I highly recommend everyone to sign this, even if you don't use MSN Messenger. The more support, the better. I keep getting all sorts of strange symbols etc coming up from my Windows-using friends, that the latest Windows versions can understand, bu they just look like rubbish on the Mac. I signed this petition months ago, and urge everyone else to do the same. Thanks :)

Get Proteus. Much better and supports Aim, ICQ, IRC, Yahoo and another I think all at the same time.

Agreed. Rather than relying on Microsoft to provide you with software updates, why not go with a better alternative?

OSX users complaining about not getting an update to a microsoft product? lol Why should they have to update it for another OS?

a. Online Petitions never work, or really have ANY effect for that matter.

b. MSN messenger, and the service suck, why support such a poor program and service?

I think more effective in the long run would be to create an online movement to shift the market from MSN to the Jabber protocol. Jabber's already growing fast (having recently overtaken ICQ), and is a totally open protocol. There are multiple clients on every platform, secure messaging is possible, other great features, etc.

It just takes diligence - keep spreading the word and telling your friends that Jabber's the next big thing, and you'll eventually liberate them from another MS power grab.

One example of Messenger relevance: I'm an MS-based web developer who just bought a 12" PB, which I also use at work for testing and for connecting to remote machines with MS RDC. MSN Messenger is the standard at our work place (and my lasst work place) for quick communication back and forth between developers and designers (our design dept is all mac). Therefore, having a properly working MSN Messenger for OSX is important and relevant. Not to mention all of my friends use it and I don't want to lose that communication channel.

Let me reitterate - Proteus. AIM, ICQ, IRC, MSN and Yahoo! messaging services. All built in, all working seamlessly, all at the same time. Nothing gets better than that.

The issue is people have been using the same app for years and they're not about to switch to a new network. Especially when most (the PC users and some of the Mac users) are not having any problems. It's not a simple situation of just changing your own usage; many people are involved. Hence, Messenger stays.

Edit: hang on. Are you saying that this Proteus app can tie into the msn messenger network? With preserved contact lists and mail notification?

Edit 2: Tried out Proteus. Maybe I'm missing something but it didn't seem to work. Set up my msn account but didn't see any of my contacts. Only saw some offline contacts. Set a bunch of preferences but no go.

uv23 -

I dont know how any of these networks work really. I dont use them much so I dont know if your settings are stored online with your account or not. Whenever I set up a new proteus (installed new OS) I would usually just copy my proteus prefs from the old install to the new area and everything would work, however, if that didnt work or if I couldnt find the correct prefs file, I would just re-set everything up.

Now. I have only used ICQ and AIM in the past and both have worked fine with Proteus. I dont know if file transfers work or not and Im sure not all of the goofy little emoticons are the same throughout although they have done a good job at trying to incorperate different emoticon sets from other apps.

The point of Proteus is that you can be connected to AOL, AIM, ICQ, IRC, and MSN, at the same time with ONE WINDOW. Its amazing what you dont miss. Imagine having one window, with a drawer like Mail's drawer that slides out to the left. Whoever you are talking to, they get a little "tab" in that drawer. So, you can be talking to 5 different people, on 5 different networks, and have ONE window. To switch to somebody new, all you do is click on thier name or whatever on the drawer and bam, your talking to them on that network. The other user never knows. Its awesome. But, if you need some of the advanced (is there such a thing for MSN?) features, then you might have to stick with MSN Messenger, but come on people, make your lives easier. No need to complcate them with pathetic releases from MS. I dont see Apple keeping Windows users at Quicktime 4. Thats just lame.

As for the preserved contact lists and mail notification, I have no clue. I am assuming that when somebody sends you a MSN message and your offline, then the MSN service sends you the email.. or is it the App that sends you the email, in which case thats lame anyway because you would have to leave your app open 24/7.

Everything is stored centrally with messenger. I'll try it a little more later today but my first impression of Proteus was a poor one.
