iPhone 3G - GPS with Google Maps with no signal?

A question about the GPS feature that isn't very obvious to me - if I travel and find that I am in the middle of nowhere that doesn't even get a cell signal (and therefore no 3G or edge), how will the Maps app work? The way I observe the first gen iPhone is that Maps accesses the net to build the map.
And further more, if I travel internationally and Maps depends on a data connection I would expect some hideous roaming fees.
Maybe this will all be irrelevant if an App from Tom Tom with maps saved on the iPhone itself is released. Thoughts?

I think you're right. I love my TomTom but would be very happy to sell it if the iPhone can replace it (with turn by turn voice instructions, and 3d maps - the vertical Google Map tracking shown at the Keynote is no use for driving).

As you say, Google Maps brings in map data on demand. So if you have no data signal to your phone it won't be able to show you where you are, though technically the GPS will still know where you are, it just won't have any way of showing you.

I'm sure I read that TomTom will be bringing a full SatNav package to the iPhone. This will be a true SatNav and have offline maps of your region, so you wouldn't need a data signal.

Google maps is very limited in this respect, but TomTom have confirmed that Navigator is coming to the iPhone.

let's say you don't have wifi. the maps will load using GPS? so ti acutally costs to use GPS.. ( since 3G costs..)

GPS isn't a data transmission network. Nothing loads over it.

There will be 3rd party GPS apps (eg. TomTom) that will have maps saved to the device itself, so you don't need service. Apple might do something like letting you save maps or a route to the phone too, but nothing they offer will be as good as TomTom or the other satnav companies that are working on software.

Here is the deal with GPS....GPS Is just a signal that cordinates through Sat position. You cell phone at the moment does it through Cell signals..

If you dont have a cell signal do Google so no around the way pinpoint.

With GPS this is different. You will have a strong signal depending on location (ie out in a field in BFE or lesser if in the basement of building)

However lets talk about Maps.....

Its uncertain if there will be a monthly service to use something through AT&T or how much TOMTOM is going to charge.
However you look at it your going to have to pay for the maps or a service for maps...You can just pull up Google maps and have turn by turn...This is will be a fee.

My friend with a Crackberry pays additional 10bucks a month.

When I used to have TOMTOM on my palm I paid around 29 bucks for entire maps of Texas but had to use an SD card for maps to load to. The maps take up alot of memory also-------------yet another delima. I would stongly suggest getting a 16G

When driving it is harder to see where you are at what the next turn is. And you have to concentrate to much...
