I have tried numerous times to set preference so the documents or pdf' s I download are routed to a folder but they keep appearing on my desktop instead. Can someone advise how to stop them from going to desktop?
Thanks so much

Do you have Leopard or Tiger? In Leopard, there is a dedicated Downloads folder already that should route downloaded folders in that stack from the Desktop.

What browser are you using?

I too have most cluttered desktop. Everytime I download something form the Internet (whether I use Safari or Firefox) or open an attachment in an email, a copy is automatically sent to my desktop. Everytime I open an attachment in an email it continues to go to my desktop. . . eg., filename1.doc. . i open it again from the email, then the same file gets saved to my desktop but now as filename2.doc.

Any help to stop this would be great.

Thank you.

You can set the prefered folder to save files in, in Safari, Camino, Firefox and every other browser I know of.
See screenshots (It's in Dutch, but I think it is pretty clear)
If you did this already then I cannot help you either.

Safari:

you can set Mail to download attachments to any folder other than the desktop in its preferences. the same would go for other email clients as well.

How did you do that marking, I mean highlighting the download folder in that screenshot?
It looks very slick :)

tis very slick! i actually just worked it out after wondering how another member used the same affect.

open the image in Photoshop and add a layer
use the Gradient Tool with solid black selected in the Gradient Picker menu
make a gradient
cut out shapes using the Marquee Tool
youre done!

It's a lot easier if you use Cmd+Shift+4 and then spacebar to change it to window only mode for screenshots. Then open the screenshot in Preview and use the annotation tool (right click and choose customize in the toolbar if you don't already see it). Simple and quick.

Unfortunately I don't have Photoshop right now...but thanks anyway :)

Yes I know this, but I was refering to the gradient effect in richthomas' screenshot.
Thanks anyway :)

Thanks for the help. Now I can see my desktop picture without having to clean it up every week. :)
