View Full Version : People who touch your screens

Sometimes when I'm showing someone something on my laptop they point to something (and its usually quicker or unsuspected that I can't stop them) and they touch the screen. I typically just rub gently with the cleaning cloth that came with my ACD and its good as new.
However, my question comes in terms of pressure. I'm assuming as a consumer product that the screens can withstand some pretty good pressure. Not sustained of course, but I'm assuming you can accidentally press into it (mishap with depth perception, etc.) and it would be fine?
I haven't noticed any damage from people doing this, and its only happened a couple of times  but I'm beginning to think I'm going to be "that guy" and bluntly say "use the mouse, just don't touch the screen." Which you would think would be easy to say....but when it'll easily be heard by 6 other people, it can sometimes be a little awkward.

best rule of thumb...
make them stand 5 feet back :)
seriously, I dont think you should really worry about the screen. I think they do go through rigorous testing and it cant possibly be that flimsy.

Years ago, my dad was using my PowerBook while I was visiting. I told him to click on the "icon that looks like a compass" in order to get online (safari, of course). Well, I looked away for about ten seconds and when I turned back, I saw him poking the screen with a lot of force. It was tilting really far back and I was afraid that it would break. It did withstand that, but I was surprised that he couldn't figure out how to use the trackpad, especially since he had his own laptop at the time.

Just ask them not to do it again. Because you do not want to spend time cleaning fingerprints. It has always worked for me. Though some people need a lecture on the concept of hovering.

I also don't like it when some opens the lid of a laptop by one of the sides and not from the middle of the case.

I hate it when people touch my screen. 2 weeks ago, I had a third interview with a large lcd/tft manufacturer here in Taiwan . I had to give them a presentation and i used keynote with my brand new macbook pro. The M-F-ER, used his finger to draw a line on one of my graphs. I could kill him... Still no word on the job too.... If anyone should appreciate not touching screens it should be a lcd company.

In order to get a better viewing angle at the screen she grabbed the top of the screen and opened it as wide as possible... apparently that wasn't enough. Even though the screen wouldn't hinge open any further she kept trying to "slam" it back. I thought she was going break it off.
It happened so fast that I didn't realize what she was going to do until it was too late. Luckily it didn't break.

Want to hear the horror story that i did to my brand new mbp? Well, i was flying back from the US with my brand new mbp, 3 days old. I opened it up in the plane. I had a window seat and i didn't notice the sun was very strong and shining right onto my screen. I put the brightness onto full. After some time i turned the brightness down, to zero and i could still see everything on my screen. Than i noticed the sun. Stupid me, the first thing i did was touch the screen with my finger. A horrible smudge appeared. Wow, was i shocked. I immediately closed the blind for the window and closed my laptop. After a couple of minutes i opened it up, to find that the top of the screen looked badly damaged from me touching it, and very smudged. I nearly went crazy, because it was brand new. I was however very lucky, and at home i could get it off using monster screen cleaner!

I don't normally say anything, but I know people who do; I find it rude to yell at people who touch your screen; usually later when it isn't as tense, I wipe it; that usually gets the message across. I find yelling, striking, or wiping immediately make one seem rude. My 2 cents I guess.

Don't even get me started on this issue - I'm the only guy at my office with a Mac, and I am so protective of my MBP - but all the guys come in to my office to talk about the grahic/video work I'm doing, and they touch the screen!!! I've told them about this, and now they do it on purpose?
If I murdered them, I'd have a good case wouldn't I?

OK, here's a story you'll like.
I have a G4 cube with one of the 15" LCDs, like the first ones Apple ever sold, probably. They weigh a lot. Probably 2-3 kg. They also come with round speakers, about 10cm diameter. One day, I think I was trying to reach over the back of the screen to put something in or take something out of the USB ports of the screen, when I unfortunately tipped it too far forward. Now, I can't remember if the legs slipped backwards, or if It just slipped out of my fingers, but it fell forwards, and landed (with a very loud thud) on one of the speakers. Then, the computer (which was on at the time) shut down, whic naturally frieked me out (considerably). I believe it was probably just the mouse wire touching the power button or something, causing a force shutdown, but the terror it caused was quite extraordinary. Anyway, long story short, there is a slight impact mark on the screen now, that is only kind of visible in some special conditions and viewing angles, and is only as bad as the sag lines of the screen.
So, how much force can you put on an LCD screen before they screw up? Quite a lot. So unless someone is punching your screen, you have nothing to worry about.
Here's a desktop picture I made for screen-touch-nazis a year or so ago. Enjoy!

It's our fault for having pretty computers.
But seriously - even when I had one of those clunky PC laptops I hated people touching my screen.
Part of my job of having my MBP is letting volunteers use it on a Sunday morning - they leave metal pens on the palm rest areas, it makes me crazy! I'm like a parent leaving their child with someone they don't trust!

I work in teams frequently and i'm usually the one who brings a laptop to log all the brainstorming sessions (im usually a team leader) and naturally everyone in the team has this habit of poking my screen to point something out to the others "This one.." "oh you mean that one...yeah but lets add this one" and at the end of everything my screen looks marred and i have to break out the iKlear.
Usually i say "oi!...dont poke the screen...you risk damaging it" but they never listen. Now i just let it go...iKlear does a good job anyway

I hate it when people touch my MBP's screen. It's glossy and easily attracts fingerprints. Seriously, if you have something to point out, why not point to it, instead of poking the screen? I get tired of wiping it every time someone touches it.
Eric.
Jun 17, 2008, 11:32 PM
I'm with you on this, purely for the smudges. You aren't going to damage it even with a little bit of sustained pressure. That's actually a method to get rid of stuck pixels, which I've successfully done on a cousin's Gateway monitor. Of course that's not pressing very hard, enough that the distortion of the LCD is seen.

This is my major pet-peeve with my MacBook, the screen gets dirty enough from regular use, and the only thing that seems to be able to remove a finger smudge for me is the cloth that came with the computer that I left at home, which leaves me with an annoying smudge on the computer screen for the rest of the day. But when it happens I just ask them not to touch it in a somewhat pissed off mood (it always seems to work).
But in means of the OP's screen, I wouldn't worry about it. The screens at our school are absolutely abused by all the students and they don't seem to show any wear, and they are 3+ years old too. But then again, they are also Dells which may be made completely different than Apple's screens.

I used to have an old Dell laptop, first laptop I ever owned, I was in 5th grade. Anyway, I liked to touch my screen, a lot. Later in its life, I noticed there were large blue-tinted patches... so yes, at least on cheap old Dells, touching the screen will mess it up, but not for a while. After becoming technically inclined a few years later, I now place a sticky note on my displays to deter "touchers" from doing exactly what their name implies. This will go into strict enforcement once I get an ACD for my Mac Pro. (and no, my screen isn't that dim, it's the flash)

Great idea with the sticky note. So simple, yet it could be very effective. I will have to do that once I get a MacBook or MacBook pro for myself so when I leave it unwatched at home my family members don't go all touchy touchy on it.

In this instance, I give serious consideration to depriving said person of the offending digit.
I don't know why but I have a serious need for screens I use to be clean. When I bought my new phone a few months ago, the guy in the store got t out to install the SD card I bought with it when I didn't ask him to, and his fingers went all over the screen... I nearly hit him lol.

Touching my screen is perhaps the fastest way to annoy me. Next to that, would be the guests who use my Mac Pro to bear their weight as they are apparently to lazy to hold their weight with their own legs. I've got a slight mark in my Mac Pro from one who leaned on it (though it's probably only noticeable to me).
Hands off.
I hate cleaning LCD screens. Getting the screen perfectly clear and free of marks and smudges and such is a pain. I have to clean it, then buff it and buff it and buff it until I get all the lines out of the screen from cleaning it.
I miss glass screens where you just wiped it clean and then wiped the cleaner away and there were no streaks, smudges, or marks left at all.
Don't touch my LCD screen. I don't appreciate the 15 to 30 minutes to get it cleaned properly again.
Sure, many are probably less particular about a perfectly smudge free surface. But, if I clean it, it will be like new before I call it good. So, please don't touch my screen, I don't want to clean it.
Oh, for the normal daily dust, I will use a can of compressed air to blow it away. This way I can extend time between actually surface cleanings that require me to work at getting a nice even surface again. I only have to break out the liquid cleaners and special cloth's when someone touches (or worse spits) on the screen. I hate it when people spit when they talk.

I think i'm being realistic in saying i could coldheartedly smack someone touching my screen with a shovel on the back of the head!
But what REALLY sets me on fire is people dropping dirt on it! I don't even let others use my MBP in the first place, but few of my friends got to use it and one of them was dropping food crumbles while using it! I may be a bit anal about these, but i keep my MBP 100% clean, maybe that's why i don't tolerate stuff! I mean...when this happened i said in a very mild friendly tone : "Mate, please promise this was the last time you'd dropped any crumbles or anything on the MBP! " Deep down inside i was saying " Don't let me catch you being within 3ft or nearer to the MBP, or I'm gonna kill you and burn your body " or...something like this..:D
I just don't like to see my MBP look like sort of " used " I like it clean and mint!

I work in the I.T maintenance industry (mainly for pc's) but love using my macbook in the office. Sure enough other managers feel the need to squash their dirty greasy fingers on the screen.
when they start to lift their hands i know to yell at them to stop before they even *think* of touching the display but one chap couldnt resist in smearing his fingers all over the screen.
Needless to say after I had given the screen a good clean with iclear I duly visited his desk with a couple of grapes and proceeded to squash them all over his nice 19" sony LCD.

Whenever I present to a client, I have a little laser pointer that I carry in my bag that I break out and explain that if they want to talk about something on the screen, use the pointer. Plus I make sure they don't get within 2-3 feet of the computer. Might seem a little anal, but my last 3 notebook screens have never been touched by anyone but me. I just yell "don't touch the screen!" and grab their arm if I have to.
People use biros as pointers for God's sake and then poke your screen with them!
Most people I work with are getting the message and keeping half an inch off the screen when pointing at things.
I don't care what they think of me, it is unacceptable to risk damage to someone's really expensive screen.

If you want some real fun, try being a drummer at a party. Every drunk moron in the place thinks he's John Bonham and can play the drums with his hands. His, yes....never once had a problem with a woman! Telling people what they can do with themselves using an iron rod eventually became second nature, so keeping people away from the screen is a piece of cake. At least they're generally not wasted when standing around the computer!

My cousine has a round white mark from rubbing the screen of his MacBook Pro a little too hard. Unreversable and out of warranty so its a permenant fixture and the worse part of it is that it was his own finger print that he was rubbing away.
So I don't fall victim to the same issue I want to buy a pack of wipes (or something similar). Does anyone have an suggestions?

Yeah I'm with you. I would never have guessed so many people would get all crazed over this. It's actually a little disturbing to me when somebody is really obsessive over stuff like computer screens or the backs of shiny-case iPods or detailing their cars back to showroom state every weekend, etc.
To me computers and iPods and cars are all just tools, the same as a hammer or a screwdriver. I don't let carpentry tools get rusty but I don't worry if they get a little paint on them or some scratches. Battle scars just mean the thing works great and you're getting your money's worth out of it.
Well it takes all kinds to make the world stay in orbit... ;)

Drives me nuts! I once had friends over after partying one night and this drunk girl who had been eating greasy pizza proceeded to take my Mac out of my bedroom and open it up declaring "she doesn't get what the big deal issssss overrr thessssee apples". Double whammy insulting my favorite company and greasy paw marks all over my MBP.
I would have killed her.

I really hate it when people touch the screens on my machines  I won't forget one of my University professors who used his fingers and anything he was holding at the time to show us his Powerpoint slides. That was on a mainstream laptop however. I would have killed him if he had a Mac and did that lol!!

smudges are fine, you can gently clean them off. I'm more worried about the actual physical damage...if any...i should be worrying about.
I have a very curious two year old who frequently gives my Macbook screen a stab with his finger - and the screen is fine apart from the sticky finger prints that wipe off with the cloth Apple gave me.
I am quite vigorous with that cloth too - and never any damage.

Despite hating other people touching my screen, I do it myself occasionally to "point" out something. Then I swear at myself.
As with my Thinkpad, I do it as much as possible... ;)

I had a meeting with a new client today, showing them my 3D work for their project and in the first three minutes I had to yell: "DON'T TOUCH THE SCREEN" and made finger chopping motions, and after that they were fine and they commissioned more work. But probably not because I yelled at them for trying to mess up my screen.

Not about touching an LCD... But since we're on the topic of people mistreating our laptops...
I once had a teacher walk over in order to look at something on my MBP screen in class. I was sitting in a chair with my MBP on the table in front of me, she was standing.
One time in science my teacher got sort of mad because I had my MBP but not my book(We really don't do ANYTHING in that class, most of the time we will open our books and he will start to lecture a small group of students and that will last the whole hour and the person next to me had a book that we could share). Anyway he said put it up and before I could move forward to do so he slammed it shut and started to walk off with it:eek:. I hurried to get up and get it back. On topic I HATE when people touch my screen. Even when it is not MY computer.

I'm the same I always yell at people if they are going to touch my screen. Hands off!
You're from Arabia by any chance? I thought "hands off" was for stealing the Mac, not for touching the screen?

Lol, I can't bear it when people touch the screen - strangely enough one of my IT technicians does it all the time. Every time I go to their lab I tell them to clean the monitors. It's a pet hate of mine. But then so is dirty keyboards - I have a packet of wet wipes and my keyboard and mouse get cleaned every couple of days.
I'm going to be unbearable next week as I'm getting a new Eizo monitor - I've already bought a monitor cover out of my own pocket which I'll be putting over it every night to make sure our cleaners don't go near it. I think I'm a bit too anal about my kit :D
But you should see the state some of our gear comes back in - I run a small IT department and we have a laptop pool - the state that some of our gear comes back in. I was almost in tears last week as one of my lovely 12" screen HPs came back with a big ding in the case. I think I take it a bit to personally :o:D
