HD DVD on iMac

ok first, what is the power behind the imacs screen (High definition).
and is it possible to play an HD DVD on a superdrive?

Not sure what you mean by power. The resolution is 1680X1050 on the 20, 1920X1200 on the 24". The superdrive cannot read HD-DVDs.

1. HD DVD is dead..everything is going Blu-ray

ok but if i download an HD movie, will it be full HD? and i do know HD DVD's are dead i was just wondering, cause you can buy them for dirt cheap now.

external blu-ray player will work on the imac though, right?

and are the screens interlaced or progressive?

The new iMacs are more than powerful enough to be able to play HD video, but the SuperDrive can't read Blu-Ray or HD-DVD. You'll have to DL it from the internet or get an external drive (if one exists).

If you download an HD video it will playback as HD.

On my mid-2007 24" iMac (2.4GHz) I have no problems playing HD content.

However, for 1080p content OSXBMC (http://www.osxbmc.com) is currently the only player that does so flawlessly. Both VLC and the latest build of MPlayer still choke on some 1080p.

However, since OSXBMC has no problems with anything I throw at it clearly the system itself is not the problem but less than fully optimized code in the other media players.

720p plays smoothly on all media players for me.

Another vote for OSXBMC. Even on my mini, it plays most 1080p (FullHD) material without skipping.

just another thing - try to find another way of getting the HD DVD's than downloading - it is, afterall, illegal.

Just to add that at the moment there is no Blu-Ray or HD-DVD software available for OSX. You could play your movies under Windows, however, if you had an external Blu-Ray or HD-DVD drive. The XBOX360 HD-DVD drive apparently works.

actually i already tried plugging the Xbox HD DVD player up to my macbook, it would recognize the DVD but would not play it.

second, do any of you think that apple will come out with an external and/or internal blu-ray player? or software to let you use other external drives, or plug in your blu-ray dvd player. wait..... caould you use your imac as a monitor with a blu-ray player?

This (http://uneasysilence.com/archive/2006/11/8303/) is a bit dated and I don't have an XBOX 360 HD-DVD player myself but apparently it is possible to get it to work with a Mac.

Is there any reason why you are limiting yourself to Apple-branded external players? There are any number of external Blu-Ray reader/writer drives over here in Japan that work perfectly with Macs. If they weren't still so pricy (both the players AND the writeable media) I'd consider getting one myself.

I hear ya. By the way, I see that the article I linked you to for the XBOX HD-DVD player is for the PC. Someone said that the problem with getting the player to work in OS X is not hardware, but software. Apple DVD Player won't work but give OSXBMC (http://www.osxbmc.com) a try. I'd be curious to see if that has any better results.

hi, ive plugged my xbox hd dvd drive into my new imac and i have osxbmc but its not working at all. can anyone give a step by step guide as to how to get it to work as everyone claims it works flawlessly, id be much appreciated, would love to know where im going wrong lol

get the elgato TV hybrid

you can flawlessly play your xbox and nextgen systems through it, and as a bonus, watch live tv.

screw the HD part.
