Are there any known issues with iCal? Specifically, alerts. Am I suppose to actually have the application open in order to receive them?

I personally have not come across any bugs yet. Some people report that their events suddenly doubled (iCal copied every one of them).
You don't have to have it running in order to receive alerts.

Weird, I don't get any alarms at all.
