this is pretty scary really. if this turns out to be a really wide spread problem, apple could be in for a big recall.

This is definitely something I'm going to try today.
I'm worried that this might void my warranty though. I personally don't believe Apple would frown upon and "punish" people who ended up fixing a problem that would end up costing Apple big bucks in the long run...but y'never know...

I'm sure this will be addressed by a Rev. B of the machine (in January), but in the meantime Apple's up a creek with no boat. Recalling the "fastest personal computers ever" will be, well, not good PR. But they really have no choice, if this problem is as widespread as it appears at first glance.

I wouldn't believe a recall would be needed - just a change in the temperature thresholds which i'm sure could be done in firmware/OS update. If the sensor is consistantly reading 20 degrees less than the actual temperature you just move the threshold down 20 degrees. The only problem i can see would be if the difference varied between room conditions.

Apple did a "pseudo-recall" of 52xx-series PowerMacs/Performas back in 95 or 96 where they did a systematic repair/replacement of some of the video hardware. No full product replacement, nor an official recall...but you DID get a 7 year warranty extension out of the deal. (Mine just expired last year :p )

I imagine Apple doing something similar with Gen1 G5 towers.
You take your tower to an Apple store, and a Genius sticks the thermometer somewhere else.
Done.

I’ve done a “touch test” on my dual-2GHz G5’s HD and it seems fairly cool to me; I don’t think I have this problem. (ThermographX reads 84°F on the HD bay, which I could certainly believe.) However, I’m in a rather unique situation: about two months ago my hard drive fan was running way too fast (http://forums.macnn.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=184485) and I wound up taking advantage of my on-site AppleCare. The AASP came out 3-4 times trying to fix it, during which visits he (among other things) recalibrated the hard drive fan (along with just about everything else he could think of). Maybe that’s is why mine runs so cool?
