Total N00b question, folks. Is there such a thing as an app that will take in an MP3 file of a piano solo and convert it to musical notation?

I've got a piece of music that I'd love to learn to play, however it's never been published as sheet music.

Cheers.

As of today, that's impossible unless the music is monophonic (i.e. no chords, just single notes playing at any time, like a horn). And even for monophonic music, the results are much less than great. Audio technology is just now almost at the point where it's able to analyze the notes that make up a chord, but no commercial product does it yet.

Thanks for the reply.

I've tried an app called "Transcribe!" which purports to do what I'm after, but it's a pretty hit-and-miss process.

Oh well, looks like I'll have to give up on this one.

While I agree with motulist, it looks like Melodyne will have a product available later this year that goes some way towards this -

Otherwise, you will need to transcribe the music yourself; when I need to do this I use Transcribe! which provides tools to make the process easier.

That's exactly what I was referring to when I said "Audio technology is just now almost at the point where it's able to analyze the notes that make up a chord, but no commercial product does it yet."

Didn't one of the sequencer have a function to convert audio to MIDI?

It's a small step from MIDI to notation, even in Logic, and Sibelius makes it even easier.

Just a though, I might have misunderstood a random comment.
