iPod 4gen ipod dont work on car stereo........

i just bought a pioneer car stereo that i can hook up an ipod to it, only that my ipod is an old 4gen (2004) click wheel ipod and the stereo displays an N/A, i think i need to update the ipod, how do i do this?
