WOW, since folding.exteremoverclocking.com had been down I hadn't been following our stats, but today, the first day it's back up, we've folded 12,000 points by 3:00!!

Have we been slowly getting higher, or what??

Rower_CPU
Dec 6, 2003, 06:14 PM
All I can say is, damn that's a crazy spike from when they were down and then cashing in all the points at once. That'll skew our graph for a while, but it definitely looks like we're on a nice production increase. :)

Since the stats have came back up we've exceeded The Knights results every day. Maybe there is a chance we can retake them.

Then they would have to change there name to the Knights who say ichi ichi............

Would that be a good idea after the last time we passed them? It wasn't much more than a few weeks and they passed us again.

Look through the Distributed Computing area. You'll see that the Knights came in swinging.

They passed us, we passed them, then, they passed again.

By the way, we're at # 23 now!

It's basically a distributed project to hack security. They are generating keys to break the encryption. It may benefit everyone by leading to stronger security in the long run, but I think it's objective is dubious at best.

what is it? it's a contest like any other distributed computing project where you show off how many computers you can control

macs happen to kick some serious ass (http://n0cgi.distributed.net/faq/cache/264.html) at this project

you can win $1000 for yourself and your team

the objective of projects is kind of secondary to me...i love the stats and teamwork

To re-cap:
Folding -- Curing Diseases
Plus: Um... curing diseases, and um support MR.
Minus: Could be faster on the Mac Still...

RC5 -- Encryption Breaking
Plus: Macs destroy every other processor.
Money if you break the encrypyion... and for your team
Minus: Doesn't Suport MR... (personal view: It doesn't do much really... I mean it says 'we can break the encrpytion'... but it takes a frikken loonngg time)

Seti -- Alien Searching
Plus: Also am MR team. Os 9 support
Minus: Our team bites.

Also SETI has been accused of giving out the same unit many times... and the top teams (might) hack the stats.

Just to let you know, my brand new dual 1.8 will be all yours for folding! Still waiting on it to arrive (have been waiting for 3 weeks now...). Anyhow, already started with folding on my mac, B&W, but it got tooo slow, so, unfortunately had to stop. But I will be back!!

Edit: just downloaded the terminal app from mc68k and this works without slowing down my g3 400. So till that G5 gets here my B&W will be helping you guys out! :D

Depends on how fast it is. It only has to access when it finishes a work unit and when t does it only needs to make contact for a minute or two. So if you're machine can perform an average work unit in 10 hours then it would need to go online for a couple minutes every 10 hours or so.

The folding Team would love your support... Unfortunately the Processes to not play well and would be at about 40% for each process when your computer is completly idle.

I stopped SETI after reading much about it...

Folding for me seems much more worthwhile.

BTW, The Knights Shall Go DOWNN!!!

The amount of overhead we have over them is down slightly. This increases the time need to plow them over.

I've gotten a few too and they will play hell with your production. The p921_vpf912 is the worst one, it takes a G5.2.0 about 10 hours for a big 23 points. The 916, and 917 take 10 hours also but reward you with 30 points, still well below the normal 4 plus points per hour you normally get (per processor) on the G5.2.0.

The 920 is really pretty good with 36 points in about 7 hours. The 922 takes 7 hours for 31 points which is on par with other units.

So getting a few of the 921 can really drop your production. These units are also slow on the window machines which makes me wonder if they didn't just mess up with the point system on this one?

We will just have to ride it out I guess.

both my G5 CPU's are working on p683's @ 60 points each. The AMD is crunching on a p848 @ 32. Dont know what the work CPU is doing besides gasping for air. ;0D

wonder how fast the new G5's are going to be tomorrow? I'll buy another after the fall update and they hit 3 Ghz.

Jan 5, 2004, 09:11 PM
The 683 takes just under 15 hours on mine, which is about average at 4 pph, never had an 848, hopefully it's in the 4.5 minute per frame range?

The G5 is a great machine, mine gets about 1400 - 1500 per week, unless of course you get somee bummer p921 units?

Be glad you didn't start folding way back when. I used to get WUs which took the G3/400 10 hours and gave 0.6 points. Now, those seemed useless but it's all about helping people.

I know just what you mean. I actually did start folding way back when for the XlR8yourmac.com team. That was on my B/WG3 400. It was so frigging slow and I ended up quiting. Before I started getting these new small units that take a lot of time my Dual/1.4 was getting about 1100 points/week on it's own.

I think the reason our daily point gap is getting smaller and smaller between us and the Knights is because of these little work units. I can't think of any other reason unless there's just a bunch of machines that were not being used over the winter break and were just folding but are now busy doing other tasks.

Sure but before the new core, that took a lot longer. I had one that took 4 hours 10 minutes per percent on my G3/400 and 1 hour 23 minutes on the G4/800.

But what I wanna see is a Xgrid enabled folding client. I already asked the head honcho about it on the stanford forum and he said it had been discussed internally, whatever that means.

He needs to know that we mac users want a Xgrid enabled client as soon as the xgrid beta is made final. With xgrid and a few mac using universities and businesses the mac teams would rule.

Hi all, I am folding@home now, but have at work a 2.0 Pentium 4 running windoos 2000 (that's 2000 more errors!!). And it's sitting idle a lot. Have tried to run folding on it, but it didn't get through the firewall of my company, and the IT support doesn't want to help me with it or give me the port! Does anyone know a program that scans the open ports, so that I can install folding on it and that it gets data from stanford? I know, it's a bit illegal, but it's for team 3446! :D

Don't tell anyone, but "someone" here got around IT by finding out the address of the HTTP proxy server. We're set up for autoconfiguration, which does silly things like block web based email and who knows what else...
