is it possible to burn a slideshow with the music backing from iPhoto onto VCD?, or to transfer it to iMovie for burning??

yep, pull open your iphoto help for details, you can also make a quicktime movie of photo's and music and burn it. ive done it for gifts.

Hmm you'd need some version of Toast to create a VCD.
