Except that they will only sell them at AT&T stores. I think you're out of luck with your gift card.

If you look at the apple website it states that they will be available at the apple store

From apple website:

iPhone 3G is coming soon to an Apple Retail Store near you. Meet with a Specialist, ask questions, and get to know iPhone 3G firsthand

Last year I braved the excruciating heat at the AT&T at Ballantyne. I will gladly opt for the A/C of Southpark this year (and leather seats). I'm thinking I'll get there around 1pm. We need to set up Food Court run for the MacRumors crowd. Food, Fun and 3G!!:D

I didn't see this post until I already posted another Charlotte meetup...sorry!

I waited in the extreme heat the last time as well.....lots of fun, but exhausting! I'll head to South Park too.

Does anyone know if the iphone will be on sale all day on the 11th, or if they'll do the 6pm thing again? I have to work the night before and I'll go in at 6:45pm that night:( Maybe I'll get some kind of 24hr bug and have to be out of work...hehehe....

I'm taking the entire day off, so I can get there whenever. Food runs sound amazing. What would be better is to have someone give us free food.

I'm taking the day off too....last time I was at the ATT store...but this time it will be really neat to have the full Apple Store launch experience.

I'm wondering too if they'll have the 6pm launch?

I am trying to decide if I really want to go to the Apple store. There is an AT&T store two minutes from my apartment, and gas is really expensive right now. I would have to wait outside though.

Hopefully all of you fabulous people will be able to convince me to make the trip to the mall...

MALL PROS:

Beautiful SouthPark
AC
Full Apple launch experience
Nearby bathrooms
Security
Food Court

There is one thing I'm wondering....by purchasing at an Apple Store, does that mean we have to go to an AT&T and purchase?? If that's the case, I may just do the AT&T store. I don't want to make two trips....one to apple store...one to AT&T store.

Thoughts?

Apple Stores will activate phones and accounts for AT&T. I'm willing to put money that they will know how to activate phones better than the AT&T staff.

I too have an AT&T just minutes from where I live. However, I rather spend the day with Apple enthusiasts and get the 'real' experience. Make that an hour drive for me with traffic. The benefit of going to SouthPark would also be that I've already had some interaction with you guys.

I remember watching launch videos on youtube and the apple stores were hands down more exciting. One guy from MacWorld went to an AT&T store and seemed miserable.

I'll be there!

Pretty sure I've decided to go with the Apple Store this go round. Last year, I was first in line at the (only?) AT&T store in Gastonia. Got my picture in the paper! :)

I've never done the whole Apple store launch event though, so I'm thinking this is as good a time as any.

Another Positive for SP. Last year AT&T stores actually ran out of stock in less than an hour. Our Apple store made it through the whole weekend!

Side note... Last year I took a portable DVD player with me to pass the time with movies. One guess what I'll be using this year;)

I was at AT&T Ballantyne at noon last year (#3 in line). I'm not sure when I'll be getting to SP. It depends on how big the hype gets this year as we get closer.

Just a note guys,
Not all AT&T stores will sell the iphone. Just the corporate owned stores. So if your store doesn't carry the 1gen, I would call to make sure they were going to carry the 3G. You can also link to the stores that carry the iphone through Apples website.

UPDATE:

I just spoke with an AT&T rep re: my upgrade status (I'm due for an upgrade as of tomorrow!!!! wooohoooo!!!) she said that all AT&T stores as well as Apple stores will be able to activate the phones. So there should be no worries about having to go two places.

Any ideas on how we'll all recognize each other...or are we going that far with this?

All -

Ok so lets monitor the situation as we get closer to launch. Maybe we can organize a meeting spot near the store. If we are to sit all day and wait, we should at least have some people to talk to while we are getting made fun of by the public...haha.

I'm not sure if Apple will do the whole 4pm close the store down thing, but we'll know soon enough.

Also, by getting there early and knowing each other....bathroom breaks and food runs can be organized without confusion or arguments from late comers. We had a few of those at first launch.

Thoughts?

sounds perfect. Hard to plan without knowing much details. If we could camp out within the mall, I'd probably do that for the sake of doing it. Someone needs to bring some extension cables for our computers. My MBP won't keep a charge that long. :)

I was at SP Mall yesterday and happened to go by the Apple store....boy was it CROWDED!!!! At 5pm on a Sunday afternoon. Makes me wonder about iphone launch day. I may have to postpone my purchase for a couple of days. Besides...if I picked it up on Friday before work...there's NO WAY I'd be able to get anything done that night.

AAAHHH...who am I kidding...I'm getting my iphone on July 11!:D

Ok everyone....we know the official time....8AM!

Now we need to think about what time to be there. A couple questions:

1. What time does the mall open?
2. What store is the closest to the Apple Store? (Belk?)
3. Should we pick a meeting spot either inside our outside?
4. What time do you plan on getting there?

We're almost there...hang in there sheep!

SP opens at 10am.

Apple Store is located in section B. If you go directly left of the Bathroom logo, you will be at the Apple Store. In fact, the Apple Store borders the long hallways to the bathroom, which more than likely be where they put the line.

http://www.simon.com/mall/images/floorplans/788SouthParkMall.gif

With AT&T opening at 8am, I will more than likely roll out of bed and go pick one up. I hate to do that seeing as Apple will receive more money by buying it from the Apple Store. With the time difference and gas being over $4, i'll more than likely opt for the closest option. Not unless one of you can convince me otherwise ;-)

Not planning on picking up the 3G right off the bat, but I'd be interested in hearing how good 3G coverage is south of Charlotte (Wesley Chapel, Waxhaw area).

Nice floor plan, thanks!

You bring up and interesting point. No way am I waiting two additional hours when I could just hit a nearby AT&T at 8am. I wonder if the mall has a deal with the Apple Store that will allow the customers to enter earlier? I would hope so.....as I want the full Apple Store experience...

What a snob I am...haha.:o

Only time will tell. I was in the Apple Store today and they still had no idea what time they would sell the phone. I bet they've been asked that a lot, I applaud them for answering with enthusiasm.

Im planning on being there myself. Breakfast does sound good. maybe i'll hit up a donut shop in the morning. Hopefully they sell it before 10am, I've got to work! :-D I know everyone like free stuff, so a website I write for is actually giving away free t-shirts and we're also running a contest for free iPhone 3G products worth over $300. We're just excited about the phone and we wanted to share that. Hopefully i"ll see you guys out there. Either in the mall or outside!

I'm not so sure about the waiting in line thing anymore. I think I may head over after work Thursday night (I'm off at 7am) and see how the line looks. If its not bad, and they open at 8...I'm staying. If it looks bad and they open at 10, I'll pop back by in the afternoon before work. From what I've been reading, that may be the way to go.

the line is horrendous; moved great for the first 50 customers... after that it took longer and longer. when i arrived ther were a 150 people in front of me... when i left there were 70 people in front me... 3 and a half hours later..... and my friend is still there. and said that only 5 people had been helped in the 45 minutes since i left. i am so angry at the apple store that i dont think i will ever step foot in their again.... after 3 and 1/2 hours of asking questions and listening to updates did they tell me that they could not help me... i have a bundle (tv/internet/home phone/ cell) with att so they could not process me and i would have to go to an att. store..... thanks for letting me know earlier so i could go to an att store before they sold out... NOT will be at least a week till i can get a iphone now becouse i am going out of town.... was hoping that the iphone would help me on my trip with directions....

I've been here 3 hours and am about half way there - they are serving about 30 people an hour and I'm looking at probably another 2 hours.

On top of that, AT&T's servers are down so people are being sent home with a bricked phone that has to be activated via iTunes - which looks like it's taking anywhere from an hour to three hours to get through...

should have waited until Sunday... but I'm committed now!

I went to an att store after I left south park. They were activating phones for non iphone customers really quickly. so the servers seem to work for them pretty well. the took payment on the iphone and are going to call when the next shipment arrives with one having been reserved for me...

Dude, let me tell you. Southpark was an absolute madhouse. I got there at 7am and was at the back of the line. Around 7:45 the line started moving at a good pace until around 8:45, just before the midwest launch. It started slowing down dramatically and then just before the pacific coast launch it screeched to a halt. We sat in the same spot for at least 2 hours. The only thing that was holding me back was to take a bathroom break and look at all the losers behind me with an estimated time of 6 hour wait. It finnally started moving a little at 12 and i finnally got in at like 12:50. I immediatly ran into problems. 1st it was that i had a buisness discount which was squared away pretty fast. Then we had to deal with family plan issues which took forever and then finally after that the imu or something wasnt matching up with the sim or something. Needless to say i finally got out of there at 3:15 just in time to get to work. I dont think it could of been done without one of the orange dudes who helped me out and even skipped his lunch break for me. Apple Customer Service + 1. Finnally walked out with a successfully activated working 16 GB Black iPhone 3g.. Yaahh
