Help with deleting file.

I have a file that is stuck in ".Trashes" on a volume attached via firewire. When I try to empty the trash from desktop I get "can't delete file in use." I have even gone to terminal as root and tried to "rm -rf file" and then rm uses 98% of cpu under top and never does anything. If root can't delete, am I stuck? Intel iMac, osx 10.5.3
