Audio on the new iMacs

I dont own a mac and I never have, but I'm going to be purchasing my new PC soon which will be an iMac.

I do audio engineering for fun on the side and audio quality/quantity is always a concern for me.
I know the iMacs have optical outputs, but there is no information regarding their decoding, or 5.1/7.1/DTS etc... support.

Is there any site someone can point me to with specific information on the iMac's audio capabilities?
