Macbook pro screen fell off

So, my husband and I both have the exact same 17" mbp. We both use them regularly and treat them fairly rough. BUT, my screen is totally fine, whereas his has completely broken off the base. Exactly like another post I saw, the casing around the screen cracked about an inch up on both sides, the metal bent up and after awhile the whole screen unit just fell off.

So....we can't really afford the $500+ to send it in and get it fixed. Does anyone have a suggestion as to a "cheap" fix? Oh, btw, here's a pic in case you guys don't believe me.



(When I say "rough" I don't mean we throw our laptops around or anything, but we use them regualarly and have kids who pull on them some. We do not bend them past where they are supposed to go or anything like that.)

No cheap fix except glue maybe; how did this happen exactly?

Also you might want to flip the image since it's a mirror image right now.

I suppose you could hack it together with a metal hinge from Home Depot and glue it on, but it will be UGLY

Sounds like on your next lappy you should consider accidental damage coverage!

you could get two long pieces of metal that run the length of the computer (base and screen end to end), bend the brackets where the screen meets the base at say a 45degree angle and tape or glue the brackets to the backside of the system...kinda like a brace. obviously this would now be more of a stationary computer...

It cost 900 to get fixed though :(

It really doesn't take a lot to make this happen...
over time the hinge gets loose and it takes less pressure to move the screen foward and back over time
if someone uses the screen all the way back all the time, the hinge wont be supporting the sceen anymore, creating immense pressure about an inch up on each side of the screen, (keep in mind that the display weights a few pounds and the pressure is being focused on a tiny thin piece of aluminum) resulting in the crack and breaking.

keep in mind that the display weights a few pounds and the pressure is being focused on a tiny thin piece of aluminum breaking.

There is NO way the screen weighs a FEW pounds. A few ounces maybe.

I'm sorry, if your that rough with your laptop you need to get one of those panasonic tough books. There is now way that apple should have to cover that. IMO that is malicious abuse.

read your original post, you said, "We both use them regularly and treat them fairly rough." That is obviously not normal wear and tear, nor is that a common defect. I'm not saying that you did it on purpose, I'm saying you probably bent the hinge back farther then it's designed to go. Apple has every right to refuse repairing it under warranty. I'm not trying to troll here either. I actually feel bad for you.
