside the typical big events.
I'm looking forwared to buying something big in January. :D

Same goes for my 17"/1.33Ghz. The best Mac I've ever used and that's saying ALOT!
I've owned or used for work almost every model since my Fat Mac (that's a 128k Mac upgraded to 512k for those who were wondering.) I think there were a few II series and several Performas that I never used but other than that I've used them all.

yeah, i think that most of the people who complain about the current lineup (esp laptops) don't use or haven't used the current lineup, at least for more than 4 minutes. i haven't met a person who owns a current machine from the lineup that hasn't been absolutely thrilled with the thing...

I agree that the news will be just an xmas sale. Maybe 100 bucks off the 12 and 15 inchers and 150 for the 17. A speed bump will defintely not happen since the only place the 17" can go is 1.42ghz and that, if I recall right, is the fastest G4 available. Therefore the 17" would be stuck at that speed for up to a year or maybe longer since a G5 or a dual G4 PB this year or anytime soon next year is pure science fiction.

Noone who has used the new PB's is unhappy with them? Pheh! I am typing to you on my third, count 'em, third AL PB 15". The first was replaced because of a busted latch and associated Kernel panics. Second was big white spots, apple losing my PB, then finding it in Texas, then running out of LCD panels. Third is going to be this one when the white spots reappear since it's from the same batch as the second one. This is insanity. I have had the best of luck with apple's since my 600 dollar used G4 tower, I felt that quality control was really improving. I'm stuck, as I use FCP exclusively and have hours of edited material to complete, but I'm really disappointed with the technical problems with this batch of PB's. It's my first PB, but I've known others that tormented their powerbooks and had them always wake up from sleep as though they hadn't fallen out of a jeep... Mine I baby, and have problem after problem. If I wasn't moving around so much, I would have gotten a G5....
It's true that I have to give props to the CS people and the people at my university bookstore, they have tried to help as much as apple regs would allow.

I helped fund a new 15" AL PowerBook for my wifes Birthday/Christmas present. We've had it for 2 weeks now and the only problem is the keyboard has a strange rise in the keys towards the top left side of the keyboard and touch pad is lifted in one corner. We have not had the white spot or latch problem. Really the problems it does have are minor and I think that it's another fine Apple product.

I have that rise in the keyboard, and I've had it after 3 attempted repairs (among other repairs for other problems I might add). This problem annoys the hell out of me. And it gets worse and worse as time goes by. I realize it's minor, but they can't seem to fix it. So if I send it in again, it would be it's 4th repair. I'm in college and I don't have time anymore to send it in for a repair. Every waking hour (that I'm not in class) is devoted to my school work at the moment and I NEED this machine to do it. Regardless of how minor this problem is and how much they say they can fix it, I don't trust them. They've had over a month to try and I can't afford to send this thing in for repair anymore. Every time I send it in, I have to backup everything on it. If I send it in again, it's to the point where it's going to effect my grades. I want it replaced and to be done with it.

It's hard to say, you'll have to make the call yourself. In my opinion (which might prove to be flat out incorrect!) I don't see this type of update happening soon. Maybe an outside chance of an annoucement at MWSF, but that's it. As I said though, I could be wrong. :)
Honestly though, the current 17" is an amazing machine. You have to decide what you really need it for, and if this will get the job done. Sure, a dual 1.5 17" would be awesome, but is that something you absolutely need? My rule is always this: buy the system you need when you want it - then you're always guanteed to be happy. As for me, I just bought a 17" iMac, and could care less if G5 iMacs are announced at MWSF.
The 17" is a great machine - even if updates are around the corner, that is a machine that will satisfy you for quite a long time. And plus, if you're always waiting for the next best thing, well, you'll always be waiting!

The rise on our keyboard really is minor. If you didn't have a good eye you would never see it. Also I probably would have never seen it if I hadn't been working with it at eye level. Finally you can't fee the rise on ours at all while typing.

availability in the us is tight on 15 and 17 powerbooks. There are some in stores, not very tight there, but if you want any custom things, ie 1 dimm or faster hard drive, it will take about 3 weeks to get it made in Taiwan and have it shipped direct to you.
I know, that is how i bought my 15" and got it last friday.
also, know that for europe, we only got decent inventory in some stores recently. I hope things get better for you soon also, just did for us.

Not to throw a little gas on the fire, but here's my story...
I bought my 15" AlPB a month ago and got a really good deal on it through my business sales guy at CompUSA. Now my friend wanted to get the same deal, so I contacted my CompUSA rep and ordered it. Then he called me right back and said, "I can't order that for you, Apple is no longer shipping us ANY 15" AlPBs".
His corporate office gave him no explanation whatsoever. This was last week. Since then my friend ordered it BTO from Apple.com and it's supposed to ship in 5-7 days.
I talked to my CompUSA guy again today and he confirmed that they are completely out of 15" AlPB's and he can't order anymore. He said if he didn't know any better an update was coming, but he has no confirmation at all.
Strange, huh?

A more likely option would be to increase it to a single 1.5 ghz G4, and maybe at the next iteration, release a dual 1.2 or something (but only if G5s are ways away).

We'll probably have one more G4 update in the PowerBooks in February or March to 1.25, 1.33 and 1.42 GHz (12/15", 15" SD, 17") with a couple of other improvements (video cards), maybe L3 cache.
Then G5s in late 2004. My 2p.

If you buy from the Apple Store online they have a ten business day price protection or money back policy - but NOT on BTO - only on stock machines.

Close but also not quite on. They will not return the BTO machine for a cash refund but they will credit you for the difference.
This is straight form the Apple Stores policy page.
Should Apple reduce its price on any shipped product within 10 calendar days of shipment, you may contact Apple Sales Support at 1-800-676-2775 to request a refund or credit of the difference between the price you were charged and the current selling price._ To receive the refund or credit you must contact Apple within 14 business days of shipment

I start having fits of aggressive behaviour towards advertising materials for the 15" AluBook. ;)
BTW: Is availibility of 15" AlBooks an issue in the States or is it once again just "Old Europe"?
Not just old europe mate, here in australia too
I have been waiting 2 months for my 15" 1.25 custom built, not here yet!!!!!!!!!, and we're supposed to be 'good friends'
:p

This is straight form the Apple Stores policy page.
Thanks for the clarification MacBandit, good to know.

Hey, I heard that Apple completely changed the manufactorer for the powerbooks in the last few weeks, thus for the delay. Is this true?

Where did you hear this? I haven't heard anything along these lines, but that could lead to some interesting possibilities if it were true....

That's exactly what every Apple person I have talked to has told me. Also our new Powerbook is supposedly from this batch and hasn't exhibited any latch or screen problems. Also the lid is supposedly thicker on the new ones but I don't have an older one to compare to.

When you say "our", do you mean yours, or all of the current Powerbook's purchased w/in a week? because all i can say is that my lid is pretty thin and was a slight (almost none) latch issue.
i know i sound really paranoid about getting the "latest" product, but thats just the way i am...:D

I mean our in my wife's and mine. Though it's primarily hers so I'm against saying my powerbook.
I don't know if the lid is thicker on mine but it feels fairly stout. Yes it can be twisted or flexed but not nearly as much as the old TiBooks and a lot of the PC laptops I've played with. Also when the lid is closed the gap between the lid and the computer are equal on both sides. The latch works perfectly and unlike some people have said I don't need to use the edge of my finger or my finger nail. The latch button sticks out far enough I can just push it normally.
I do have a problem update on our powerbook though. I don't have the startup issue that many people are describing where it fails to boot up. Ours just won't respond to the power button at all. It's like the power button is disconnected completely. We took it to our local authorized Apple retailer on Monday they're going to send it in to Apple for repair. My wife had some critical school documents she needed for finals and I didn't want to go to all the work of recopying prefs and files over to the Powerbook so they were nice enough to remove the hard drive and clone the drive over to a spare drive I brought in to them.

Hmmm… it seems as though I have the “old batch” then, as my lid is relatively thin, and the lid is un-even on both sides, and the latch-button is extremely hard to push (I’ve really got to use my nail)
So far, however, I haven’t had any major reliability issues; just the lid that’s uneven.
when did you get your PowerBook? did you get it at the AppleStore? I got mine there about a week ago, maybe you just got yours?

We got ours about 2 and a half weeks ago. We made a custom order through the Apples Edu store online. It shipped directly from Taiwan.

I think if you buy a non-build to order model that they probably still have stock of the original models in stock.

Well, obviously new PowerBooks did not arrive, but they HAVE to be updated come MWSF...but does anyone know any details on what the hell Motorola is doing as far as the G4 is concerned? I mean there are the rumors that IBM is taking the helm when it comes to the iBook, but where does that leave the PowerBook? Maybe, just maybe, they have found a way for the G5 to be put in the PowerBook? Prolly not, but wouldn't that be sweet? Any thoughts, anyone?

I'm thinking the Powerbooks will be delayed until just after MacWorld. It's just a hunch so don't quote me on it.
There is a chance that a low clock rate 90nm G5 could go into a Powerbook but I think it will not happen until after Macworld as I said before.
If they get a processor update it will either be the old G4 and it will be a 1.42GHz processor same as the last PowerMacs or it will be the new IBM 750FX which is suppose to have the same Altivec coprocessor as the G5.

I could possibly see PowerBook updates in terms of speed boosts/components soon, (maybe), but no G5 PowerBooks will be released for quite a while - not until summer I'm thinking.

With more than 8 months between the last powerbook update, why does everyone assume powerbooks will be updated in January, a poultry 4 months (less than) after the last update?
It's not like the current powerbooks are in anyway obsolete. If any change is coming, it is more likely bug fixes in the new Al 15".

Poultry months, are they kind of like dog years?

I think it's based more on the time span that a fish can keep it's attention.
