Decent software, but as with everything, you can put together these shell scripts and have them run at certain times quite easily.

Maybe worth the $7.00

There is no doubt that a competent Unix user can put together scripts that will run all Panther maintenance functions. There are also excellent GUI programs, such as Cocktail and Maintain that allow the user to do these and quite a few other tasks.

My point in the article was to point out to Mac users who are not comfortable with Unix or who do not want to have to deal with basic system maintenance a simple way to do so.

The best feature of Macaroni is that it never forgets to run the maintenance tasks, which can be a problem in Unix scripts or CronniX, depending on when your computer is turned on. That, and the fact it does it in the background, was worth $8 to me.

Maintenance is a function that most users should not have to think about. It's a function administrators and software designers should think about.
