How unfortunate for Steve, he certainly seemed ahead of his time. I guess a lot of innovative things he did turned out to be big flops, with the exception of the Finder of course.
It seemed like the Windows Active Desktop had a lot of potential but it was just the wrong time to implement something like that. The computer I had in '96 was a 75 MHz Pentium and it was barely able to run Windows 95 sufficiently, let alone Active Desktop (or was Active Desktop released in Windows 98? I don't remember). Regardless Active Desktop just slowed my computer down and I guess I got into the habit of switching it off with every iteration of Windows. Then I came to my sense and bought a Mac :-) A good idea, just never panned out like the Newton and the Lisa.
