I make up a new ID and password for every purpose. I know the main ones by heart but I look up the less frequently used ones since I can't remember them all. One time, I didn't write down and then forgot the ID and password and secret phrase for a Yahoo mail account I had been using. It was tough getting it back again, but I finally figured it out.
I know many teachers who use their bank PIN number as their school computer password, and for everything else too, because "they can't remember more than one". I think that's carelessly dangerous.

I've got 3 passwords I generally use. I've got a short one that I use when it doesn't matter if someone breaks in (eg. forums, stupid compulsoty-registration websites, etc). I've got 2 long ones, one of them's more complex than the other so if the site says that one isn't strong enough then I use the other one. My most complex one is the admin password for the server at work, and is used exclusively for that purpose.

I have very few and they're mostly in Japanese. They exceptions are the websites which need a combination of letters and numbers.
Thank goodness for the keychain! :)

Lots of passwords. But Mac OS's Keychain makes things easy.

Lots. But thankfully most of them are in keychain. Just did a quick check and I have about 60 keychain entries with maybe a dozen not in keychain:(

I have a different password I use for every site I go to. I have my own method so that it's always different and I can remember it.

For membership sites that I dont really care about, its always the same password. But for important things, like server passwords, banking access passwords, email, paypal, online stores, etc I use a different password for each site.

I have a bad habit of using the same couple of passwords for most things. For my bank and credit cards however, I have different passwords. That reminds me...I really should change those one of these days...

Lots. I keep 'em all on file with SplashID, which I got when I still bothered to use a PDA. I don't use my PDA anymore, but SplashID is still in my dock.

Well aren't we going to falsely criticize the people that put 1 as their answer. What if that person only uses hotmail and doesn't go anywhere else that needs a password. It might be the best password ever made but we will say that it's not safe to use just one.
Just want to say that the poll doesn't take in consideration how many places you go that need passwords.
But probably those kind of people (with just a hotmail addres) wouldn't come voting here anyway, I guess.

I like the way you think man! :) The question is whether or not you're paranoid, it's whether you're paranoid enough! Telling people that you have one password is pretty bad considering they might use it here. Not that I'm implying any devious intent by Arn and the other MR gods.... :D
Like bousozoku I use a different language than English usually, and have a different password for each place. I have a special mnemonic system that I use to remember each one depending on where and what I log into. Which can help fit with system rules about using caps, numbers and non-dictionary words in the password.
Yeah I've got a lot of time on my hands... that and I friend of mine works on system security. His stories opened my eyes to how weakness can be exploited.

Every account be it online, banking, or computer passwords are different and I change them every 6 months. Thank god for my PDA. :D
And yes even the encrypted file that stores my passwords has a password. :p

I have a different password for everything. I'd say I easily have more than a dozen passwords I use on a semi regular basis. I'm pretty good about remembering them. Although, a few months ago when I went into work I had a complete brain lock and couldn't remember the alarm code until *after* it started going off. that was a bit embarrasing. :o

heh... passwords are stored encrypted in this DB, and the poll doesn't keep track of who answered what. ;)

Every single account that I use has a different password (PC/dailup/work/Amazon/mailservers/macrumors ... you name it) ... I do not use the same password twice.
These passwords are all based on a standard set of characters alternated with something I am able to remember based on the specific service the password is for.
And I change this system very slightly every so often.
I do not use the Keychain at all, because I do not like the single point of failure the one Keychain password would be for my security.

well you might want to change those now that you've told everyone.....
I have a few passwords with several variations for each one. I won't say what I base my passwords on but I definitely do not use anything "personal" such as birthdates or my fiancees name etc.

I'm aware there's risk using a master password (even when frequently changed) to access to those databases but the convenience is too useful now. I'd rather be intelligently careful than overly anxious about it. And certain private information is kept elsewhere anyway.

How do people do with 0 passwords?

11 people... what a joke!
I have about 3 passwords...
But most of them are like
'asdh;ahoeiah7089y72321™¶¥£¶™iiouuwja^!)_+'
So it might be hard to get to...

man my i old teacher used "55555" for every single online password. But wait, paypal requires 8 characters you say? ok his password was "55555555"
I know a kid whose password for yahoomail was
")(*&^%$#@!" The funny thing was that he tried to shield me and everyone else from seeing but it was so obvious
btw all passwords are sans quotes.

Yeah, those are definitely the passwords that most people use after they graduate from simply using there name or birth date or something else equally simple. The sad part is they feel they are being particularly clever.

Exactly what I meant. Telling the people how many passwords I am using and maybe even giving a hint which system I use to generate them is like giving a free ticket to smart hackers... I am a generous person, but not that generous to give access to vital accounts to strangers! ;)
BTW, I am coming to Canada for X-mas. So make sure you guys have loads of snow over there! :D  Ski-Dooing is on the schedule!
