This is totally holding me back on buying the Mac Pro. I want that option so I don't have to swap out the card with the one that comes with the machine.

You think they may take out the 2600 and replace it with the 3870 or may just add it as an option with the 8800 as well.

What do you guys think?

Maybe next year when the Nehalem systems show up or six months after the 5000 series are out. Which ever is later.

Just to have no down time with my Mac I would probably buy it now and purchase the 3870 as a separate upgrade when it becomes available, that way I have a backup card should the 3870 decide to die on me.

Good thinking :)

I can't wait for the new ATI to start shipping tho. I hate the 2600

And what are the things that cause you to hate the 2600?

Poor OpenGL performance and not enough memory.
Try using 4 split screen in Vue with a simple terrain and nicely grown ecosystem.
Crash after crash. It's a crappy card for what I do and anybody that relies on OpenGL.

I am pretty sure the Radeon HD 3870 Mac edition will only be an aftermarket option.
